Before you scoop some of your body butter out of the jar, you want to make sure to wash your hands in order to avoid introducing bacteria to the jar.

Apply a generous amount of body butter to your skin, allowing a few moments for the warmth from your skin to make the butter more spreadable. I personally love to slather it on after bathing or showering, because my warm skin makes it easy to apply and it keeps my skin soft all day!

Use your body butter as often as desired for softer, more moisturized skin. 🙂 I hope youll give it a try and let me know what you think, whether you use it yourself or make it to give as Christmas gifts!

Ingredients: Makes 3/4 cups of body butter

  • 3/4 cup of oil
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup of shea or cocoa butter
  • 15 drops of essential oil

Tools you need to make body butter

  • A double boiler

There are a lot of different ways to make body butter, but it really relies on a three-ingredient formula, Simpson tells me. Generally speaking, you want a combination of an oil, a butter, and some essential oil to add some extra oomph to your mixture.

To get more specific. Simpson tells me the the most compatible staple ingredients for a good body butter include either organic solid virgin coconut oil or essential almond oil , and either shea butter or cocoa butter . As for essential oils, it’s pretty much whatever scent or scents sound the most appealing.

Need a few recommendations? Some essential oils that work well with body butters include peppermint, bergamot, rosewood, geranium, essential orange, lavender, eucalyptus, grapefruit, patchouli, frankincense, and rosemary.

“These base ingredients provide the foundation for the body butter consistency and offer nourishing and ultra-hydrating properties for the skin,” says Simpson. “Essential oils can calm or stimulate the senses with their aromatherapy benefits, and offer antioxidant, microbial balancing, circulatory or soothing effects for the skin.”

When you’ve rounded up the whole gang, you just follow the appropriate steps.

How To Make Whipped Body Butter

Ingredients: You will need 1/3 cup coconut oil, 1/3 cup shea butter, 1/3 cup cocoa butter wafers, 1/3 cup jojoba oil, 2 tsp arrowroot powder, and essential oils.

To make body butter, you will melt the coconut oil, cocoa butter, and cup shea butter in a double boiler or saucepan over low heat. If a double boiler isnt available, a large pyrex measuring cup will work instead.

Next, remove the melted cocoa butter and oils from the heat and mix in the jojoba oil and essential oils. Mix well to incorporate the essential oils.

Pour the mixture into a large kitchen aid bowl and place in the refrigerator. Chill until its solid, about two hours. Alternatively, you can use the freezer to cool the oils.

Once the mixture is solid, remove the bowl from the fridge, place the bowl into the kitchen aid, and whip the body butter . Add arrowroot powder and continue to beat until the body butter is light and airy. Note: You can make whipped chocolate body butter by adding two tablespoon of cocoa powder to this body butter.

Finally, scoop the body butter into a glass jar and store it in a cool, dry place.

Body butter is one of those luxurious body care products that I covet. For a long-time I used store bought and recently discovered that with so few ingredients and with my trusty boy-friend on the case that I could make my own at a fraction of the cost!

Shea and cocoa are my two favourite types of base carriers for any moisturizing cream or body butter, and since making it on my own I decided to merge the two together. I think the best part about making my own apothecary products is how completely customizable they are. You could use mango butter or other oils in this or just one base butter. Its all up to you!

I used to alternate between using coconut oil and the body butters I purchased to moisturize as I found that while the coconut oil absorbed really quickly, I still felt a bit dry after a while. I thought I could just get away with using the raw cocoa or shea butter a few times a week or as needed, but its quite heavy on its own and takes a long-time to absorb. The remedy has been to experiment and combine my favourite ingredients until I found something that mimiced my store purchases in texture, feel, absorbency and moisturizing staying power.

Shea Butter:This is the big daddy of moisturizers for your skin. Rich in vitamin E and A, this is another hypo-allergenic, rich and deeply moisturizing raw form of HYDRATION for skin of all ages.

