  • Gluten affects all people differently, but research has found that gluten have an inflammatory response in 6 out of 10 women.
  • Dairy is the second most common food sensitivity next to gluten. The inflammatory part of dairy is a protein called A1 casein and is inflammatory because it stimulates your immune system to create those inflammatory messengers.
  • Vegetable oils contain Omega-6 and in large amounts, it can promote inflammation. It’s in direct opposition with omega-3, which is anti-inflammatory. Great oils to cook with instead include olive oil, avocado oil and coconut oil.

    What Is Chronic Inflammation

Youve probably heard this term before but you may not understand how inflammation is related to food and the way you feel day-to-day.

When you think of inflammation, you probably think of the pain and redness that occurs in your skin because of a rash. Its your bodys immune response to protect itself from something harmful. Acute inflammation is great at protecting our bodies, but chronic inflammation in the body is not so great.

Chronic inflammation means our bodies are constantly inflamed inside and essentially attacking ourselves from the inside out. Depending on your body, it can show up in a host of different ways including digestive issues, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, allergies, period problems and more.

Do Nurture The Good Bacteria In Your Gut

A healthy gut creates a protective barrier in the intestines, allowing nutrients to pass into the bloodstream but preventing many inflammatory compounds in food from doing so. When these good bacteria are disrupted or become unbalanced, this barrier isn’t as effective, leaking inflammatory compounds into the body. Strengthening gut health is key for reducing inflammation, so incorporate probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut, kombucha, miso or kimchi on a regular basis to repopulate strains your gut may need. Also, don’t forget to take care of existing good bacteria by incorporating fiber-rich prebiotic foods.

In My Quest To Understand Nutritional Sources Of Inflammation I Spoke With Registered Dietitian Kristen Brogan Of Wellness Platform On Target Living

    Anti

The point of an anti-inflammatory eating pattern is not to lose weight, so it’s not really a “diet” in the conventional use of that term. According to Brogan, an anti-inflammatory eating pattern includes foods that can naturally lower inflammatory markers in the body. In plainer words, an anti-inflammatory diet is simply one that won’t make your body fire off an immune response.

“Foods arent inflammatory markers per se, but can indirectly raise inflammatory markers in the body,” explained Brogan. Examples of foods that can indirectly raise markers include sugar, which can increase inflammation in the body because of the excess fructose that accumulates and causes an imbalance in insulin and blood glucose. Other ingredients shown to “increase inflammatory markers” include trans fats, an excess of vegetable oils, processed animal proteins, and alcohol these should be consumed in moderation.

Food Sensitivity Tests For Your Body:

We know gluten and dairy are the most common food sensitivities, but you can also have food sensitivities specific to your body. It’s important to know how your body specifically reacts to foods because we’re each unique. A food sensitivity occurs when a food upsets your gut bacteria and inflames your gut lining, causing your immune system to make those inflammatory messengers.

I took an EverlyWell food sensitivity test back in January and found three major foods were extremely inflammatory for my body: almonds, eggs and egg whites. I removed those three foods from my diet and found my anxiety decreased, acne was reduced, gut and IBS nearly healed and much more.

There are two great things about knowing what food sensitivities you have. The first is that knowledge is power. Once you know, you can simply eliminate or reduce that food to decrease inflammation. The second is that you can reverse food sensitivities once you know what they are??

To reverse food sensitivities: Get a test done, avoid highly sensitive foods, rebuild your gut flora through a probiotic supplement and fermented foods and eat gut-healing supplements like bone broth and glutamine.

After doing all of the above for 10 months I took another food sensitivity test and was SO EXCITED to see that all three of my high sensitivities were lowered.

Note: I was given another food sensitivity test by EverlyWell for this post. It is not sponsored and all opinions are my own.

Herb Roast Chicken With Root Vegetables

“Everyone is always looking for an anti-inflammatory chicken meal and the real superstars of this recipe are the spices and the vegetables,” say The Nutrition Twins. “Rosemary contains rosmarinic acid, a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties that have been shown to boost the immune system and improve circulation while also neutralize damaging free radicals.”

“The lemons’ antioxidant, vitamin C, fights against harmful free radicals while the potent antioxidant, beta carotene, found in the carrots, becomes even more powerful as they are cooked. Both the onions and garlic also fight against inflammation.”

“If you can choose yellow or purple potatoes for this recipe, they’ll be just as delicious and offer even more anti-inflammatory benefits than white potatoes.”

“One other secret to keeping this recipe as anti-inflammatory as possible is to eat the lean chicken breast, rather than the skin and fattier cuts of the bird which contain pro-inflammatory saturated fat.”
