Making Homemade Bloody Mary Mix:

Every great Bloody Mary starts with a perfect Bloody Mary Mix!

I bought a store made mix for years so when I made it at home the first time I was surprised how easy and economical it was to put together. Now, I always make my own and you can too!

Bloody Marys always remind me of girls weekends, lazy beach days and fun brunches. The trend right now is to add lots of fun garnishes to your bloody. This includes everything from bacon, shrimp, pickled beans and baby cheeseburgers!

Its so much fun to build a Bloody Mary Bar for parties because the choices are endless and everyone can add their favorite garnish.

Bloody Marys with celery and bacon

After experimenting with many different versions I came up with an easy mix. You can use this as a base and add or subtract as much spice as you would like.

Salt Rim For A Bloody Mary

After the spices, the second most important part of a good spicy Bloody Mary is the salt rim. You dont want to use just any old salt for the rim, because itll be too overpowering.

You can purchase a rim salt, like this Bloody Mary Salt on Amazon. Its made with coarse flake salt, paprika, ground celery seed, cayenne pepper, chili powder, oregano, cumin seeds, garlic powder, cayenne powder, dehydrated garlic, dehydrated onion, black pepper, dried lemon peel, dried orange peel, citric acid, natural flavor, parsley, beet root powder.

I really like this bacon rim salt. We use it for our wildly popular Oaxacan Mezcal cocktail.

This Bloody Mary Salt can also be used to make a batch of roasted nuts or vegetables, or rub it onto a chicken before you slide it into the oven, or toss it with popcorn. Its savory and a little spicy .

Bloody mary mix is easy to make at home. You will find that this mix is far more complex than the standard recipe. The combination of sauces and spices makes a great base that can be stored in the refrigerator. When you’re ready for a bloody mary, you’ll simply add it to tomato juice and pour the spirit of your choice.

While vodka is the most common liquor for a bloody mary, it’s not the only option. Gin was the original base for the savory drink, and blended whiskey is excellent as well. Of course, you can always skip the booze and make it a virgin bloody mary, too.

The recipe makes right around 2 cups of bloody mary mix. For each drink, add about one tablespoon for every four or five ounces of tomato juice , adjusting it to your taste.

What Hot Sauce Goes In A Bloody Mary

The fun part about making your own bloody mary is you get to choose what you like and what you dont. I prefer Tapatio in my spicy bloody marys. I like the balance of vinegar with rich flavor and that hint of smokiness. Some people love Sriracha for the extra hot kick and complexity, while others want to keep it traditional with Tabasco.

Use your favorite hot sauce and you wont be disappointed!

What Alcohol Is The Best In Bloody Marys

Traditionally, bloody marys are made with vodka. For these spicy bloodies, we chose to use a combo of infused vodkas to give these some extra flavor, and we will not go back! We used Absolut Peppar and Hanson Habanero infused vodkas. But feel free to play around with different vodkas to find your favorite. We have also switched out thee vodka altogether with gin to make this Bloody Mary into a Red Snapper. Let us know if you find a combo you love!

Our award winning mixers require no doctoring up to render unforgettable and unique flavors that enthusiasts have come to admire. Each blend has just the right amount of heat that compliments their profiles brilliantly. We understand that preferences vary and the desire to spice up the cocktail by adding hot sauce is the norm. Our products were developed to release the flavors in the back of the palate as opposed to the front, adding hot sauce will change this completely. We implore our customers to use a type of pepper such as cayenne. This will not sacrifice the integrity and flavor of the drink while still providing the desired heat.

The Origin Of The Bloody Mary

The original is believed to have been invented in the 1921 by Fernand Petiot, an American tending bar in Paris, although the entertainer George Jessel made a credible claim to the recipe. Or perhaps the origin was a cocktail called Red Snapper at the King Cole Bar and Lounge of the St. Regis Hotel, New York in 1934. When Tabasco sauce was added the name Bloody Mary was applied.

The origin of the name is clouded. Some believe the inpiration for the cocktail was the Hollywood star Mary Pickford who earlier had a cocktail consisting of rum, grenadine and maraschino named after her. It was most likely named after Englands Queen Mary I, nicknamed Bloody Mary for her violence against Protestants in the 1500s. The drink may also have gotten its name from a folkloric witch. According to legend, she will appear if you call her name three times. Ill tell you this, if you yell Bloody Mary three times at my favorite bartender, shell toss you out on your keister.

In the 1960s it became popular to serve the cocktail with a celery stick when a guest at The Pump Room at the Ambassador East Hotel in Chicago, requested something with which to stir his drink. Someone gave him a celery stick and a legend was born. Today garnishes of every kind can be seen with the Bloody Mary, even shrimp, olives, carrots, ribs, and even a sardine for the very courageous.

A Bloody Mary Deserves A Flavorful Salted Rim

A blood mary, properly loaded with all good things pickled, spiced, crunchy, and irresistibly munchy, is more than just a drink to me. Its a work of art. And because I dont indulge in one very often, this mini-meal-in-a-glass is also a special occasion that deserves a little extra attention!

