    Putting It All Together

You may be wondering where your own personal views on dairy fit into all of this.

As I mentioned above some people take their dairy to extremes and will only drink raw and organic. Some people wont touch dairy for various reasons and choose the non-dairy milk they like best. Flavor plays a big part in that decision.

I think its fair to say that unless you take an extreme approach to your eating plan or have certain food allergies or sensitivities, you will most likely fall into the middle somewhere. It all comes down to finding a balance that feels right to you.

While I love milk, I can no longer have it. So I opt for the almond milk. While its not 100% clean, its the cleanest option for me. Your best option may be entirely different, but the point is, you need to make a choice that fits your life.

    Best Dairy Free Substitutions:

It is easy to make dairy free substitutions. Here are some that we commonly make:

Milk: You can sub dairy milk with almond milk. Coconut milk also works as a substitute, and is often higher in fat so its good for replacing half and half or whole milk. Our favorite brand of non-dairy milk is Elmhurst because it has the least amount of ingredients:

Cheese: Most dairy free cheese arent as good as the real thing. We have found Miyokos brand of products the best substitute.

Butter: Butter can be substituted with olive oil or avocado oil. Most dairy free butters are just made from fake ingredients, so we find its best to skip them. Some people who are dairy free can tolerate ghee because it is clarified butter.

Yogurt: There are many dairy free yogurt brands out there. Our favorite is Siggis. Check the ingredients because many dairy free yogurts have alot of added sugars, which dont make them the healthiest snack option.

Ice Cream: There are so many amazing dairy free ice creams out there! Nadamoo and Oatly have the most regular ice cream taste in my opinion, but you cant go wrong with Good Pops, Cado Ice cream, or So Delicious Ice cream either!

Please note that most non-dairy milks I have found are not clean. While a lot of the ingredients are vitamins for fortification, there are still some ingredients in most that are not clean. You may have to look at many packages before you find one that is appropriate for you. So far, the only non-dairy milk I have found that is JUST milk with NOTHING added is coconut milk in a can . This doesnt mean they dont exist, it just means I havent found them yet. If you know of a good brand, please share in a comment below!

    Baby Allergies And Intolerances

One of the first things health care professionals look at when a breastfed baby is extremely fussy or gassy is moms diet. Of course, babies can be fussy or gassy and not have an intolerance or allergy to something moms eating. Other important signs to look out for: rash, hives, eczema, sore bottom, dry skin wheezing or asthma congestion or cold-like symptoms red, itchy eyes ear infections irritability, fussiness, colic intestinal upsets, vomiting, constipation and/or diarrhea, or stools with mucus or blood. I should also note that sometimes the blood in the stool isnt visible. In my friends case the blood was microscopic, so they wouldnt have known if they hadnt had a diaper tested!

If a health care provider thinks your baby is suffering from cows milk protein intolerance or cows milk protein allergy , the typical recommendation is to start by cutting dairy out of the moms diet for a few months and seeing if that improves symptoms. Your health care provider may or may not recommend that you cut out soy at this time as well. After a few months they might recommend reintroducing again to see if the symptoms return or not. Most babies will grow out of the intolerance or allergy by the age of 3.
