Its that time again! Its camping season. We actually live in campgrounds year round as we travel the country in our RV, but now that it is getting to be summer the kids have started eyeing the outside grills in our sites and begging for some campfire food. There is just something about food that is cooked over an open fire that bring family and friends together. Plus, why does it taste that much better than food cooked indoors?

Either way, its a summer tradition for many to cook outdoors whether by bonfire, dutch oven, or grilling. But sometimes its nice to break out of the mold from the traditional hamburgers, hot dogs and smores.

Keep to simple recipes with your kids and read through the recipe instructions together. Take the recipe a task at a time so they dont get to overloaded with information.

In each of the recipes below, I have outlined a list of tasks that I think are appropriate for both toddlers and kids to do in the kitchen. This section is usually at the bottom of the post before the recipe card.

These tasks are, however, just a guideline.

Its normal that kids skills are all over the place when it comes to cooking some kids will have mastered basic culinary tasks at an early age, while others will only want to sit on the counter, make a mess and eat butter.

Its all about exposure, so meet your kiddo where they are and remember to have fun!

Have a kid who always seems to want to help you make dinner? Im sure you wouldnt mind the help, but if you dont know where to start, below, Ive provided examples of tasks kids can complete based on age as well as recipes that will help them get more confident in their ability to help out.

Once theyve mastered these recipes, you can feel more comfortable delegating some of the cooking on nights when you need an extra pair of hands.

Keep in mind that the list is a general overview, but every childs capabilities will look different, assess where your childs abilities best fit and modify as needed.
