How To Convert Splenda To Sugar In Recipes

Because Splenda is heat-stable, it won’t lose sweetness when it’s cooked or baked, Danielle Gaffen, RDN, says. “For this reason, Splenda is widely regarded as the best alternative sweetener when it comes to baking and cooking.”

But because Splenda is so much sweeter than sugar, you can’t do a simple swap of sugar for Splenda that is, you’ll likely need less Splenda than the amount of sugar your recipe calls for. Plus, the conversion may differ from one of Splenda’s products to another.

The chart below will help you convert your recipe so you can swap out sugar for Splenda:

Amount of Sugar

How To Make Splenda Brn Sugar Oatmeal Cookies

Splenda 1 lb. Brown Sugar and Splenda Blend
  • 1In a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, egg and vanilla until smooth. In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt together. Stir this into the butter/sugar mixture. Stir in the oats, raisins and walnuts, if using them.
  • 2At this point you can either chill the dough for a bit in the fridge and then scoop it, or scoop the cookies onto a sheet and then chill the whole tray before baking them. You could also bake them right away, if youre impatient, but I do find that they end up slighly less thick.
  • 3The cookies should be two inches apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake them for 10 to 12 minutes , taking them out when golden at the edges but still a little undercooked-looking on top. Let them sit on the hot baking sheet for five minutes before transferring them to a rack to cool.
  • 4I have recently made these and added crunchy peanut butter instead of the other nuts and we loved it =) Try just adding some peanut butter to a cookie or two when you bake them just to see if you will like them thats what I did then added to the whole batter.

Is It Safe To Bake With Splenda

Put simply, eating too much refined sugar is linked to weight gain and increased risk of heart disease and cavities, per the Mayo Clinic. So there’s ample reason to seek out sugar substitutes such as Splenda they allow you to have something sweet without the calories accompanying sugar.

Splenda was approved for use in food in 1998, after review of many health studies, per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration . Sucralose is “generally recognized as safe,” per the FDA. It’s “unlikely” that this artificial sweetener can cause cancer in people, per an October 2019 meta-analysis in Food and Chemical Toxicology.

However, many believe more information is needed to fill in a full picture of Splenda’s safety and any potential health risks. In a glossary of food additives from the Center for Science in the Public Interest , Splenda gets a red X, which indicates that CSPI believes it is unsafe or so poorly tested that eating it isn’t with the risk.

“More research is definitely needed to determine the safety of sucralose,” Gaffen tells LIVESTRONG.com.

That said, because Splenda is so much sweeter than table sugar, you’ll need less of it that means you’ll consume fewer calories, per the Mayo Clinic. And, it “won’t have an effect on blood sugar levels, which can be helpful for people with diabetes,” Gaffen says. Artificial sweeteners are generally considered “free foods” for people with diabetes, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Tip

Think About Your Drink

Sweet Potato Casserole | Made with Splenda Brown Sugar Blend

Drinks can be a major source of hidden calories and sugars in the diet. Thats because they dont feel as filling as food, so you may not realize how many calories and sugars youre actually getting. For example, a regular 12-ounce cola contains around 140 calories and 40 grams of added sugars! That is more added sugar than a person should have in an entire day! The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugars to no more than 24 grams per day for most women and 36 grams per day for most men.1

Instead of sweetening your holiday tea or coffee with sugar, use Splenda Sweetener Packets or Splenda Sweetener Liquids. And if you like cream in your coffee, check out our Splenda Coffee Creamers, which come in three delicious flavors: French Vanilla, Sweet Cream, and Hazelnut. If you enjoy drinking water with your meal but want some flavor, try using Splenda Liquid Water Enhancers. If youre feeling adventurous and want to make a fun holiday drink from scratch, check out our drink recipes. This Peppermint Mocha and this French Vanilla Eggnog are perfect for the season!

Magical Peanut Butter Cookies

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a large baking sheet. In a mixing bowl, combine the peanut butter, 1 cup sugar replacement, the egg, and vanilla, and stir well with a spoon. Roll the dough into balls the size of walnuts. Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet. With a fork, dipped in sugar replacement to prevent sticking, press a crisscross design on each cookie. Bake for 12 minutes, remove from the oven, and sprinkle the cookies with some of the remaining sugar replacement. Cool slightly before removing from pan.Continue reading > >

Can You Freeze Sweet Potato Casserole

If youre freezing the casserole in advance, youll either want to thaw first and cook as directed OR you can bake from frozen, just make sure the internal temperature is a minimum of 165 degrees. I havent tried it from frozen, but I would suggest baking covered in aluminum foil so that the topping doesnt burn.

