The modern versions use bittering agents, aromatics aka flavors, alcohol.

  • All sorts of roots, barks, bitter leaves, and citrus peel. You could buy , 1 oz of gentian root for $7, and many other wood / leaf bittering ingredients, but youll only save money if you make a shelf worth of bottles to sell to friends and family. Consider using the peels of citrus fruits youre already eating on a regular basis. Repurpose them!
  • Limitless spices, herbs, flowers, fruits, nuts, cacao or coffee. I raided our spice cabinet for ALL winter spices and dumped them in the mixture. If I didnt have whole spices, I steeped the powders in hot water, filtered the blend and poured it into the mason jar. My goal: HUGE flavor & money saved. If you cook or bake on the regs, just use what you have.
  • Grain alcohol. The higher the proof / ABV, the faster the extract rate of flavor. The faster the extraction, the sooner your bitters will be ready for mixing. Youre essentially making an extract. Everclear, 100 proof vodka , or any leftover liquor / whiskey youre not going to use. Ango Aromatic is 44.7% ABV and their orange bitters are 28% ABV. Starting with a 40% liquor will work beautifully.

    If You Want To Experiment Try Different Bitters

    Angostura bitters is traditionally used in an Old Fashioned.

    You can’t go wrong with Angostura bitters, but if you’re making an Old Fashioned in the winter or around the holidays, I recommend using a few dashes of Fee Brothers Old Fashioned Bitters instead. You get way more cinnamon and clove on the nose, like a winter holiday in a bottle.

    I like this drink with bourbon. I used Buffalo Trace most recently, but other mid-tier bourbons like Maker’s Mark, Bulleit, or Knob Creek would all be excellent choices.

    Eagle Rare Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, another winner from Buffalo Trace, is worth every penny if you’re willing to shell out the heavy price tag, that is. This bourbon is “aged for no less than ten years,” and as many wine and whiskey enthusiasts can attest to, the longer a liquid marinates, the more unique the flavor, not to mention *chef’s kiss* refreshing.

    According to buffalotracedistillery.com, “Every barrel is discriminately selected to offer consistent flavor but with a seemingly individual personality.” What makes it so special outside of how it’s aged? For starters, the bourbon whiskey is accompanied by “aromas of toffee, hints of orange peel, herbs, honey, leather and oak.” Buffalo Trace describes the taste as “bold, dry and delicate with notes of candied almonds and very rich cocoa.”

    Clearly, Eagle Rare is more than sufficient by itself, and not everyone wants to sweeten or water down the flavor with the ingredients of an old fashioned. Trust us, you won’t regret this mixture’s rare taste.

    Today I drove through the State of Kentucky in my van on my way to Charleston, South Carolina. Kentucky is the home of bourbon, and there are 37 distilleries, including Makers Mark. Some distilleries are as close as eight miles, and others are as far as 70 miles apart. Each distillery offers tours and helps you understand their craft process for making bourbon. You can find tasting rooms, bourbon flights, gift shops and many unique barrel-aged bourbons only for sale at the distillery itself.

    The Makers Mark distillery is on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The red wax on the bottles is as recognizable as the Makers Mark name. Generations of the Samuels family distillers have carried forth a recipe from prohibition to become one of the worlds most beloved bourbon brands.     Bourbon whiskey is made from a combination of different grains. Woodford Reserves recipe comprises 18% rye, a relatively high amount for bourbon, which will provide chocolatey, spicy notes in the whiskey.     A serious stirred-down whiskeydrink, the Old Fashioneds roots hail back over 200 years, to the first published definition of a cocktail in the snappily titled The Balance and Colombian Repository in 1806.

    With a 100-proof makeup, Four Roses Single Barrel isn’t messing around, and it’s aged a minimum of seven to nine years for good measure. It’s good straight up, on the rocks, or, of course, in an old fashioned. The Four Roses website describe this bourbon as “complex, full-bodied and surprisingly smooth with a delicate, long finish that’s unbelievably mellow.” Continuing this bourbon whiskey adventure, Four Roses says the Single Barrel’s nose consists of “Dried spice, pear, cocoa, vanilla and maple syrup.” The palate is characterized as “Hints of ripe plum and cherries, robust, full body, mellow.” The finish is “Smooth and delicately long.” Smooth and delicately long is the perfect way to describe the ideal bourbon.

    Four Roses Single Barrel is surprisingly affordable for a single barrel and it’s only a matter of time before it becomes your regular given this factor, not to mention the smoothness, unique taste, and overall quality it brings to the glass.

    This is ideal for enjoying with your friends on a winter evening. In a mixer, combine well 1 oz of each of Makers Mark 46 and Starbucks Cream Liqueur. Transfer it into a coffee mug.     As the decades rolled by, the methods of making the Whiskey Cocktail became sloppy, leading to connoisseurs requesting their Whiskey Cocktails be made the old-fashioned way.

    While the exact origins of the Old Fashioned as a drink in its own right have been lost to the mists of time, the first published mention was in Theodore Proulxs Bartenders Manual in 1888.