There are a zillion ways to personalize a bloody mary, from the tomato-based drink mix to the cornucopia of garnishes. I simply MUST include a couple spears of Pickled Peppered Asparagus and a skewer of puts this drink over the top!

But today Im here to talk about the salted rim. Because I believe that every blood mary deserves that extra layer of flavor and pretty texture. Also, Im just a sucker for detailswhich is both a blessing and a curse.

Im pretty sure, though, that once youve enjoyed this famous brunch cocktail with my Bloody Mary Rim Salt recipe, youll agree that little details can definitely be worthy of pursuing.

How To Make This Homemade Bloody Mary Mix Recipe

Demitris All Natural Classic Recipe Bloody Mary Seasoning ...

I hope, if anything, this Bloody Mary recipe is so easy and delicious it encourages you to skip the store bought stuff and make your own Bloody Mary mix at home!

To make the mix, its basically a two step process: youll add all of your ingredients to a large pitcher, carafe or mason jar. Make sure whatever container youre using it has a lid or it can be covered to store in the fridge .

After adding the main ingredients, taste and adjust the seasonings to your preference. For example, you may want to add additional hot sauce, Old Bay seasoning, lemon juice, garlic, celery seed, salt or pepper depending on how you prefer your brunch beverage. A few shakes here and a few shakes there should do the trick. Make sure you add additional seasonings and spices a little at a time as taste as you go until the mix is perfect.

Stick the pitcher in the refrigerator overnight, if possible . If you dont have time to chill overnight, at least give it a couple of hours.

Before serving, make the salt rim. On a shallow, small plate, combine Old Bay seasoning and salt. Prior to filling a high glass with ice, make a notch in a quarter of a lemon wedge or lime wedge. Rub the lemon or lime along the top rim of a highball glass until it is wet, and then tip the glass into the seasoned salt mixture and spin until the glass rim is coated.

Homemade Bloody Mary Mix: Hot And Spicy

This homemade bloody mary mix is hot, spicy, and infinitely better than anything you can buy at the store. Start with whole peeled tomatoes and skip the salty mix.

Theres nothing quite like a really good, really spicy bloody mary. I love the rich tomato flavor, the slow heat of horseradish, and of course, the hot sauce. Its an umami bomb I cant get enough of. It took me a while to admit this, but I even love the bloody mary mix all on its own. And when you bring the garnishes into the picture, its basically a meal.

Unfortunately, a good balance of tomato flavor, heat, citrus and salt is hard to come by. Thats why I decided to make my own homemade bloody mary mix, starting from the very beginning the tomatoes. Good quality canned tomatoes will give you a sweet, flavorful base to work with year around.

From there, I go big with the horseradish and heavy with the hot sauce . Finally, my secret ingredient: beef broth. It blends into the background, but it pulls the flavors together and gives your homemade bloody mary mix a ton of extra depth.

Control the flavor from the outset and skip the salty mix. Make a homemade bloody mary your people will love!

To get the flavored salt to adhere to the glass, simply run the cut edge of a fresh lemon wedge around the rim. Then turn the glass over and dip the rim into a small plate that contains a good layer of rim salt.

Tip for you! Take care to press the glass rim straight down into the salt, and then pull it straight up out of the salt. Do not twist the glass while its in the salt, as this often causes the rim salt granules to release from the rim.

    Smoked Bloody Mary Recipe

Serve with: your favorite brunch menu items.

    • 1 1/2ounces80 proof unflavored vodka
    • 1tablespoonfresh lime juice
    • 1teaspoondill pickle juice
    • 1/8teaspoonbottled horseradish in vinegar
    • 1or 2 squirts of Tabasco Chipotle sauce
    • 1slice of cooked bacon
    • 1lime wedge for garnishing
    • 5cubes smoked ice

About the tomato juice. If you wish, slice 3 large juicy ripe tomatoes in half and put them in your smoker at 225°F, sliced side up, and smoke for an hour. Squeeze the smoked tomatoes into a strainer and push on the pulp with a ladle so most of it goes through. Taste it. If it is too thin, cook it down a bit by boiling it in a non-reactive metal pan. You can do this a few days in advance. You’ll need 4 ounces to make one drink.About the lime. The original Bloody Mary probably had a lemon not a lime, but I prefer lime. You can use lemon if you wish. Or both.About the vodka. If you wish, substitute tequila, white rum, aquavit, gin, grappa, lime vodka, herbed vodka, vodka infused with sun-dried tomatoes, or even a pilsner beer.About the Worcestershire. I prefer Worcestershire, but for fun, you can try beef bouillon or steak sauce.Optional mix-ins. Try crushed fresh garlic or garlic powder, grated fresh onion or onion powder, capers. Go easy.About the Tabasco. You can make your own, or use any of your faves, like Sriracha.About the bacon. Feel free to substitute a BBQ Rib, a Slim Jim, beef jerky, or a celery stick.
