    My mom has been making Milk Chocolate Bar Cake ever since it first graced the pages of Southern Living in the April 2000 issue. From potlucks to birthdays to Christmas Eve dinner, this cake has seen it all. My sister and I made one for my mom’s birthday this year, and my dad, who isn’t really much of a chocolate fan, requested the same cake for his birthday a few weeks later. Anytime this dessert is on the cake plate, there’s always a discussion about who gets the last slice. Never a slice left standing.

    To make this easy cake you just bake as directed on the box making sure that you make three layers. Baking the cake in three layers instead of two gives each slice an impressive presentation and offers more surface area for icing. If you can’t find Swiss Cake Mix, you can always use Devil’s Food Cake Mix instead. The recipe calls for chocolate bars with almonds, such as Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars with Almond, but if you prefer you can opt for plain chocolate bars for a nut-free cake.

    1 box cake mix, german chocolate
    1 – 3 oz instant vanilla pudding
    3 large eggs
    1/3 – 1/2 c oil depending on cake mix brand
    1 1/4 c water depending on cake mix brand
    8 oz cream cheese softened
    1 scant cup sugar
    12 oz frozen whipped topping, thawed
    1 scant cup confectioners sugar
    1 c chopped pecans or nuts of choice
    1 giant hershey bar not the regular


    • 1. Combine cake mix, vanilla pudding, eggs, oil and water according to cake mix package instructions. Beat until smooth and pour into 2-8 inch pans greased and floured with cooking spray. Bake at 350 for 35 minutes. Remove and cool layers.
    • 2. With a stand mixer important unless you have a really strong arm beat cream cheese and sugar for 20 minutes. Add in the confectioners sugar and beat just until smooth. Fold in whipped topping, chopped pecans and grated hershey bar.
    • 3. Frost cooled cake and enjoy. So good. Even better the next day. Scant means just slightly short of a cup.

    Preheat oven to 325 degrees F . Grease and flour 3 pans. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, milk, eggs, oil and instant vanilla pudding mix. Beat on low speed until blended. Scrape bowl, and beat 4 minutes on medium speed.

    Cakes Decorated With Candy Bars

    One of my favorite ways to decorate a cake made in a bundt of tube pan is with pieces of candy bar. I put a glaze, icing or ganache on the cake and then place pieces of cut up candy on top around the center whole.

    As well as doing it with this Milky Way Candy Bar Cake, I did this with my peanut butter pound cake. I applied a chocolate ganache to the cake and then topped the cake with pieces of Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. It turned out amazing. You can check out the post here.

    A Lady in my church gave me this Hershey Candy Bar Cake recipe. Every time I make it there is none left over.

    1 box duncan hines swiss chocolate cake mix
    1 small box instant vanilla pudding mix
    2 c buttermilk
    1 c vegetable oil
    3 large eggs
    ICING :
    1- -8 oz cream cheese
    1 c sugar
    1 c finely chopped peacans


    • 2. Mix all ingredients together. and bake as instructed.
    • 3. ICING:
    • 4. Grate 5 Hershey candy bars in small bowl. Grate or shave the other bar and set aside for garnishing. in the frosting.
    • 5. Beat powdered sugar, sugar and cream cheese. FOLD IN GRATED CANDY BARS AND CHOPPED NUTS. FOLD IN 12 ounces COOL WHIP.
    • 6. Put 1 layer on the plate you are going to serve it on. You can be generous with the frosting between each layer, Then lay another layer on top of the first put another of frosting. Put the last layer on top . Proceed on to frost the top and sides. Sprinkle the 6th. candy bar on top. Refrigerate.

    Why This Cake Is The Best

    As much as I love it, I rarely order chocolate cake in restaurants. Even the best restaurants usually serve a slightly dry chocolate cake and I cannot stand that.

    So I adapted the Hershey’s Chocolate Cake recipe to include vegetable oil and butter as well as an extra egg yolk to ensure the cake is moist and tender and not at all dry.

    What I love about this cake is that it’s so easy. And although throwing everything in one bowl to mix up a cake seems a little counter-intuitive to the precise nature of cake-making, it works so well for this cake that I don’t know why we don’t use this method for every cake!

    History Of The Milky Way Candy Bar

    After making this cake and researching this post, I wondered about the history of this great American candy bar.

    According to this post by Snack History, the Milky Way Bar was invented by Franklin Clarence Mars in 1923. It was first sold in 1924 and had $800,000 of sales that year. By 1926 there were two versions of the bar, the chocolate nougat with milk chocolate coating, and vanilla nougat with a dark chocolate coating. Both versions are still sold today.

    No-Bake Fudgy Toffee Bars | Southern Living

    Heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease and flour 10-inch tube pan or 12-cup fluted tube pan. In large mixer bowl, beat butter until creamy gradually add granulated sugar, beating on medium speed of electric mixer until well blended. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add chocolate beat until blended.

    Microwave on high for 45 seconds to melt candy bars. Let cool. Add baking soda to buttermilk and set aside. Cream Butter, sugar and cocoa in mixing bowl. Add eggs, one at a time making sure to blend well after each addition. Add flour and buttermilk, alternating, starting and ending with flour.

    Mix first 5 ingredients and bake at 350 in 4 round cake pans. Bake according to cake mix directions. Mix frosting ingredients together and add 4 grated Hershey bars with almonds and ½ cup pecans. Ice between layers, top and sides.

    How To Make Hershey’s Chocolate Cake

    Start by stirring together all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and then adding the wet: eggs, milk, oil, butter, and vanilla.

    Then you stir in boiling water that has been poured over used coffee grinds. This does not make the cake taste like coffee, I promise. What it does is similar to what salt does to soups or any food.
