Hellmann’s Is Actually Called Best Foods In Other Parts Of The Country
If you’re reading this from somewhere west of the Rocky Mountains, you may be scratching your head because you recognize the blue-ribbon jar, but not the Hellmann’s name. That’s because Hellmann’s is instead sold as Best Foods in much of the western United States. The two products share the same recipe, have similar packaging, and are even made in the same factory , but they simply have different names. Why’s that?
As Hellmann’s swept the East Coast in popularity in the early 1930s, California-based mayonnaise brand Best Foods became the spread of choice in the West. Postum Cereal Company took notice, purchasing both Hellmann’s and Best Foods, Southern Living reports. Not wanting to sacrifice either well-known name, the company decided to sell the mayonnaise as Best Foods to the west of the Rocky Mountains and as Hellmann’s in the east. Current company owner Unilever insists that the recipes are identical, but some fans say there’s a difference a HuffPost survey showed that a majority of tasters preferred Hellmann’s over Best Foods, with many saying it tasted sweeter and less tangy than its West Coast counterpart.

Why Did Hellmans Change Their Name
When they bought Hellmanns in 1932, they were wary of changing the brands name, worrying it would cost them devout Hellmanns customers. Thus, the origins of the Best Foods-Hellmanns reign: one mayonnaise recipe, one mayonnaise brand, two unique names. Today, both brands are owned by multinational Unilever.
Hellmann’s Is Working To Help The Environment
If you caught Hellmann’s 2021 Super Bowl commercial with Amy Schumer, you know that the mayonnaise brand is on a mission to reduce food waste. “They’re doing so much work helping people with food insecurity,” Schumer said in a Parade interview about why she is excited to be working with Hellmann’s. “They’ve just educated me about how much food is wasted.” As the brand’s resident Fairy Godmayo, Schumer shares tips on the Hellman’s website about how to waste less food, from freezing leftover pasta sauce to learning how to cook .
Hellmann’s also claims to be working toward a more environmentally friendly production process, using 100-percent cage-free eggs in its mayo and partnering with agricultural organizations to obtain sustainably sourced oils. The brand has also begun packaging some of its products with recycled plastic, and it aims to make all of its materials reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025.

Is Homemade Mayo Healthier Than Store Bought
If you start with citrus and oil from conscientious producers, plus fresh eggs from well-tended hens raised on a natural, pasture-based diet, you’d better believe your homemade mayonnaise will contain vital, health-promoting fats, plus more essential vitamins and minerals than the conventional stuff.
Hellmann’s Helped Popularize The Infamous Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake
Included in Hellmann’s early marketing efforts was a 1937 booklet called Cakes and Cookies With Personality, writes Smith. Among the recipes was the iconic chocolate mayonnaise cake, developed by Mrs. Paul Price and now “an American classic,” featured on the Hellmann’s website to this day.
It’s unknown if Price invented the chocolate mayonnaise cake many websites refer to the dessert as World War II chocolate cake, or Depression-era chocolate cake, because its ingredients reflected the resourcefulness of home cooks during times of scarcity. While eggs, butter, and other pricey ingredients “couldn’t be spared, but there was a jar of mayo in the closet,” those living through the Depression could still make a mean chocolate cake . If you’re skeptical, remember that the main ingredients in mayonnaise are eggs and oil, which are usually included in cake recipes. Plus, the vinegar enhances the flavor of the chocolate, according to Serious Eats.

