The concept is simple, a bloody mary with tequila instead of vodka. This is a delicious twist on the Classic Bloody Mary. But with this recipe, swap out the vodka with some tequila. We love it because Tequila offers bolder flavors that pair perfectly with the spiciness and smokiness of our mix.
A Brief History Of Bloody Marys
The Bloody Mary was created in the early 1920s by Ferdinand Pete Petiot, a bartender at Harrys American Bar in Paris. Petiot reportedly mixed together a concoction of tomato juice, vodka, Worcestershire Sauce, salt, and pepper. As for the many rumors surrounding the drinks name, Mary Queen of Scots, the actress Mary Pickford, and a lovelorn young woman named Mary who used to nurse these tall, red cocktails at Harrys Bar, are just some of the tall tales linked to this classic drink.
Petiot brought the Bloody Mary to America with him in 1934 to the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. His tomato juice cocktail recipe was adapted to American sensibilities, including the addition of lemon juice and Tabasco. It also experienced a name change, enjoying a brief stint as the Red Snapper. The Bloody Mary became a vodka-based brunch menu mainstay during the 1960s, thanks to an aggressive marketing campaign by Smirnoff.

The Perfect Vegetarian Bloody Mary
Nothing says Happy New Year like a refreshing, vegetarian Bloody Mary on New Years morning. And if you happen to wake up with a slight headache, this drink just might do the trick.
A great quality tomato juice is the key to a delicious Bloody Mary. You can usually find an excellent tomato juice in the juice or alcohol department at your local grocery store. If you are lucky enough to have an Italian section in your grocery store, check there.
Titos vodka is made from potatoes, so if you are worried about gluten, Titos is a brand you can use safely.
Adjust the hot sauce and the horseradish for your own personal taste, adding more or less depending on the amount of heat and spice that you like. I recommend at least a little horseradish for the flavor that it adds to the drink.
For garnish, I have seen everything under the sun stuffed onto the rim of the glass, and have been guilty of the same, fr. We do a Bloody Mary bar every year at our annual fishing derby and here are some of the garnishes that we like to put out:
Dixie Black Pepper Vodka
When it comes to Bloody Marys, I always love to add a vodka with some spice, says head bartender Kris Wheeler of NICO in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. In terms of specifics, Wheeler claims that Dixie Black Pepper Vodka is a must for a perfect Bloody Mary. Tips Before We Get Started
Here are some words youll see across all of the following recipes. As you know, with cocktails, you can shake or stir, but for the following recipes, we are going to use the roll method of mixing. Rolling requires a Boston shaker, whether its two metal tins or one glass & one metal tin. To roll a cocktail means to pour a drink back and forth between the two parts of a cocktail shaker. Vigorously shaking tomato juice creates an unpleasant foamy consistency.
Finally, as we have stated in our previous Bloody Mary post, you can strain into any glass you prefer, but we typically like to use a highball or pint glass. Oh, and you should strain with a Hawthorne strainer.
Add Fresh Cucumber Garlic And Black Pepper
Fresh peeled and seeded cucumber completely disappears into the tomato juice mixture, but adds a lot of fresh flavor.
Fresh garlic and freshly ground black pepper are key flavors as well. Youll add those after youve blended the mixture smooth. Then you can blend the mixture for just a few seconds to retain their texture. Or, you can blend it completely smooth. Up to you!

What Does A Bloody Mary Taste Like
The flavor might catch you off guard if you dont know what to expect. Its spicy, salty, and overall a savory flavor. You get the taste of tomatoes and hot sauce, along with all the other ingredients. It reminds me of vegetable soup and salsa, all rolled into one.
For some, its an acquired taste Ive had a couple Bloody Marys in my life, and to be honest, I didnt always love them. I think this stove top version changed that for me because the flavors really blend well by being cooked together.
Its definitely a unique cocktail, but I think thats what so many people love about it.

- 4 oz. Mr & Mrs T® Bold & Spicy Bloody Mary Mix
- 1 oz. vodka
- Optional: Fresh jalapeños or pickled cherry peppers for garnish

The Sidecar/the Chaser/the Beer Back
Is beer a garnish? For Bloody Marys it sure is! But, with so many beers out on the market, it is hard to know which to pick! So, you need something that will pair well with the flavor profile of the Bloody but still be its own thing.
Personally, I would stick with lighter beers: Pilsners, Light Lagers, Pale Ales, and some IPAs. The hoppiness of the Pale Ales and IPAs pair perfectly with the spicy, where as, the light, crispness of Pilsners and Light Lagers help cut the abundance of flavors in the Bloody.
STAY THE F*** AWAY FROM DARK BEER! Especially, Chocolate Stouts and Porters. While delicious, they are just garbage for pairing with Bloodies.

Guy’s Pig And Anchor Bloody Mary
If you have been to a Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse you know that their cocktails are epic! We shared their Bacon Manhattan last year and it is still a favorite.
I am so excited that Carnival was willing to share their recipe for this bloody mary! I mean how can you go wrong when there is bacon in a cocktail.
Currently, the Guys Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse can be visited on the Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama. There will also be a restaurant on the brand new Carnival Mardi Gras when it hits the open waters.
This was one of our favorite restaurants on the Carnival Panorama. John is in love with the trash can nachos. Don’t even get him started on the Pig & Anchor Melt that is loaded with pulled pork, sliced brisket, double pork belly, smoked gouda, cheddar, homemade pickles, and donkey sauce…oh my!
Onboard the ship you can hog size your Pig & Anchor Bloody Mary to a 32oz drink served in a giant mason jar.
The Garnishes And Tips
Dont get me wrong, I love those insane Bloody Marys that have a full Fried Chicken, 7 Cheeseburger Sliders, and a Chicago Style Pizza on top. From what I have found though, they usually dont have a very good Bloody Mary underneath. There are a couple that prove this wrong In all honesty, simple is sometimes better. To me, a well thought out garnish-ment that pairs well with the Bloody flavors are FAR more important! For my Bloody Mary Bar and mix, the classic garnishes are all that is necessary and also what pairs best!

Veggie Infused Titos Vodka
This Bloody Mary starts with by making a veggie-infused Titos Vodka for the Bloody Marys base. In a liter container add garlic, chopped bell peppers, onions, carrots, and olives. If you want it spicy add a couple cut up jalapenos to the mix, Id take the seeds out Add 750 ml of Titos vodka ensuring it covers the top of your veggies. Leave the mixture on the counter and after a couple of days infusing youre ready!

Heres the secret to a great Bloody Mary, you dont want to shake or stir your Bloody Mary. Instead Roll or pour it back and forth between the two shakers a few times to mix all of the ingredients. Rolling the drink allows everything to mix while maintaining the great texture of the tomato juice by not diluting it