    It enjoyed a renaissance in the noughties and 2010s thanks in part to the popularity of tv show Mad Men protagonist Don Draper was partial to this alluring classic cocktail.     You know, the ones that include bitters. The intensely concentrated tincture of herbaceous, earthy, resinous, bitter or citric flavor explosion. Your favorite bevs wouldnt be the same without these old school bittering agents. But what the heck are they? Where did they come from??

    Makers 46 Old Fashioned

    Im an old fashioned guy. I love the cocktail and if Im out with my better half this is my favorite cocktail to sip on. If you enjoy the this classic southern drink than you need to start having it made with Makers Mark 46.

    So if you are like me and not really into the whole martini scene and you absolutely despise those who get frozen cocktails, maybe the old fashioned has been calling your name. Personally I have a strong love for my brown liquors whisky, scotch, bourbon, rye, and brandy. Up until recently have I found that Makers Mark 46 is the absolute ideal choice for the perfect old fashioned. Why? Old fashioneds consist of four things bourbon, bitters, sugar, and a solid lemon peel. Makers 46 takes French oak barrel staves and drops them in a barrel of Makers Mark when the bourbon is finished sitting after six years. These heavily flavored staves sit in the barrel for an additional three to six months, leaving the batch heavy with vanilla and caramel, without bringing too much of a heavy bitter taste. This makes that batch of Makers Mark have a lot more sugar content then a regular batch thus creating Makers Mark 46. So in hindsight if I enjoy a cocktail that consists of sugar, being one of four ingredients, than logistically a sweeter bourbon would help create a better cocktail.

    So there it is, my take on an old fashioned with a bourbon that needs some more recognition. Give it a try next time you are out, your sever or bartender will appreciate it.

    Makers 46 Traditional Old Fashioned

    Pam walked the group through making a traditional Old Fashioned. Her version includes 2 parts Makers 46, 3 dashes of bitters of choice, sweetener of choice and citrus peel of choice. Simple syrup is by far the easiest sweetener option since it is simple to make and dissolves easily in cocktails. Honey and maple syrup are also terrific sweetener options. Keep the measurements the same, but swap bourbon for rum in this rum old fashioned when using maple syrup. If you opt for regular granulated sugar, I suggest dissolving it in the whiskey before adding any other ingredients including ice.

    Pams wedding trick: make an old fashioned, but dont add ice. Instead pour the ingredients into a flask to take on the go. When ready to drink, just pour it over ice in a rocks glass.

    Pam talked about using different citrus peels, flavored syrups, and different styles of bitters for slight variations in the drink. The suggestion of grapefruit peel intrigued me, so I asked what flavor of syrup she would recommend when using grapefruit. She suggested chamomile. So I decided to make a chamomile tea infused syrup with grapefruit twist for my old fashioned.

    During the webinar we learned that 3 drops equals 1 dash. So if your bitters bottle has an eye dropper, use 3 drops for every dash called for in a recipe.

    What Tools You Need To Make The Makers Mark Manhattan

    Makers Maple Old Fashioned Recipe

    You wont be needing a cocktail shaker for this one! Grab a jigger, a mixing glass, barspoon, strainer, and an Old Fashioned glass , chilled cocktail glass or martini glass. Just make sure you use fresh ice cubes, because its an ingredient too!

    Its a simple cocktail, but one of the great cocktails of all time, so dont be intimidated.

    Brown Butter Old Fashioned

    If youve never tried a brown-butter-washed bourbon Old Fashioned, then drop whatever youre doing and get to it. There are few flavors that pair better with bourbon than the rich nuttiness of brown butter. The process of washing the bourbon is simple: Heat unsalted butter in a saucepan until it lightly browns and has a nutty aroma. Then combine the browned butter with a bottle of bourbon in a heavy-duty Ziploc, toss it in the freezer overnight to freeze the fat, then skim off the solids. That bourbon base is combined with a complementary brown-sugar syrup and Angostura bitters before being garnished with the usual orange twist and a Luxardo maraschino cherry.

    How To Make An Old Fashioned

    A revered drink, many assume that making an Old Fashioned is difficult and time-consuming, but that couldnt be further from the truth. First, choose the best whiskey a quality American whiskey bourbon or rye is required. This is a serious cocktail where the spirit stands front and centre, with no bells and whistles to distract from its flavour.

    Sugar is required. In the past bartenders would most likely have used loaf sugar, nowdays a sugar cube is often used, although some do make use of a pre-made sugar syrup.

    If not using a syrup, the sugar cube needs to be diluted, and the best way to do this is to soak it in a couple of dashes of bitters, add a dash of water and muddle or stir them.

    The traditional bitters used in an Old Fashioned no longer exist, and todays go-to brand is Angostura, a safe option that produces a solid drink. For those wanting to explore the history of the cocktail further, Dr Adam Elmegirabs Bokers Bitters recreates one of the classic bitters that were used.

    For those interested in experimenting further, changing the bitters can produce interesting yet subtle variations in flavour.

    There has been much misconception over the use of fruit in an Old Fashioned over the decades. Cocktail purists would baulk at the idea of muddling fruit in it steer clear and simply add an orange twist.
