This brown sugar old fashioned is a cozy, fall cocktail that is easy to make. Made with a homemade brown sugar, cinnamon and maple simple syrup. Mixed with bourbon whiskey and a twist of orange peel.

This cocktail is a spin on the classic old fashioned cocktail. For other old fashioned variations, try this pineapple old fashioned.

Pro Tips For Making This Recipe

  • While some recipes may call for soda water or water added to the sugar cubes, I skip it so as not to dilute the cocktail.
  • Avoid adding too many dashes of bitters to the glass as itll overpower the bourbon flavors.
  • Dont skip the sugar as the sweetness opens the bourbons aroma.
  • When cutting the orange peel, make sure there is as little pith as possible as itll taste bitter.
  • To help your drink stay cold longer, you can place your glasses in the freezer beforehand. If you didnt put the glasses in the freezer early enough, you can also fill the glasses with some water and place them in the freezer while preparing to make the drink for a quick chill.
  • Feel free to double or triple the recipe, just be sure to use a larger glass to mix your ingredients together.
  • Using a large ice cube is ideal as it melts slower and slows the dilution of the drink.
  • A Luxardo cherry makes a great garnish for an Old Fashioned. Place it on a toothpick on the glass, or add it to the drink and stir.

Happy new year !!! Weve officially started 2018! The beginning of a new year always starts off by looking back on what happened the year before. 2017 may have been a year of some serious ups and downs, but I did manage to do something pretty awesome in September. I even got a new stamp in my passport and jetted off to Japan!

All in all, it was a pretty big year. Now, its time to look forward, but not without a quick *cheers* first! Which is why, at the start of get fit January , Im sharing one of my favorite go to happy hour beverages, the Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail.

Turns out, this is the easiest, quickest drink to make ever and its just SO tasty. Im a whiskey person myself, particularly bourbon, so it should come as no surprise that the classic old fashioned is one of my go to drinks of choice. If I had known how easy it is to make, I could have definitely saved a trip to the local watering hole and made them at home! Way easier on the wallet too.

You literally only need 6 things, plus ice. Particularly a large singular ice cube if youre being traditional. We have a mold that forms orbs and I feel like Im in a speak easy in New York in the 1920s whenever we use it. Its fabulous ????.

Literally that easy. If you find it to be too potent , go ahead and add a another splash of club soda. Also, you can add a little more simple syrup, up to 1 ½ teaspoons. I wouldnt add a whole other sugar cube though, way too much sweet to be an old fashioned!

Whats The Best Way To Add An Orange To An Old Fashioned

This shouldnt be a huge issue, right? Just get a little orange in there. Wrong.

We found numerous restaurants and recipes calling for different ways to add the orange into the cocktail. This included:

  • Muddle in an orange slice
  • Squeeze an orange slice over the drink
  • Spritz an orange peel over the drink
  • Some combination of the above

An orange peel spritzed over the drink was the perfect balance. Although muddling in an orange slice is a fun infusion, it too easily overpowered the drink and ruined the overall flavor.

Spritzing an orange peel gave the right citrus zest but didnt ruin the otherwise deep flavors of the drink.

2oz Bourbon or Rye1/2oz Classic Old Fashioned mixer

Created by industry veteran Chris Patino of San Diegos Raised by Wolves, this ready-to-drink Old Fashioned should be in every cocktail lovers freezer, ready to be poured when guests stop by or at the end of a long day. Its made with a blend of rye whiskey, apple brandy, and cherry bark-vanilla bitters from Bittercube.

I think that rye whiskey makes for a more complex cocktail in terms of flavor, plus it’s typically not as sweet as bourbon. And I really like the spicy notes that it adds, especially in tandem with aged apple brandy, says Patino. Regarding the unorthodox addition of apple brandy, Patino says, I think the world needs to drink more brandy in general. But in the case of the Alley Cat OF, I was looking to do something different. I knew that rye whiskey would play a big part in the recipe, but it needed a boost. That’s when we came across some beautiful aged apple brandy produced by our good friends at Ventura Spirits. As soon as I tried it, I knew that it would work perfectly. The result is a balanced, bright, 39% ABV cocktail that only requires the addition of an orange twist.

Whats The Best Sugar In An Old Fashioned

The first question we tried to answer was what kind of sugar tastes best in an Old Fashioned. The second question was if simple syrup or a sugar cube is superior. Therefore, we tested the following sugars in our cocktail:

  • Turbinado Simple Syrup

Simple Syrup versus Sugar Cube:

It ended up being very difficult to get any of the sugar cubes to fully dissolve. We tried muddling them, adding them into some of the bourbon, and anything else we could think of. The best trick we had and one that can work in a pinch is to dissolve the sugar cube in hot water first. Its sort of like a quick-and-easy simple syrup. It isnt perfect, but it works if thats all you have or you dont want to make simple syrup.

Simple syrup is superior. It makes mixing and getting the appropriate amount of sweetness much easier.

In our testing, turbinado simple syrup made the best Old Fashioned. We tested turbinado sugar, organic cane sugar, and regular cane sugar simple syrup side by side in otherwise identical cocktails. Although any would work, the turbinado made a more complex Old Fashioned and ended up being the clear winner.

The organic cane sugar was a good alternative, but the regular cane sugar ended up lacking depth of flavor and would be our last choice.

How much simple syrup should I add to my Old Fashioned? We found the sweet spot to be 2 teaspoons . Many recipes call for a single teaspoon, or you might prefer a sweeter drink, but we found 2 teaspoons really balanced the cocktail perfectly.

Add the following to your large bowl:

  • 1 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 2 cups of granulated white sugar
  • * 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 5 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder.

The old-fashioned is definitely a strong drink. With little dilution and no significant mixer, it’s not much lighter than a straight pour of whiskey. The alcohol content of an old-fashioned made with an 80-proof whiskey falls around 32 percent ABV . Those old-timers would be happy to know that it still has that kick they were looking for.

Old Fashioned Sugar Pie Recipe Tips

Be patient when making the milk mixture for this pie. Heat it on medium to medium-low heat and stir constantly until it reaches a low boil. Otherwise, youll risk scorching the milk.

Likewise, be patient when baking the pie. It takes a long time to bake, especially when youre dying to taste it. This pie will still be slightly jiggly in the center when its done. But the edges will be set and the top will be lightly browned. And, hey, if you take it out of the oven before its set, serve over ice cream as a sauce and its still good. #becauseIknow

If youre not using simple syrup, it is very important to fully dissolve your sugar, as a failure to do so will result in a lump of unincorporated sugar at the bottom of your glass and a very strong drink.

Using a pair of sugar tongs, drop your sugar cube at the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass with your bitters.

Now, add a little bit of water and muddle with a cocktail muddler until your sugar is completely dissolved, which can take up to five minutes.

But the Old Fashioned is pretty perfect in its simplicity, so youre walking a thin line when you start to alter the recipe. Christopher thinks theres nothing wrong with a little experimentation, though, so long as the changes arent too drastic.
