Happy New Year Friends! We celebrated the new year with a quiet night in. It was too cold to even bother to venture out anyway, wind chills around -30 made staying home a much more appealing option! We welcomed 2018 with pizza, Netflix and a bottle of bubbly and it was just what we needed.

While everyone else is tackling the Whole 30 or a sugar-free month, my goal for the year is to just do more of the things that make me happy. Life is too darn short to keep doing things that just dont bring you joy. So, heres to a year of more of the things we all need right now family, friends, love, laughter, adventure, happiness, good food and cocktails.

Speaking of cocktails! I made you a B& H version of one of my favorite classic cocktails, the Old Fashioned. The classic version is super simple, just a sugar cube, bitters, whiskey and water and yes, its a classic for a reason. Its simple and oh so perfectly balanced, especially when using the best ingredients you can get your hands on.

Does Hot Tea And Honey Help A Cough

Honey has been studied for an old fashioned cough syrup recipe for children. In a study, honey relieved cough symptoms better than no treatment or diphenhydramine, and it was the same effectiveness as using dextromethorphan

Drinking hot tea in a hot toddy recipe for cough can temporarily relieve cough symptoms because it opens airways due to the steam.

Franks Honeyed Old Fashioned

Heres a sweet take on a traditional cocktail. The Old Fashioned has really lived up to its name, as its been around since 1880! However, for a sweet twist, replace the muddling sugar and/or simple syrup with 100% pure, raw, natural Franks Honey.

RECIPE:

  • 2 oz of your favorite whiskey, bourbon, or rye.
  • 1 tablespoon of Franks Honey
  • 2-4 dashes of Angostura Bitters
  • 1 slice of orange

Pour the Franks Honey into a rocks glass. Next add the whiskey. Since the honey is so thick, you will need to stir the honey and whiskey until the honey is thoroughly dissolved. Stir until your drink is clear. Next, add a few dashes of bitters. Dont overdo it with the bitters or you will overpower the flavors of the honey. Finally, add ice and garnish with a fresh slice of orange.

Can Whiskey Help A Cough

While there are no studies answering can whiskey help a cough, many people swear by it. Personally, I’ve been sick and whiskey was the only thing that gave me relief.

When you drink alcohol, it dilates your blood vessels. This makes it act like a natural decongestant. Further, the steam from a hot drink also acts like a decongestant, which is why I usually make a hot toddy recipe for cough.

Drinking alcohol also works like a sedative. It slows down your breathing and heart rate slightly, which can reduce coughing.

Whiskey can also help you feel calmer. If you’re stressed from being sick, it can help you get some temporary relief.

Old Fashioned With American Honey

I had a drink at a restaurant the other night that they called “The Fall Fashioned.” It was an Old Fashioned made with American Honey, Makers Mark, Muddled Orange, Pomegranate and Bitters. Has anyone heard of something like this before? I’ve been trying to replicate it with limited success but it was one of the best drinks I’ve ever had the pleasure of drinking.

Whats In An Old Fashioned Cocktail

Ive written more about the history and composition of a basic old fashioned here, How to Make a Perfect Old Fashioned. And its a fun cocktail to make variations of simply because each flavor element contributes so much to the cocktail.

    Bourbon Old Fashioned Ingredients:

Its a fairly simple cocktail to make and is easily adapted to your personal tastes. With such a short ingredient list the variations on this basic formula are almost endless!

    • Bourbon or rye whisky: for this cocktail, I like using a Kentucky Straight Bourbon and have used both Woodford Reserve or Elijah Craig. Ive also made it with Rittenhouse Rye and loved that as well. The rye version is definitely stronger and has a bit more bite, but its definitely a variation you should try!
    • Triple sec or Cointreau OPTIONAL but its an absolutely delicious addition.
    • Sugar cube I substituted Orange blossom honey which gives the drink a smoother texture and flavor.
    • Orange bitters Regans is my favorite, but use whatever Orange bitters you have. Dont have orange bitters? Peychauds and Angostura are both used in this drink, so feel free to substitute!
    • Ice

In cocktails with such a short ingredient list, the quality of the ingredients makes a huge difference! Choose a high-quality bourbon or rye. Looking for the best bourbon for an Old Fashioned cocktail? check out this Huffington Post article!