Homemade Coconut Oil And Shea Body Butter

Whipped Body Butter Recipe DIY Shea Butter

I am addicted to skin moisturizers. As soon as I finish washing my hands or taking a shower, I MUST put one on. My hands feel dry and almost seem to ache without it.

My addiction to skin moisturizers like lotion and body butter is probably because I was born and raised on the desert planes of Colorado. Static electricity is high and mold is practically non-existent in such an environment because dryness reins supreme. So, in an attempt to evade cracked skin and to encourage nourished, soft skin, lotion it is.

Unfortunately, many commercial lotions are chock full of super unhealthful ingredients which I really would rather not being absorbed into my body. As a result, I make my own lotion.

Homemade lotion is pretty versatile. In my recipe, I use herb-infused oil. Some good herbs to use when infusing oil are lavender and chamomile. You can Google herbs that are good for skin to find others.

Infusing oil is super easy. Just place some dried herbs in the bottom of a jar , pour the oil over them, and seal. Keep in a cool, dry place for a week or more . Strain before using.

Another good element to add to the recipe if you want to is one or more essential oils. Essential oils can increase the nutritive value of the lotion plus they make it smell goodjust be sure to use therapeutic quality oils like Young Livings.

You can get fancy and mix things up. I like to give shea butter lotion as a gift. Piping the lotion takes the presentation up a notch.

Put the whipped lotion in your pastry bag, and attach your favorite tip. Pipe the lotion into your container.

You can also mix up the 2nd oil you use. Grapeseed oil is only a suggestion it’s what I use. Some other options are coconut oil, jobaba oil, sweet almond oil, or avocado oil.

Make sure youre using a hexane-free oil. To save a buck, manufacturers use a petroleum byproduct called hexane to extract the oil from the plant. Instead of taking the time to press the oil out.

You can adjust the amount of the 2nd oil you add too.

Add more oil for a softer lotion. Experiment with 1/2 tablespoon more at a time. If you add too much oil, it will be greasier.

Add less oil for a harder lotion. In the summer I choose to make my DIY shea butter lotion with only shea butter. With the winter cold, I need the 2nd liquid oil to make it soft enough to use.

And if you mess up and the lotion seems too soft add ½ teaspoon of cornstarch to firm it up. Or more melted shea butter. Only do this if youre still in the whipping process.

You can repurpose old baby food jars to give shea butter lotion as gifts. I spray paint the lids with a silver metallic paint. They are the perfect size for gifts and free is always a win!

Below are some of my favorite essential oils to use in this homemade body butter recipe:

This whipped homemade body butter is versatile! Add different essential oils to each batch. Essential oils are natural and much healthier than using synthetic fragrances.

  • Peppermint . Youll smell like a candy cane! Great for the holidays
  • Frankincense& Lavender , this mix promotes beautiful skin!
  • Vanilla& Lavender , this mix is very relaxing!
  • Grapefruit& Lime . This smells AMAZING!! Just be careful not to wear this outside since citrus oils are photosensitive. Other citrus oils like wild orange and lemon are wonderful too!

Help My Body Butter Is Melting

Once again, this is the nature of a 100% oil-based product: If it gets too warm, it will probably melt .

If you live somewhere very warm or its the height of summer, you might want to store your whipped body butter in the fridge.

If your body butter is still quite melty or soft even in cooler temps, you may want to try reducing the amount of shea butter by half and instead use 1/4 cup shea butter and 1/4 cup cocoa butter. The cocoa butter is harder than the shea butter, so it will help to keep it more solid.

Shea Butter Solid Perfume

This warm and sweet sandalwood vanilla DIY solid perfume has an anxiety-easing aroma. Sandalwood essential oil is known for its naturally calming effects . And instead of alcohol or otherscary ingredients, this recipe uses light almond oil and the ever-silky shea butter.

So instead of drying and irritating your skin, it moisturizes and soothes, all while making you smell delightful. Toss it in your purse to enjoy whenever youd like!

Once youve added your essential oils and mixed all ingredients together well, transfer to a mixing bowl and chill in the refrigerator overnight.

