Recipe Variations And Tips
- When youre in a pinch, you can use Greek yogurt, but you wont get the same creamy tang that sour cream gives the dip.
- Low and slow is the key to perfectly caramelized onions. Resist the temptation to increase the heat to speed things up!
- I like serving the dip with toasted or untoasted baguette, crinkle-cut potato chips, and fresh veggies!

French Onion Dip Ingredients
Theres just a handful of ingredients in this recipe and a few potential variations, which Ill mention below:
- Sour Cream: I always buy organic sour cream for the highest quality, but its up to you.
- Mayonnaise: My mom always added a little mayo in her French onion dip recipe so thats what I do as well. And you cant beat homemade mayonnaise for freshness.
- Caramelized Onions: Golden and sweet caramelized onions add so much flavor. Pro tip: you can make these ahead of time.
- Chives: Fresh chives are finely chopped for little flecks of green goodness.
- Parsley: Because more greens and herbs are always better.
- Salt and Pepper: Which you can season to your liking

What French Onion Dip Is Made Of

Heres what you need for this recipe. Just a note on a few of the items:
-
The dip base is cream cheese , mayonnaise and sour cream
-
Less butter as much as I love Ina Garten, I often find myself cutting down the fat she uses in her recipes quite substantially. This is one such example. The original recipe called for 4 tablespoons of butter AND 1/4 cup of oil. I swear, this does NOT need that much way too rich! I made it with 3 tablespoons of butter, no oil, which is plenty and
-
Hint of spice adds a touch of extra flavour and warmth to the dip!

Move over Sour Cream. Move over Ranch. There’s a new sheriff in town, and his name is French Onion. His authority, once relegated to potato chips and a tasty soup, has expanded, and he can now be seen strutting his stuff around town.
French Onion is chomping at the bit to show what he is capable of, and lucky for me, I was able to get a sneak peak of his tour to conquer the world. Here is what I got to see.
Easy French Onion Mashed Potatoes
If you love French Onion dip you will love my French Onion Mashed Potatoes that are a breeze to whip up and require minimal ingredients!
Yesterday was my birthday, and though it is only January, I am fairly confident it was one of the top three birthdays I’ll have all year. I spent the day cooking, went out to eat, and went to bed early. What else could you want? Well, perhaps a great side dish recipe like these Easy French Onion Mashed Potatoes!
French Onion Dip is my favorite chip dip. There is just something intoxicating about its deep creamy flavor coating a salty potato chip. I can’t get enough. It got me thinking, if it is good on a potato chip, why not in potatoes? Afterall, we often add cream cheese and sour cream to mashed potatoes anyways, French Onion dip would serve the same purpose while also adding flavor.
The question then becomes, “How much French Onion dip to add?” This is where it becomes subjective. I really like the flavor of French Onion dip and I wanted it to be pronounced in the mashed potatoes, so I used the full 16-ounce container. However, if you enjoy the flavor to be more subtle 8-12 ounces will suffice.

California Onion Dip History
As the story goes, in 1954, two years after Lipton introduced its dry onion soup mix, a now-unknown housewife in Southern California stirred a dry soup packet into a pint of sour cream and made a savory potato chip dip.
Her recipe was reprinted in newspapers countless times, and by the end of the 1950s, it had become a house-party classic, perfectly suited for mid-20th-century Americas new style of informal entertaining on the patio or in the family room.
French onion dip is often served at parties and as a “classic holiday party offering”. It has also been described as “an American classic”. Try this dip as a spread on hamburgers, sandwiches, tacos, or top a baked potato.

How To Make French Onion Dip
It only takes five minutes!
If my dad has potato chips, he insists on having French onion dip. I remember him going to the store and selecting a certain brandit had to be that specific brand or it was no good. If the store didn’t carry it, it was pretty much the end of the world.
When I was a teenager and beginning to take a serious interest in cooking and nutrition, I thought to myself that there must be a way to make my dad’s beloved French onion dip more healthy. The ingredient list on the store-bought version was long and complicated. My dad insisted that, to make the party dip at home, you had to buy dried onion soup mix. The mix was filled with just as many unpronounceable ingredients as the dip itself, so I thought it was a hopeless business.
I tried my hand at making caramelized sweet onion dips. They were delicious, but a completely different flavor than the dip my dad loved. Then, I decided to simplify things and just throw some herbs and spices into sour cream . To my surprise, it tasted very close to the pre-packaged dip. My dad even commented on how good it was.
True, this dip isn’t an exact replica of store-bought French onion dip. But mine doesn’t contain MSG. And it’s quite similar, in my opinion. Plus, it’s super, super easy to mix up.
Making your own French onion dip is a lot simpler than you think. Simply stir some dried herbs and spices into sour cream, and you have a delicious, addicting healthy snack.

