Hellofresh Review 201: Dinner In A Box

Food O’Clock – I Make “Hello Fresh Melty Monterey Jack Burgers”

On a recent trip to Whole Foods, I was given a coupon for $30.00 off a HelloFresh box. HelloFresh is a subscription service that sends pre-planned meals right to your doorstep. I know that sometimes days are so busy you dont have time to do a lot of grocery shopping. In that case, this might be a great option for you to consider. I gave it a try and now, its time to share my HelloFresh review with you so you can decide if its the right choice for your family as well.

Meal #: Moroccan Chicken Sausage Tagine

I loved the flavors in this Moroccan inspired dish. Sautéed Chicken Sausage, chickpeas, tomatoes and carrots are seasoned with a Moroccan spice mix then spooned onto a bed of French couscous. There also another spicy mayo drizzle hmm Im noticing a trend!

This meal took about 40 mins to make versus the 35 minutes that the recipe card indicates. It took longer than I thought to make this dish mostly because of the long simmering times. All the steps to make the dish were very easy mostly slicing and simmering ingredients on the stove.

What impressed me the most was the flavor of the dish and how filling it was. I actually had enough food to feed myself and my parents-in-law. I even made a mistake and I think I accidentally threw away half of the spice packet! I was supposed to use that half of the spices on the simmered vegetables. I think the dish would have been even more flavorful if I hadnt messed that up! But honestly the meal was totally delicious even with that mistake.

No other negative comments for this meal! Lots of food and lots of flavor.

Overall I give this meal a 9 out of 10.

Cheeseburgers with Onion Jam Recipe

with Red Onion Jam and Zucchini Fries

  • Monterey Jack Cheese- ½ Cup
  • Potato Buns- 2
  • Ketchup- 2 TBSP

  • prep Wash and dry all produce. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Mince or grate garlic until you have ¼ tsp . Halve, peel, and thinly slice onion. Cut zucchini into 3-inch-long pieces, then halve each piece lengthwise. Cut each into thin wedges.
  • Make Aioli In a small bowl, mix together 1½ TBSP mayonnaise and as much of the garlic as you like. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Make Onion Jam Heat a drizzle of oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add onion and cook until caramelized, 8-10 minutes, tossing occasionally. Stir in balsamic vinegar and 1 tsp sugar. Continue cooking until syrupy, 1-2 minutes more. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from pan and set aside in another small bowl.
  • Make Zucchini Fries While onions are cooking, toss together zucchini and ½ TBSP aioli in a medium bowl until wedges are evenly coated. Add panko, oregano, and a large pinch of salt and pepper and toss so that crumbs stick to zucchini. Spread on a lightly oiled baking sheet. Bake in oven until panko is golden-brown, about 15 minutes, tossing halfway through. TIP: Its OK if not all the breadcrumbs stick.

So Am I Going To Continue With Hello Fresh

The answer is. no. While I enjoyed trying this box, I personally prefer much more vegetables than what the meals have to offer. I also like to pick more whole grains than what was offered for this trial box. Perhaps when you become a weekly subscriber, these options are available to you. But sadly it was not when I looked at the meal options online.

It was very easy to cancel my meal service subscription on the website. I even got an email saying I would get a free meal if I left a review on why I stopped the service, but when I clicked on that link, it took me to a page where I had to reactivate my account. I think its just a ploy to get you back as a customer.

All the meals I chose were easy to make and delicious. Generally the ingredients are good quality but I was disappointed at how quickly the zucchini started to go bad. The meals take a little bit longer than the recipe card indicates so thats one thing to remember if youre pressed on time. Lastly, I really enjoyed trying new flavors such as those in the Moroccan Chicken Sausage Tagine.

I would recommend trying Hello Fresh if youre interested in it because of the convenience factor. I can definitely see it being beneficial for busy, young professionals or people that want to learn more dishes in the kitchen. However, if you have particular food aversions or allergies, you may find the selection somewhat limited for your trial box.

Why Hellofresh Is My New Way Of Cooking

Today was my third and last cooking with Hello Fresh day. For now. So far I have tried Crispy Parmesan Chicken and Figgy Balsamic Pork. Today I cooked Melty Monterey Jack Burgers, 2 of them. They came with made from scratch red onion jam, garlic mayo, and crispy breaded zucchini.

I have to admit that this meal, while still good, was my least favorite.

It might have something to do with the fact that I am never crazy about burgers or that I was tired this evening, but yes, I prefer the other two meals over this one.

As I mentioned in my previous reviews I have been thinking about some type of diet for a while now, but did not enjoy Nutrisystem or Medifast ready-to-eat microwavable meals.

I received Hello Fresh coupon with my Winter FabFitFun subscription box and decided to give it a try because I have heard about them before. The coupon code was for $90 and I definitely applied it.

I ordered 3 meals for 2 people as my husband was in NYC last week and I wanted to share the meals with my two kids who do not enjoy eating.

I made two meals last week and one tonight for me and my husband.

Preparation took about 10 minutes, as expected, cooking 35-40. Besides my own baking dish and a couple of bowls, I also had to supply my own salt, pepper, and olive oil, which I dont mind at all. The entire process went smooth and without incidents until the very end.

