How To Use Neem Oil As Mosquito Repellent

As we already mentioned, neem oil’s smell is strong. Moreover, neem oil can be aggressive on sensitive skin. That is why it is always recommended to dilute neem oil in a carrier oil before applying on skin.

The best oil to mix with neem oil to repel mosquitoes is coconut oil. Studies have shown best results when the two are combined, probably because coconut oil is also a mild insect repellent. Apart from that, pleasant smelling oils such as peppermint are often added to neem oil insect repellents.

When using neem oil as mosquito repellent, never mix it with water or other liquids, unless you use it immediately. Neem oil looses its properties when mixed with water in less than 24 hours.

Neem oil is not effective in repelling mosquitoes for as long as DEET, that is why you should apply neem oil to your skin every two hours to effectively repel mosquitoes.

For best results, it is advisable to start applying neem oil on skin 10 days before exposure to mosquitoes, that way your skin will develop a strong unpleasantness for the little insects.

Other measures you should take, in combination with using neem oil as mosquito repellent are:

  • Apply neem oil to your clothes too
  • Do not wear dark colors
  • Avoid going out at dawn and dusk
  • Avoid clothes that make you sweat
  • You can mix a small amount of DEET in the mixture

How Neem Oil Works

Unlike some chemical insecticides, neem oil doesnt kill pests right away when you apply it because it doesnt work on contact. Instead, when applied, neem oil creates a hostile environment for reproduction and, over time, depletes the population.

The oil enters the insects and interferes with their reproductive system. Furthermore, the oily coating on the leaves impacts the viability of eggs. The environment becomes toxic to the pests, and after a few generations of low birth rates, the population collapses.

Typically, growers apply neem oil to plants in a diluted form as a foliar spray. Its worth noting that many neem oil products give users instructions to dilute the spray with water only. However, this is not good advice!

Oil doesnt dissolve well in water. To spray your plants with neem oil, the oil needs to break down so that it mixes with water and forms an emulsion. Some growers suggest adding a few drops of liquid soap to the water before you add the recommended neem oil amount.

Although this may work, its probably best to look for special insecticidal soap to create your neem and water solution.

Can Neem Oil Be Used As A Soil Drench

Yes, Neem oil is a systemic pesticide that works effectively in controlling sucking or piercing bugs when used as a soil drench. When diluted Neem oil is poured at the base of the plant, Neem oil is sucked up by the plant roots and enters into the plants vascular system. If any sucking or piercing insects like an aphid, mealybug, or squash bug bites into the plants tissue or leaves, Azadirachtin enters the bugs body. It reacts to the bugs feeding, reproductive and growth hormones, eventually killing the insect.

Why Is Neem Oil Beneficial In The Garden

In the 1970s, Neem oil became available in the western world and scientists began exploring its properties and the neem oil uses for plants.

They found that the oil, while a powerful deterrent to unwanted insects, has very low toxicity for humans and animals.

Although Neem oil is most useful as a natural insecticide against soft-bodied larval pests, it can also interfere with feeding activities of bigger, tougher pests such as beetles.

It also works by reducing the levels of Ecdysone . This disrupts the pests molting process and prevents larvae from developing into adult insects.

For this reason, you will sometimes see deformed and crippled insect pest limping about after Neem treatment.

Alternately, immature insects may merely fail to mature and die as nymphs or larvae.

Soft bodied larvae are killed on contact with Neem oil spray.

While many adult insects can survive direct contact with the spray, it may interfere with mating activities.

When used as a garden spray or soil drench, Neem oil does not have long-lasting residual effects.

The neem extract degrades reasonably quickly when exposed to both rainfall and sunlight.

Its insect repelling and killing effects are fast acting for soft-bodied pest insects.

The fact it dissipates quickly means it poses little or no risk to beneficial insects, birds, reptiles, and mammals.

Neem Oil Uses For Plants

Neem oil wont kill all of the bugs on contact, so it might take a few days, weeks, or even months for them to disappear from the plant.

The best part is that it only kills the ones that eat plants, so it wont harm beneficial insects! This is huge, especially if you plan to spray it on plants that are outside, or you want to use it in your garden.

Just be careful when you use it outside to make sure that you dont spray it directly on any beneficial bugs, because it could still smother them on contact.

Its also safe to use indoors, and I mainly use neem oil for houseplants since battling infestations can be a common occurrence during the long winter months.

It has helped me get rid of all of the houseplant pests Ive ever dealt with, and also keeps them bug free for the long run!
