How To Make A Margarita

Spicy Blood Orange Margarita with a Salty Cinnamon Rim

Even if you’re not the most confident bartender, it’s super easy to make a margarita. Start by pouring salt into a shallow bowl. Rub the rim of your cocktail glass with a lime wedge, then dip it into the salt. Set it aside for the moment.

Next, pour ice into a cocktail shaker. Add the tequila, triple sec, and lime juice and shake it well. About 10 seconds should do. Fill your salt-rimmed cocktail glass with fresh ice. Strain the margarita into the glass, garnish with a lime wedge or wheel, and enjoy!

Homemade Margarita Salt Vs Store Bought

Theres nothing wrong with buying a store-bought salt , but the fun part about making your own margarita salt at home is that you get to choose the flavor profiles. Its like a choose-your-own-adventure book, but with salt! Its so easy and cost-efficient to make, without having to buy a specialty salt, and you likely already have the ingredients you need in your spice drawer.

What Is A Skinny Margarita

What exactly defines a margarita as being skinny versus non-skinny? The sugar content.

The more sugar, which is found in simple syrup, agave, and margarita mixes, the less skinny your margarita will be. Of course, this also means it will taste sweeter.

I sweetened this particular margarita recipe with a little agave, but feel free to sweeten it with simple syrup if you prefer

How To Choose The Best Tequila

Spicy Mango Margarita with a Spicy Tajín Salt rim with fresh or frozen ...

While you really can choose whichever Tequila you prefer, Silver or Blanco Tequila is my go-to for this margarita recipe. It has a more mild flavor and blends super well in margaritas.

Gold Tequila like Anejo is aged longer and is best sipped neat. Reposado is also aged, but in a pinch would be a good second option if you dont have Blanco Tequila on hand.

How Spicy Is This Jalapeo Simple Syrup

Figuring out how spicy to make this simple syrup can be challenging. It will also vary based on a persons preferences.

I want to preface this by saying I am not the type of person who loves spicy food. I get 2 stars when I order Thai food and I rarely add hot sauce to things.

With that in mind, for some reason, I love spicy cocktails. Ive always loved that little tickle you get with each sip of a spicy drink.

When I order a spicy margarita, I want it to be just that. Spicy! It needs to have a kick and this spicy simple syrup delivers.

Dont be scared! Keep in mind that it needs to be very spicy because youre only using a small amount in each drink.

Using 3 jalapeños works perfectly for me, but you can adjust this based on your preferences.

Is This Recipe Good For Blended Drinks

Not really. The addition of blended ice invites a whole new element to cocktail making with different ratios and dilution. Blended margaritas are popular in the summer as there is more ice involved, so if youre looking for more of a slushy, frozen drink try this Frozen Margarita recipe from Isabel Eats.

The Story Behind The Spicy Margarita

While the classic is the worlds favorite tequila cocktail, theres no harm in adding a spicy twist to the tangy drink. In this recipe, the piquancy of birds eye chili enhances the earthiness of the tequilas agave, offering a welcomed contrast to the citrusy sweetness of orange liqueur. This results in a burst of flavor with each sip that is familiar and exciting, all at once.

Crafting the birds eye chili syrup may take a few minutes, but we promise its worth it. The syrups heat will be somewhat tempered by triple secs sweetness, meaning it will be just present enough to give your cocktail a lively kick.

How To Get The Most Juice Out Of Limes

  • When shopping, select heavier fruit with smoother skin.
  • Allow the fruit to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes to an hour. TIP: You can also warm it in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds, but room temp is ideal.
  • Roll the fruit on the countertop while pressing down with the palm of your hand before cutting.
  • Use a juicer that fits smaller fruits like limes so the ribs of the juicer can really dig into the pulp.

How Do You Make Spicy Simple Syrup For Cocktails

I love this simple syrup recipe because it only takes about 15 minutes to make! Prepare your jalapeños first. Remove the stems and cut them into slices.

