How Do You Make A Spicy Bloody Mary Cocktail
Step one: Youll want to prepare the glass by running the juicy side of lime along the rim of the glass. This makes it possible to adhere the spicy cajun seasoning/salt mixture to the rim.
Step two: In a small pitcher, whisk together tomato juice, vodka, horseradish, Worcestershire, hot sauce and lime juice.
Step three: Add ice to the prepared glasses. Pour the cocktail over the top.
Step four: Garnish and serve.

Indianas Got The Juice
You might have to thank the Hoosier State for the commercial popularity of tomato juice and, thus, the easy availability of the Bloodys star ingredient. So the story goes, it was at the French Lick Springs hotel in French Lick, Indiana, where allegedly the first glass of tomato juice was served in 1917 by chef Louis Perrin.
Tomatoes were a prolific crop in both Indiana and neighboring Ohio, so when Perrin realized he didnt have enough oranges to juice for a summer morning breakfast banquet, he swapped the juice of the states popular red fruit instead, straining the seeds and tying the flavor together with a little salt and sugar. Just like thattomato juice! Of course, its likely that people have been consuming tomato juice for as long as there have been tomatoes, but Perrin is the guy who gets credit for popularizing it and inspiring a small cottage industry of tomato plants, to boot.

Chilling Allows The Flavors To Meld
This spicy Bloody Mary tastes great right away. But it tastes even better after chilling for 1 hour, or even overnight. In fact, you can make it up to 1 week in advance. Why? Chilling helps to meld all the ingredients together into a cohesive flavor.
Since usually this drink is made for entertaining, it shouldnt be too hard to whip up in advance and chill until serving. But you can also drink it right away: it still tastes fantastic!

It Has Seven Staple Ingredients
Variations and creativity notwithstanding, there are seven ingredients to a traditional Bloody Mary, according to Bartels. The seven ingredients that I associate with Petiot and the King Cole Bar would be vodka, Worcestershire sauce, tomato juice, black pepper, celery salt, Tabasco and lemon juice. Swap the vodka for tequila, and you have a Bloody Maria. Prefer gin? Just call it a Red Snapper, please. The addition of clam juice gives you Canadas Bloody Caesar, and beef broth makes it a Bloody Bull. But if you want the original, stick to the first lucky seven.

What Is The Best Tomato Juice For A Bloody Mary
For Better Bloody Marys, Use Vegetable Juice Not Tomato Juice. Recipes for Bloody Marys abound, each with a unique twist on the tomato base or the spices. The tomato base is sometimes made with fresh tomatoes, canned tomatoes, or even Clamato, but straight-up tomato juice is the most widely used base.
Add Fresh Cucumber Garlic And Black Pepper
Fresh peeled and seeded cucumber completely disappears into the tomato juice mixture, but adds a lot of fresh flavor.
Fresh garlic and freshly ground black pepper are key flavors as well. Youll add those after youve blended the mixture smooth. Then you can blend the mixture for just a few seconds to retain their texture. Or, you can blend it completely smooth. Up to you!

A Bloody Mary Deserves A Flavorful Salted Rim
A blood mary, properly loaded with all good things pickled, spiced, crunchy, and irresistibly munchy, is more than just a drink to me. Its a work of art. And because I dont indulge in one very often, this mini-meal-in-a-glass is also a special occasion that deserves a little extra attention!
There are a zillion ways to personalize a bloody mary, from the tomato-based drink mix to the cornucopia of garnishes. I simply MUST include a couple spears of Pickled Peppered Asparagus and a skewer of puts this drink over the top!
But today Im here to talk about the salted rim. Because I believe that every blood mary deserves that extra layer of flavor and pretty texture. Also, Im just a sucker for detailswhich is both a blessing and a curse.

Ingredient Notes And Substitutions
Note: This is only a partial list of ingredients. For the full ingredient list, see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
V8 juice Because the glass is rimmed in salt and theres sodium from the other ingredients, you may want to use the low sodium variety.
Vodka Mix up different blends by using gin, tequila, or even light beer instead.
Horseradish This adds heat to the drink, but can easily be left out if you dont like it or dont have any on hand.
Olive juice Any kind will work, but the juice from green or pimento-stuffed olives will blend best with the other flavors.
Hot sauce Use your favorite blend of hot sauce, such as Tabasco, Cholula, or Tapatio. Even Sriracha sauce would be a fantastic choice.
Rim salt Create your own flavored salt using other spices. Good choices would be cumin, onion powder, cayenne pepper, or celery salt.
Making Homemade Bloody Mary Mix:
Every great Bloody Mary starts with a perfect Bloody Mary Mix!
I bought a store made mix for years so when I made it at home the first time I was surprised how easy and economical it was to put together. Now, I always make my own and you can too!
Bloody Marys always remind me of girls weekends, lazy beach days and fun brunches. The trend right now is to add lots of fun garnishes to your bloody. This includes everything from bacon, shrimp, pickled beans and baby cheeseburgers!
Its so much fun to build a Bloody Mary Bar for parties because the choices are endless and everyone can add their favorite garnish.
Bloody Marys with celery and bacon
After experimenting with many different versions I came up with an easy mix. You can use this as a base and add or subtract as much spice as you would like.

