The Pizza Bloody Mary At Homeslice Chicago

Red Lobster’s new bloody mary is topped with a lobster claw

While we don’t necessarily think of pizza parlors as standard brunch destinations, this quirky Chicago pie slinger is actually a brilliant option for anyone whose go-to fast breaker is a leftover, refrigerated slice. And truly, there’s no better hangover cure than a spicy, tomato-rich Bloody, crowned with a chilled triangle of Hawaiian-style ‘za although the accompanying Miller High Life pony might just jump-start a new buzz.

The Hail Mary At Star Bar Austin

Taking the “everything’s bigger in Texas” motto to heart, Star Bar proudly proffers this veritable kitchen sink of a drink if you can even call it that. You’ll need to plow your way through a cheeseburger, chicken nuggets, cheddar smoked cocktail sausages, cubes of cheddar and pepper Jack cheeses, hard-boiled eggs, pickled okra, dill pickles and gherkins, cherry tomatoes and celery, as well as powdered mini doughnuts and a full-sized honey bun, before you get to anything that can be consumed with a straw.

The Barn Yard Bloody Mary At Farmer’s Table La Mesa California

While largely an ode to refined, farm-to-table cuisine, this Cali eatery has tongue-in-cheek fun with its theme during brunch, when five wacky Bloody Marys are on offer. The Peter Rabbit and the Butcher’s Block set the stage in a comparatively sedate way, but the showstopper is the $45 Barn Yard, a cornucopia of bacon-wrapped shrimp, fresh mozzarella, seasonal vegetables and a whole roasted chicken, meant to satisfy four thirsty farmhands.

And with chipotle barbecue seasoning around the rim, its salty and spicy enough to keep you thirsty for the entire drink.

Now, sadly, we cant go out for a meal at Red Lobster these days . But, we can make one at home that might even be a little better. And if youre serving this on date night, you can still get Red Lobster delivered once youre done with this appetizer/drink combo.

Here in Canada, people usually make Bloody Caesars instead of Bloody Marys, and I have to say that this cocktail could use clamato juice instead of tomato juice, so feel free to substitute if you can get your hands on that delicious nectar. But its not a deal breaker, ladies.

Why Is It Called A Bloody Mary

No one is quite sure how the cocktail got its gory name, but there are various theories. One legend says the cocktail was named after Queen Mary Tudor and her bloody reign over England. The red tomato juice is meant to signify the blood shed of the Protestants in the 16th century.

However, yet another story claims that the Bloody Mary was named after entertainer George Jessel’s friend Mary Geraghty.

How To Make Your Own Take On This Lobster Bloody Mary

First, were going to need to get our hands on a lobster claw. For me, it was easy because we have a huge oversupply of lobster here in Canada due to restricted exporting, and the seafood counter that I work at just happens to be in the middle of the best sale on live lobster Ive seen in my three years working there. So goody for me, I was able to get a full lobster for less than $10.

Then theres the Cheddar Bay Biscuit. Red Lobster sells a mix for them in grocery stores, but unfortunately my store was out of stock at the time. So thats too bad for me, but I can survive without a biscuit in this drink.

The lobster and shrimp can be quickly steamed or boiled in nice salty water, just make sure youre not overcooking them because it makes them rubbery. A 1 1/2 pound lobster will generally take about 10 minutes to boil or 13 minutes to steam, adding 3 minutes for each additional pound. But go for the smaller sized lobsters if you can, under 2 pounds preferably, because they have the best flavor and lightest texture.

Making your Bloody Mary:
  • 1 lobster claw, cooked and chilled
  • 1 jumbo shrimp, cooked and chilled
  • 1 lime wedge

Method

Cook the lobster and shrimp, and chill until ready to make the cocktail.

Famously Peculiar Tomato Drink Has A Million Faces

Red Lobster

The Bloody Mary seems to be the one cocktail that welcomes a wide range of improvisation with strong flavors, providing they are balanced. A few dashes of hot sauce? Yes please. Bacon? Absolutely. A lobster claw? Now were talking. This peculiar drink of unknown origin has somehow prospered throughout the 20th century and up to today, to the point where one can hardly endure the drudgery of brunch without one. Perhaps its due to the awakening jolt of robust at times caustic vegetal and spicy flavors, but undoubtedly, the Bloody Mary would be nothing without the tomato.

Built in three parts with no shaking, this Bloody Mary has equal parts vodka and house spice mixture, with a large helping of tomato juice to top it off. Though kept a secret, the house mix of accent ingredients, cooked up by proprietor Robert Levitt, likely includes a blend of salt, celery salt, coarse black pepper, horseradish, a hot sauce such as Tabasco and perhaps a little pickle or olive juice. No Worcestershire, unlike some traditional recipes. The spirit seems to be the only thing that doesnt have any flavor, and for good reason in this case.

Lobster Claw Bloody Mary

When we read that Red Lobster was offering this unique, seasonal appetizer/cocktail for a limited time, we knew we had to try it. Its my habit to check Brand Eating once a month or so to see whats new, look for limited-time specials and so on. Its also a good way to keep up with the alt-meat market. Thats where we learned about this seasonal offering.

The appetizer-cocktail is made from Titos Handmade Vodka and the house bloody Mary mix, rimmed with spicy chipotle BBQ seasoning, topped with a chilled Maine lobster claw, jumbo shrimp and their Cheddar Bay Biscuit.

We like the idea of a corn vodka and Titos is smooth, but we dont drink it on its own for precisely that reason Titos is too smooth. That makes it great for mixing cocktails, but we prefer a bit of taste, and bite. This puts us firmly in the minority on Titos, but there it is.

This being January, we havent eaten seafood much since our trip to New Orleans. The lobster and shrimp are as expected for this place: fresh, generously proportioned. After digging in and sampling everything as served, we sprinkled some Old Bay everywhere. Good idea. The Lobster Claw Bloody Mary has been available at Red Lobsters nationwide since New Years Day, but only through February 2.

Dont judge us too harshly for freely admitting that we liked this fish-in-a-drink . What other cocktail-appetizer combinations are possible, we wonder? Something to think about.