The holidays tend to be a very sweet time of year, which is hard for those of us watching our sugar consumption. Im happy that alternatives now exist so we can still enjoy our favorite dishes.

Did you know that the average American woman eats 3x the recommended daily amount of sugar? And thats just on an average day, not even counting the sugar-binge holiday foods! Can you imagine eating 22 teaspoons of added sugar a day? Chances are that most women do!

And dont even get me started on all the calories in all that extra sugar. Did you know that swapping 1 cup of sugar for SPLENDA® can save 600 calories?!

The other nice part about using SPLENDA® in place of sugar is that you actually use LESS. A general rule of thumb is about half the amount that you would use for sugar, but always check the handy conversion chart on the package to be sure.

Baking Banana Bread With Splenda

Splenda Sweetener Brown Sugar Blend

I tried making a sort of sugar free banana bread using all SPLENDA on one occasion and another time using the SPLENDA Sugar Blend.

I really enjoyed both sweet breads, but I think will use the blend in future recipes. It was delicious! And yes, I will share.

You can also make this recipe with regular sugar but when Im looking to cut back, my favorite of the three options is the Splenda sugar blend.

Splenda recipes with the sugar blend arent quite sugar free banana bread, but its definitely a good start if you want to cut out sugar in small ways.

And what is super fun for me is baking with my kids. Baking banana bread is a great way to get young kids in the kitchen because there are lots of easy ways to get them involved.

My sons love peeling and mashing the bananas, cracking the eggs and even measuring and pouring the dry ingredients.

When my oldest son was in 2nd grade, he even wrote a report on how to make banana bread! I guess you could say its a family affair. You can prep in less than 20 minutes and then all you have to do is let it bake.

How To Make Low Carb Sweet Potato Casserole:

Ever since being diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic last year, I have done my best to minimize my sugar and carbohydrate intake as much as possible.

My husband and I went extremely low-carb on an LCHF diet, but have since started to reintroduce SOME starches to our diet while still minimizing sugar and bread.

Holidays are hard when youre watching your sugar, but I recently discovered SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend at Walmart and I was SO excited to be able to enjoy one of my favorite holiday dishes: Sweet potato casserole!

I never did like sweet potatoes growing up. That was because my family either doused them in syrup, or topped them with marshmallows. All too sweet for my liking! Then I was introduced to this amazing sweet potato casserole, and to be totally honest, things were never the same after.

Now every single year, Im requested to bring a double batch of this delish casserole. This year, I decided to give the SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend a try, and modify this recipe to be lower in sugar and gluten-free!

Possibly my favorite part about this dish is that it can be made in advance. Youll notice in my photos it has not been cooked. I made this ahead of time for Thanksgiving and popped it in the freezer. Now on Thanksgiving day I can pop it right in the oven and its one less thing to stress over!

Oh and if its not Thanksgiving, you can always serve it with this delicious beef cross rib roast for an incredible meal!

This dish goes fabulously with your Christmas ham too!

December 16, 2014 By Sippy Cup Mom

This post is part of the SPLENDA® 365 SWEET SWAPS Blogger Program by McNeil Nutritionals, LLC and The Motherhood, who sent me products and compensated me for my time. Opinions, experiences and photos shared here are my own, and I hope you enjoy them.

Last year, my Mom was diagnosed with diabetes. It was hard for her, especially because she has such a sweet tooth, but shes cut out all sugar from her diet. Her health has drastically gotten better and over the summer, I decided that I wanted to cut sugar from my diet too. Once you start being aware of what youre eating, youd be surprised how much sugar is in everything you eat! After all, the average American consumes more than 22 teaspoons of added sugar a day. Thats more than TRIPLE the recommended amount for women and more than DOUBLE the recommended amount for men!

During this time of year, it can be hard not to indulge in all the sugar-laden treats that are all around us. It sometimes seems that during the month of December, its all about SUGAR! Thats why I decided to make the perfect treat that both my Mom and I can enjoy and that my husband and kids loved too that has less added sugar AND calories!