    Recipes For Dinner Using Hellofresh

The enchilada dish was not my favorite either. Im in Texas and this seems like a staple dish here. The ratio from green peppers to meat seems completely disproportionate. There were more green peppers than pork. It might be ok but the taste of green peppers was overwhelming. In Texas, we would have to use Pablano peppers. So really did not taste as great as I thought it would.

HelloFresh was completely free! Its pretty easy to get a discount by going to their site and signing up for their email newsletter. I might have paid shipping which is fine. Im glad I tried it out for free its not really something I would do regularly.

I dont follow recipes quite well. The vegetables were not that fresh, and I would rather have a bit more control over selecting produce and selecting which meals to prepare for my family.

If HelloFresh had an option for me to pick specific meals Id be more excited and my child would be more inclined to help out with specific meals she would select and prepare.

Meal #: Ground Beef Bulgogi Bowls

This Asian inspired meal was the highlight of the Hello Fresh box for me. It only took about 25 mins to make and the flavors were bold and enticing. There was actually enough food to feed the whole family when I added some extra vegetables on the side such as a marinated kale salad and more cucumbers. The meal is basically ground beef cooked with a sesame soy sauce, piled on top of white rice and paired with quickly stir fried carrots and quick Pickled Cucumbers. There was even an optional spicy mayo drizzle.

I love the flavor of the sesame sauce and thought it paired beautifully with the Pickled Cucumbers. Plus I loved the crunchy stir fried carrots, although my kids were not fans for some reason.

I had two complaints about this meal:

  • I was missing the tabasco sauce. I double and triple checked the brown paper bag for this meal but did not see the Tabasco for the spicy mayo drizzle. And I checked the recipe card and I was supposed to have Tabasco included. The crises was averted when I substituted Tabasco with sambal oelek instead.
  • Perhaps due to the limited meal options of the free box, you couldnt get anything that didnt contain white rice or white bread. I typically try to use brown rice or wholewheat bread due to the higher fiber content.
  • Overall I would rate this meal an 8 out of 10.

Week Night Dinner With Hellofresh: How It Works

**This is a sponsored post created in partnership with HelloFresh.**

I have written about our week night dinner woes in this space for years.

Even with 16 years in the mom game under my belt, I still struggle with the putting food on the table element of motherhood.

Im busy, and tired, and uncreative in the kitchen. My entire family is discerning , and we are on a short time schedule when it comes to dinner prep and eating.

I know, Im not special in this way all of us are busy, on-the-go moms with unique tastes and allergy issues to address in the kitchen. I probably shouldve figured this out by now, but Im a big enough person to admit that I havent.

And maybe wont? I dont believe this is a problem I will solve completely on my own.

Fortunately I dont even have to feel bad about not being able to.

This beautifully imagined subscription based meal service is every moms answer to week night dinner.

They do all of the hardest parts of family dinner okay, they wont deal with the complaining or the fact that someone wont eat their green beans, but the other exhausting stuff, like menu prep, recipe development, and shopping, totally have it covered.

They make it so that you can have nutritious meals for your family with real food made from fresh ingredients. They come in healthy portions and use ingredients your family isnt going to be weird about.

The HelloFresh box arrived on our door for our review a few days before Christmas.

Why Hellofresh Is My 2022 Dinnertime Go

I know myself. I like my life. I dont want to change one thing. So when it comes to those annoying, guilt-laden New Years resolutions such as: become a badminton rockstar, practice the marimba, take gustatory trips around the world like Anthony Bourdain Im just not that ambitious.

But TBH, I do secretly want to learn how to cook. This is not a new year goal – thats far too much stress for me. So, I’m starting with itty-bitty steps – cooking in my kitchen with the help of a meal kit service. I figured why not look into the biggest name out there and Americas #1 meal kit HelloFresh.

They have a plan for everyone: Meat & Veggie, Family Friendly, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Calorie Smart, and Quick & Easy. I checked out their weekly rotating menu scrolling through colorful images of 23+ chef-curated recipes that take about 30 minutes to prepare. Meal #: Melty Monterey Jack Burgers With Red Onion Jam And Zucchini Fries

These cheesy burgers sounded so great on the Hello Fresh website. But then when I made it, I was quickly disappointed Why? Because of the amount of food.

Im feeding a hungry Texas man so one burger the size of a slider is not going to be enough for his dinner. So I graciously gave him both burgers.

On the upside, the hubby said the flavor of the burgers were great, mostly due to the onion jam. It was basically red onion sautéed till soft then balsamic vinegar and sugar is simmered till the liquid is thick and syrupy.

The other disappointment about this meal was the zucchini. After the ingredients had been in the fridge for 3 days, the Zucchini I received in the brown bag did not look good. About 1/3 of it was very soft and going bad. Luckily I had extra zucchini in the fridge to make the zucchini fries.

I really liked the simplicity of making the zucchini fries. You mix minced garlic with mayo, then use that mixture to coat the zucchini before tossing it in Panko breadcrumbs. Very simple to make and pretty tasty too.

Overall I give this meal a 5 out of 10.