Dont Overdo Your Garnish
Take it easy on over-the-top Bloody Mary garnishes. Miniature cheeseburgers or fried oysters and the like may be eye-catching, but they do nothing to complement the drink itself in most cases, they simply detract from whats in the glass.
Pickles or olives work, and a celery stick is always a perfect pairing, Shock says. Be confident enough to keep it simple. Sunday mornings are tough enough.
More Recipes For The Perfect Brunch:
- Pour into two high ball glasses then add more ice.
- Top with the garnishes and serve immediately.
- To make crispy bacon garnish, heat the oven to 300 degrees C, line a baking tray with parchment paper. Place the bacon on the paper and place the tray on the middle shelf. Bake for 10 minutes then turn the bacon and bake for another 5 minutes. The bacon is done when it’s crispy. Remove bacon from the tray then place on kitchen paper to drain off any fat, leave to cool.
- To make the salt rim, pour the celery salt, chilli flakes and sea salt onto a small plate.Rub the juicy side of a lemon wedge along the lip of the glasses.Roll the outer edge of the glass in celery salt until fully coated.

The Origin Of The Bloody Mary
The original is believed to have been invented in the 1921 by Fernand Petiot, an American tending bar in Paris, although the entertainer George Jessel made a credible claim to the recipe. Or perhaps the origin was a cocktail called Red Snapper at the King Cole Bar and Lounge of the St. Regis Hotel, New York in 1934. When Tabasco sauce was added the name Bloody Mary was applied.
The origin of the name is clouded. Some believe the inpiration for the cocktail was the Hollywood star Mary Pickford who earlier had a cocktail consisting of rum, grenadine and maraschino named after her. It was most likely named after Englands Queen Mary I, nicknamed Bloody Mary for her violence against Protestants in the 1500s. The drink may also have gotten its name from a folkloric witch. According to legend, she will appear if you call her name three times. Ill tell you this, if you yell Bloody Mary three times at my favorite bartender, shell toss you out on your keister.
In the 1960s it became popular to serve the cocktail with a celery stick when a guest at The Pump Room at the Ambassador East Hotel in Chicago, requested something with which to stir his drink. Someone gave him a celery stick and a legend was born. Today garnishes of every kind can be seen with the Bloody Mary, even shrimp, olives, carrots, ribs, and even a sardine for the very courageous.
What Do You Garnish A Bloody Mary With
This is where creativity really takes ahold. You can garnish a bloody mary with just about anything. Just look at how crazy some bars get with their garnishes.
Traditionally, a bloody Mary will be garnished with a celery stalk and olives. That is just fine. However, for this spicy bloody Mary, I wanted to up the spice factor a bit.
For this Bloody Mary, Jalapeno and Garlic Stuffed Olives and spicy salami make the perfect garnish.
Pepperoncini would be great too!
If you want to spice up this cocktail even more, I recommend using Absolute Peppar Vodka instead of regular vodka. You could also substitute hot and spicy tomato juice for the regular tomato juice or add a touch more hot sauce. Maybe some Habanero Hot Sauce?
Whatever you decide, I just know youll be moving Bloody Marys from your Brunch Only list to your regular old Happy Hour list.

Big Batch Bloody Mary Mix
Whether you’re serving guests or just want a pitcher waiting in the fridge for a quick drink, it’s easy to increase the recipe. The make-ahead bloody mary works out best if you hold the vodka because it gives you the option of pouring another liquor or enjoying a nonalcoholic drink.
- For a bloody mary pitcher that will serve eight drinks, combine four cups of tomato juice, 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon each of Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, celery salt, and black pepper, and about two teaspoons of horseradish in a pitcher. Stir well, taste and adjust the seasonings, and refrigerate for up to one week.
- When ready to serve, pour 1 1/2 ounces of vodka in an ice-filled glass and add the Bloody Mary mix.
- To spike the entire pitcher, add two cups of vodka.