Add the water into a small saucepan. Heat over a medium-high heat until the water begins to boil.

Add in the granulated sugar and stir continuously until the sugar is fully dissolved.

Add in the sliced jalapeños and turn the heat down to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes.

Pour the mixture through a sieve to remove the jalapeños if you want a milder simple syrup. If youre after more of a kick, leave them in.

Let the simple syrup cool to room temperature, then seal the top and store in the fridge until youre ready to use it. I like to store my simple syrup in mason jars for easy storage.

If youre making this in advance, store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a month.

    The History Of The Margarita

    Spicy Cantaloupe Margarita

Like most classic cocktails, the margarita has a slightly murky history. The predominant story is that Carlos Danny Herrera, the proprietor of a Tijuana-area restaurant called Rancho la Gloria, invented it around 1938 for an aspiring actress named Marjorie King who was allergic to all hard alcohol except tequila. She was a picky drinker, too, so he added the lime and salt to make it taste better.

I gotta say, the more experience I have as a woman sliding into middle age, the more I believe a story about a lady whos allergic to everything but tequila and just plain likes what she likes.

How To Make A Perfect Salt Rim

Last, lets talk about the glass rim in this classic margarita recipe! The best type of salt to use is kosher salt or flaky sea salt: they have a nice chunky texture. Or try our Best Margarita Salt the orange and lime zest makes the glass look perfectly look festive! Here are our tips to making the perfect rim:

  • Spread the salt on a plate in an even layer.
  • Take a lime wedge and cut a notch in the middle: then slide it around the rim of the glass. This perfectly moistens the glass rim without having to use your fingers!
  • To rim the glass, youll want the salt on the outside of the glass only, not the inside where it can fall into the drink. To do this, tilt the glass so that only the outside edge goes into the salt.
  • Shake off any loose salt into the sink.

    How To Make Spicy Margaritas

Start with the rim first. On a plate, mix the smoky salt and chili powder. You can control how spicy you want the margaritas. I put 1 tsp of smoky salt and 1/2 tsp of chili powder but that might be a ridiculous amount of chili for some. So start with a pinch, and work your way up from there.Cut a lime wedge. Hold the glass and run the lime’s pulp along the outside of the rim until it is covered with juice.

Hold the glass upside down and dip the wet rim into the smoky spicy salt. Press gently and twist it around until your glass rim is evenly coated.

Add ice cubes if using. Now it’s time to blend the actual margarita cocktail.

You can use a cocktail shaker or add all ingredients directly into your glass. Use a shot glass as a measuring device. Add 40 ml of silver tequila and 20 ml triple sec. Top up with freshly squeezed lime juice, orange juice and mango juice. Mix all ingredients with a cocktail spoon.Add a lime slice as decoration and served immediately.

That’s it. Super quick and easy to make. To add a few notes as I think these are important.

If you want a super spicy margarita, add a little more chili powder to the smoky salt. To check if it’s good, just press your finger onto the mixture and taste it. Adjust the seasoning so you love it. I normally drink my margarita by working my way around the rim of the glass, this is how much I love the combo of smoky salt and spice.

Do I Have To Put Salt On It Why What Kind

You dont have to have salt with a margarita. If anything, put a pinch in the cocktail before you shake it up to achieve a certain balance, but if you dont care about salt then let that sleeping dog lie.

However, salt does play an important role. Not only does it amplify the sweetness and flavors in a margarita, but it also works to temper bitterness and causes everything to taste brighter and lifted.

    • Select a medium-size grain for this cocktail, like Kosher salt.
    • Do not use iodized table salt. It is a very fine grain, and when used as a rim salt often creates unsightly clumps and tastes harsh due to the sheer concentration of the small grains.
    • Large format grains are pretty, but save your precious Maldon sea salt for another day. If the grains are too big, they will fall off of the glass resulting in hardly any salt at all.