How To Serve French Onion Dip
Hands down, the BEST thing to dip in Onion Dip is plain crinkle cut potato crisps. This is an American thing that hasnt yet made it across the waters.
And it might sound strange to some people, dunking potato crisps in dip.
But trust me. For French Onion Dip, plain potato crisps are the BEST. Better than corn chips, better than crackers, better than bread. It beats em all! Nagi x
Storage And Serving Tips

SERVE: Along with most recipes with dairy in them, this dip should not sit out longer than two hours.

What Homemade French Onion Dip Tastes Like
Its a creamy dip, a gorgeous soft creamy texture rather than the rock-hard dips you get from the grocery store where your chips break every time you try to scoop some up.
The caramelised onion infuses it with beautiful flavour thats savoury with natural sweetness theres no sugar in this recipe, its all from the natural caramelisation of the onion!
Its great on the day its made, but its even better the next day once the flavours have had time to meld together even more!
Why Bake Mashed Potatoes
Lately, I have been a big fan of baking my mashed potatoes for the lighter texture it provides. However, it won’t reheat as well, as I find the reheated mashed potatoes to be a bit on the dry side. Still, for the initial meal, you can’t beat it! Using a simple 2-quart baking dish is perfect for this recipe.

Is Homemade French Onion Dip Worth The Effort
In our column Fake It or Make It we test a homemade dish against its prepackaged counterpart to find out what’s really worth cooking from scratch.
I can’t really explain why I eat the foods that I do while watching sports on TV. Normally I’m devoted to fresh ingredients–even organic ingredients–but some sort of voodoo takes hold when televised athletics enter the equation. Nachos? Bring it. Ruffles? Yes, please. And definitely, definitely pass the French onion dip.
I’m not repentant or anything. “Everything in moderation,” as the old saying goes. And when it comes to this nation’s iconic foods, French onion dip is right up there with the iceberg wedge salad and Klondike Bars. It’s an American classic. I typically get my French onion fix from a jar, so I couldn’t help but wonder: Is it worth going the extra mile to make it from scratch?
Alton Brown’s Onion Dip vs. Lay’s French Onion Dip
Ironically, French onion dip is about as American as apple pie. Also known as “California Dip,” the sour cream and onion party snack is the brainchild of an anonymous west coaster who in 1954 mixed then-new Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix with sour cream. The dip spread like wildfire. These days, it garnishes potato chips or crudites, and is mostly bought premade, manufactured by the likes of Lay’s, Kraft, and Wise.
Minimal. The dip took a total of 25 minutes to make, between chopping the onions, sauteing them, and mixing the ingredients into the final product.
First let me introduce our panel.
Homemade Dry French Onion Dip Mix
Ill admit it. I actually like the Lipton onion mix stuff. You know, the stuff in the envelope that can be used to make soup or dip? Ive never used it to make soup but as a dip it tastes pretty good. Tear open the envelope, pour the contents into a bowl of sour cream, stir, refrigerate for 30 minutes, pull out a bag of your favorite potato chips, sit back and *crunch, munch, crunch.*
BUT you know how it is with most pre-prepared food items. The list of ingredients always includes strange things that really just dont belong there. So if you can make the same thing without all the junk that tastes just as good or better, plus is way cheaper to make yourself, why wouldnt you make it, right? Right!
Heres a copycat recipe version of the dry French onion dip mix you can throw together in 2 minutes and youll love the results.
And it also makes a cute little gift idea.
Its as simple as combining a few dry ingredients together and then mixing it in with the sour cream. It only takes a couple of minutes to put together, but you can also make a few dried dip mixes in advance to have on hand when you need them. This recipe is the equivalent of one envelope of dried onion soup mix.
Lets get started!
Combine everything but the sour cream in a small bowl. I use msg-free beef broth granules.
Add the dip mix to the sour cream in a medium-sized bowl.
Stir to thoroughly combine and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, preferably an hour, before using.

Jim’s French Onion Dip
I reverse-engineered Old Dutch French Onion Dip and created an easy “Fresh” alternative that I personally think tastes far better than Old Dutch or Lays without all the unpronounceable additives and preservatives. I hesitated to refer to this as a Copycat recipe, as it is an insult with how fresh, flavorful, and tasty this amazing dip truly is. Once you try this, I’m sure you would regret ever needing to buy a store bought brand version ever again! This French Onion Dip makes a perfect chip or vegetable dip and you are sure to gobble it up!! The suggested number of servings may appear to be a little high, but according to Nutritional Data, 1 suggested serving size for dip from a commercial product is 2 Tbls.
