What Smells Are Deer Attracted To
There is an art to using scents to attract deer. Some people say that using urine from a buck is the best way to attract deer, and others have many different theories. The truth is that you need to understand the deer and the different situations that leave a scent and the impact they have on deer.
You need to use a scent to cover your tracks. Remember that your feet will kick up leaves and dirt when you are walking in the woods, and there is a scent already built-in. It could smell like a fox or a squirrel that has left its scent behind. If the ground is disturbed and there is an unfamiliar scent that accompanies it, the deer can become suspicious. You should try to make sure that you leave a scent behind when you kick up the leaves and dirt. In this case, you can use doe urine.
As far as scents that draw deer to your hunting stand, you want to use something irresistible. You can buy fancy concoctions from a hunting store, or you can make your own using something that the deer find irresistible. Vanilla is one great option, but there are others as well.
You can make an apple-scented lure at home. You can take a plastic tub and fill it with pine needles and dead leaves. Then, you can chop up some apples in your blender and blend them until it is creamy. Pour some water in with the apples, and then you can soak a cloth in the mixture. Leave it there for an hour, and then you can put it into a Ziploc bag and seal it until you plan to use it.

Vanilla Ice Your Deer Down
Another easy and effective way to attract deer is to use plain ole vanilla extract. Using it is simple. Heres how you do it: Get a container of vanilla extract and either put it in a spray bottle and saturate some of the vegetation around your stand or use a wick , pour extract on it and hang it from a tree.
Also, for those days when its really cold you can improve the scent distribution by putting some vanilla in a small tin can stacked on top of another tin can with a candle inside the bottom one. You will have to create a few holes in the bottom can so the candle can burn, bu the heat helps spread the scent during frigid temps.
How To Mix Vanilla Extract For Deers
So what you will need to make this vanilla extract are the following:
Once you have all the ingredients with you, what you need to do is take 0.2 oz of the oil, 1 oz of pure vanilla extract, and 8 oz. of water and pour them one after another in a mixing bowl. Now with the help of a whisk or an egg beater, you will mix the items to create a frothy, semi-transparent mixture. Now, gently pour the mixture into the spray bottle, and youre done creating your vanilla deer allure! Just remember, since oil and water do not mix, each time you think of using this to allure bucks and deers, you will have to shake the spray bottle before you spritz.

Using Kool Aid To Attract Deer
I find the deer bomb mentioned above is one of the best ways to attract deer using kool-aid. However, if you prefer to use the kool-aid as is its still a very good attractant.
Some homemade tests with a game camera and two piles of feed show 90% of deer and other animals prefer the pile with kool-aid.
I like to mix the kool-aid with some corn. I make a pile of deer corn and sprinkle over a good amount of kool-aid. I find it stands up to weather well and even light rain. The does wash it into the ground but the scent and flavor still remain there for a few days.
The great thing about using it as is, is that its fast, doesnt require preparation, and can be topped up easily.
Why Are Deer Attracted To Vanilla Extract
Deer are attracted to different scents for different reasons. Deer, like most animals, are curious when encountering the super sweet smell of vanilla.
Vanilla may appeal to deers food senses and signal a need to forage. Biologists suggest deer may recognize some of the comforting musky, floral, earthy, and even smoky components of vanillas aroma, as edible.
Some claim that the scent of vanilla smells similar to that of white oak acorns in the wild.

What Is The Best Way To Use Vanilla To Attract Deer
The best way to use vanilla to attract deer is to dilute it with water and put it into a spray bottle. You can also add it to boiling water and then soak a cloth in it. You can put the cloth into a sealed Ziploc bag, and it will hold the scent until the next time you go hunting.
When you get to the area where you plan to hunt, you can take the cloth out and run it on the trees and stumps. This will be just enough to attract the deer without frightening them away. You could also use the spray bottle to spray this area. You can also mix a little bit of vanilla with peanut butter and hang the jar from a tree. Should I Set Up A Game Camera To See If The Deer Bomb Is Working
Watching the antics of deer in a feeding frenzy on these Kool-Aid bombs provides some quality entertainment. Its like a hidden camera at a party. The deer lose their usual calm, careful demeanor when they discover the fruit-flavored mix of powdered sugar and salt.
Deer naturally follow fruit in the fall and they love salt year-round. Sweet corn is often raided by marauding deer, apples are pulled from trees, cabbage out of the ground, and even tomatoes are not safe from nighttime whitetail raids.
Deer are smart enough to know when a tomato is ripe, theyll never pull a green one off the vine, but at times theyll pull up the entire tomato plant, eat the ripe fruit and leave the green ones.
When Is The Best Time Of Year To Use Vanilla Extract
Early hunting season is the best time to use a vanilla extract as an attractant.
During this time of year, deer are focused on food and not the rut. Their priority is building up fat reserves before winter sets in and the scent of vanilla is a food-related smell, as opposed to a predatory smell.
Most of their energy come from fats and carbohydrates, mast from fruit trees like apples, acorns, and blackberries. Deer will be attracted to the sweet aroma of the vanilla.