The Story Behind The Hellmann’s Blue
Hellmann’s Delicatessen originally sold two versions of mayo, so Hellmann used a blue ribbon to distinguish his favorite, a dutifully tested blend of egg yolks, vegetable oil, vinegar, salt, sugar, and other seasonings . Customers also preferred this recipe, requesting the “ribbon version” so often that Hellman began selling jarred mayonnaise with the signature ribbon-adorned label that fans know today.
The History Of Hellmann’s Mayonnaise
While it’s hard to imagine a Southern picnic without mayonnaise, the creamy condiment originated in Europe. It’s exact origin story is bit hazy. It was either created in the mid-1700s when a French chef aghast at the lack of cream during the Seven Years’ War, patiently combined oil and egg yolks into a whipped sauce. Or it came from Spain where it was called salsa mahonesa taking its name from the Port Mahon, on the Mediterranean island of Minorca. Either way, it was the French who popularized the sauce, incorporating it into salads, pairing it with lobster, and generally making mayonnaise a go-to kitchen staple.
After mayonnaise conquered France, it spread to England, Germany, and eventually made its way across the Atlantic to the United States. According to Slate, by 1838, one of the fanciest restaurants in Manhattan, Delmonico’s, offered their well-heeled patrons either chicken or lobster drenched in mayonnaise.
By the late 19th century, home cooks followed in the footsteps of that anonymous French or Spanish chef and made batches of mayonnaise out of oil, vinegar, and eggs in their own kitchens for years to transform eggs into deviled eggs, potatoes into potato salad, and improving sandwiches in lunch bags everywhere. In 1923, President Calvin Coolidge did for mayonnaise was Ronald Reagan did for jelly beans, when he claimed that his Aunt Mary’s homemade mayonnaise was his favorite food.

Hellmann’s Vs Best Foods Mayonnaise: Is There A Difference
You don’t have to tell us at Kitchen Daily that Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and Best Foods Mayonnaise are one and the same — we already know. A while back, when we were conducting a whole-wheat sandwich bread taste test, we became aware of the fact that the same brand will go by different names, depending on which part of the country you’re in.
But consumers claim that’s not true. Just check out the discussion on our and you’ll see that several of our fans think there’s a distinct difference. A few quotes from our followers: “Hellmann’s is better … there is a difference in the amount of sodium used in each brand, that’s why they taste different.” “Hellmann’s is way better than Best.” “Moving to California from the East Coast, Hellmann’s was the first food that I truly missed. Best is not the same.”
So, is the only difference between these two jars of mayonnaise the name on the label? We at Kitchen Daily weren’t so sure. And when in doubt, we like to conduct a taste test to get to the bottom of things.
Before we get to the results, here is a bit of history:
Hellmann’s Hellmann’s was started by a German immigrant, Richard Hellmann, who owned a Deli in New York. It was at this deli that he began to sell ready-made mayonnaise that eventually became the jarred product we know today. Hellmann’s is sold in the U.S. — east of the Rocky Mountains — and in Latin America, Europe, Middle East and Canada.

- When you have used about half of the oil, your mayonnaise should be very thick.
- Add the remaining vinegar solution.
- Now you can add the remaining oil in a steady stream while whisking until all of the oil has been added.
- Your mayonnaise should be thick and off-white in color.
- Put the mayonnaise into an old mayonnaise jar and seal it with a lid.

What Is The Difference Between Mayonnaise And Miracle Whip
By Mavis Butterfield on –
I grew up in a home where Light Miracle Whip was a constant staple in the fridge . I always thought mayonnaise and Miracle Whip were interchangeable.
In my defense, their makeup is practically identical. Miracle Whip contains the same ingredients as mayonnaise: eggs, soybean oil, vinegar but there are a few more spices and additional ingredients that mayo doesnt contain. Aside from that, I just thought if a recipe called for mayo you could sub in Miracle Whip and vice versa.
As an adult with a more refined palate , I now see the error of my ways! Their ingredients might be similar but the taste is so different, with Miracle Whip being much sweeter, spicier, and almost more acidic tasting than mayonnaise. If you sub it into a recipe, youll certainly be able to taste a difference!
But what makes mayo, mayo, and Miracle Whip, Miracle Whip? Are they classified as the same thing? What makes them so different?
Well to start, Miracle Whip isnt considered mayonnaise at all because it doesnt meet the requirements to be mayo . Plus, Miracle Whip has added sugar, paprika, and garlic powder, unlike mayo. So Miracle Whip is its own thing, its own brand. Its a mayo-like product that differs too much from traditional mayo to be called mayo.
