First Prepare The Bake Batter

Homemade Brown Sugar Cinnamon Applesauce

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two 9-inch round cake pans with baking spray with flour. Set aside.

In a medium bowl whisk together the flour, pumpkin spice, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl combine the butter and sugars and mix until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and blend on low until incorporated. Add the applesauce, vanilla and half the dry ingredients. Blend on low until combined. Add all remaining flour mixture and blend again. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl with a spatula. Beat on high for 2 minutes.

Divide the batter between the two prepared pans. Bake, then cool before frosting.

You can easily make this applesauce in your crock-pot. Here’s how.

1. Add apples to the slow cooker.

2. Squeeze the lemon over the apples. Toss to coat with a spoon.

How To Make Homemade Applesauce

  • Peel, core, and dice your apples. Place them in a large pot .
  • Add water, sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon sticks and stir to combine.
  • Bring everything to a simmer over medium heat before covering and cooking on medium/low for 20-30 minutes, stirring just once or twice . Your apples should be completely soft and tender when pierced with a fork, the apple should offer essentially no resistance!
  • Remove from heat and discard cinnamon sticks. Then puree, blend, or mash the apples. If you like your applesauce thicker, you can return it back to the stove, otherwise, simply let it cool and enjoy!
  • SAMS TIP: This applesauce recipe calls for an immersion blender, but you can also use a potato masher instead. Your applesauce wont be as fine/smooth this way, but as long as you cook your apples properly, it will still work. Alternatively, you can also just transfer your sauce to a blender and blend in batches.

    Im celebrating apple harvest season by making my recipe for brown sugar spiced applesauce. This applesauce combines all the flavors of fall with with pumpkin pie spice to give it that rich flavor. Once you taste it its hard not to think of apple pie. The vanilla and touch of apple cider vinegar only brings out the sweetness of the fruit. Not only is this sauce great on its own but fabulous spooned over pork chops, stirred in yogurt or warmed up over ice cream.

    Make this super easy stove top applesauce recipe in under an hour.

    1. Wash and cut up the apples. Add them to a large pot or Dutch oven.

    • Apples: I like to use either Golden Delicious or Granny Smith apples. Golden Delicious apples are sweet, crisp, and firm, which makes them perfect for applesauce. Granny Smith apples are tart, crisp and firm, which also makes them perfect for applesauce. You could also use: Honey Crisp, Fuji, Gala, Macous, or Red Delicious.
    • Zero point white or brown granulated sugar substitute: I love the flavor that the brown sugar sweetener gives these baked apples, so I use Lakanto monkfruit golden sweetener in this particular recipe. However, you can use either a zero point white sugar sweetener or a brown sugar sweetener. Now, if you prefer an unsweetened applesauce-you can just omit the sweetener all together!
    • Lemon juice: preserves the color and balances the acidity of the apples.
    • Water: thins out the applesauce.
    • Cinnamon: adds delicious flavor but if you wanted to omit it. Feel free to substitute it with nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice.

    Pour prepared applesauce into jars: Fill jars with applesauce leaving 1/2 of headspace. Use a small rubber spatula to scrape down the inside of the jar and remove any air bubbles. Wipe jar rims clean. Process in water-bath canner for 20 minutes. Allow to rest at room temperature for 24 hours. Press down on the center of the lid: it should not pop back. If it sits flat it is safe, but if it pops back, it has not sealed properly, and it should be stored in the fridge and consumed.

    If your applesauce starts to develop a fowl odor, become discolored, or if you see signs of mold, these are signs of spoilage and you should discard it!

    • 10 small apples

    • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