* If you dont have time to leave it in the fridge overnight, you can pop it in the freezer for an hour or two and it should be solid enough to whip up.

After your body butter has chilled and solidified, use a hand beater to whip it into a silky butter.

You could also use a stand mixer fitted with the whip attachment if you like.

Transfer to a storage jar , then pop the lid on, add a pretty label and youre done!

How To Make A Homemade Shea Butter Lotion Recipe Less Greasy

When it comes to making body butter than is lighter and less greasy, there are two main things I recommend.

The first is to use lighter oil. I use safflower oil in my body butters because it is quickly absorbed into the skin. You could also use rosehip oil or grapeseed oil.

I recommend you stay away from heavier richer oils. This includes coconut oil, olive oil and palm oil. While you can switch out safflower oil in my recipe below to make a homemade lotion with coconut oil and shea butter, I do not recommend this. Of course, everyones preferences are different, but it will make for greasier body butter.

The other thing I recommend is adding arrowroot powder to your body butter. While you can make body butter without it, it can help absorb excess oil. So can tapioca powder or cornstarch. I find it makes a noticeable different to how greasy my body butters feel and it also has some benefits of its own. More about that below.

Top Tips For This Body Butter

  • Dont worry if your your skin feels greasy once you put the butter on, your skin will absorb it and it will be less greasy
  • Store in a mason jar, in a cold dark place, lasts around 6 months
  • Shea butter especially can vary in texture and color depending on the brand, but they will all work well
  • Using a spoon or spatula to dip rather than your fingers will extend the life of the body butter.

First, you need to weigh out your hard, solid ingredients.

Chop it up in to smaller pieces and place into a small pot to melt.

Be sure to heat on very low heat, stirring constantly.Take it off the heat when you still have a few solid pieces floating around. You dont want this to get too hot, and they will melt from the heat.

Place it into the refrigerator and cool until it has thickened some.Be sure you dont leave it so long that it gets too thickened and hardened. You basically want it somewhat thickened and no longer hot to the touch.

While thats cooling, measure your soft butter ingredients.

Place them in the mixing bowl and whip them up.

I used unrefined, raw butters. They do have a smell so if you want to be able to add your own scent then be sure to purchase refined, deodorized butters instead.I like the natural smell and less processing is always better. Cocoa Butter smells like chocolate. Yum.Shea Butter smells similar but has sort of a nutty smell. So, Id say a nutty chocolate-ish scent. With all that said, I do use the unrefined butters sometimes.

Once that is done, slowly pour the melted oils into the creamed soft butters very slowly, while beating.I used my Kitchen Aid Mixer with the whip attachment.

Whip it, whip it good.Hasorry, couldnt resist! Now that song is stuck in your head, right? )

Do you see how whippy it got? Isnt that the neatest thing?

So smooth and creamy.

Both are nice and easy to scoop out of.

Homemade Shea Butter Lotion Vs Diy Shea Butter Body Butter

First of all, what is a lotion vs a body butter?

Whilst these terms are used somewhat interchangeably at times, they can also mean different things.

Lotions are generally made with water, oil and an emulsifier whereas a body butter is a mixture of just butter and an oil thats whipped to make it fluffy. Sometimes body butters are referred to as lotion , but you wouldnt call a lotion a body butter unless it was.

When I first looked into making a moisturizer with shea butter, I was thinking about making something thinner and more lotion-like than a body butter. However, two things happened to change my mind.

Firstly, body lotion is generally 70-80% water. The problem with this is that it means your lotion can become moldy unless you use a preservative. Its not good to keep your DIY beauty products containing water at room temperature without a good preservative.

Since going chemical-free is important to me, finding a preservative that was natural and effective soon made my mind explode. I then looked for alternatives.

I had initially discarded the idea of making body butter because I felt it would feel greasy. However, I changed my mind after I read more and started experimenting. In fact, if you make my shea butter body cream recipe below, I think you are going to be surprised by how thin and lotion-like it is. It isnt thick and heavy like I imagined body butters.