    Old Fashioned Soft Honey Cookies

    September 25, 2018 By Katie

    Old Fashioned Soft Honey Cookies.

This recipe makes an old fashioned style honey sugar cookie. I just received a jar of fresh raw honey from someone who is a beekeeper and I have been trying to come up with new recipes to use it in ever since. I really like this recipe. I have never made cookies with honey before and I think the honey adds a good flavor and texture to the cookies. This recipe would also be good with chocolate chips added.

Recipe makes 24-48 cookies depending on what size you make them. I like to make big cookies and used a 2.5 Tablespoon cookie scoop to make these. When I want smaller cookies I use a cookie scoop that is just over 1 Tablespoon.

    • 1 cup salted softened butter
    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • 3½ cups all purpose flour
    • 1½ teaspoons baking soda
  • Preheat oven to 350 F. degrees. Grease cookie sheets.
  • Cream butter and sugar together either by hand or with a mixer. Mix in eggs, vanilla, & honey.
  • Add flour & baking soda & mix well.
  • Drop by the heaping tablespoon full onto cookie sheets.
  • Bake 10-12 minutes until they are just starting to turn golden brown.

Combining Honey And Rose In The Old Fashioned Cocktail

In this old fashioned, I use a rose tea-honey simple syrup to sweeten the old fashioned. To pair with that floral note from the rose, I used apple bitters which are bright, but have a flair of the bitter around them. Theyre not strong in adding a lot of direct apple flavor to the cocktail, but they do add more brightness and lightness to the cocktail.

To make the rose-honey simple, I made a rose tea and while it was warm, added it to honey, just as you would make a normal honey syrup. Id had dried rose-buds left over from a dry vermouth infusion last year, and since rose buds keep so well, I still have plenty of left for infusions and teas.

I wanted to round out the garnish with something traditional, so I used a long peel of orange to make an orange rose and dropped a couple of the more intact rose buds inside. With each sip you get the aroma of orange peel and rose as you bring the glass toward your mouth.

Its a simple cocktail, and the rose-honey simple will combine well with sours whiskey or gin, added to highballs and spritzes and will brighten up any champagne cocktail you have for brunch. Just try adding it to your next mimosa. You can thank me in the comments.

So What Exactly Is An Old Fashioned

An American classic, the Old Fashioned is considered the gold standard of cocktails. Traditionally, the Old Fashioned is made with whisky , sugar and bitters. The cocktail is stirred and served over fresh ice in a rocks glass with an orange twist garnish.

Fun Fact: Originally the Old Fashioned cocktail was made with gin which doesnt sound very appealing! Happily, in about 1880, Holland gin was replaced with bourbon and the Old Fashioned Cocktail has remained pretty much unchanged since then.

What Are Bitters And Is There A Substitute

Bitters give cocktails a more complex flavor profile. They are potent, so you always want to use just a little bit. Although there are different varieties of bitters, most have a spicy, herb-like taste.

If you run out, theres not much you can do to mimic that flavor.

While bitters do contain alcohol, most of the time they are not marketed that way because recipes use so little of it.

    Whiskey And Honey For Cough

OLD-FASHIONED HONEY CAKE RECIPE – “Medena Torta”

When you can’t stop coughing, you’ll do just about anything for relief. I’ve tried over the counter medications, prescription medications, and a cough remedy with whiskey.

I’m not much of a drinker, and I definitely prefer a White Claw over the hard stuff, but a whiskey cough syrup works better than anything else for me.

This whiskey honey lemon cold remedy, hot toddy recipe for cough, and peppermint cough syrup recipes are easy to make, and they are shelf stable.

Before we get to the whiskey cold remedy recipes, each of these old fashioned cough syrup recipes is for adults 21 and older. Do not give them to children.

Although it’s a small amount of whiskey, be responsible. Do not drive or otherwise operate any heavy machinery after you take a dose.

    Old Fashioned Nutrition Facts

This is the best Old Fashioned recipe of all time! This Old Fashioned recipe mix whiskey, sugar, bitters, and wateris quite literally the classic cocktail that started it all. It was that particular Old Fashioned recipe that appeared alongside the first-ever printed use of the word cocktail way back in 1806. Since those sepia-toned days, the Old Fashioned has enjoyed illustrious comebacks as new generations of boozers have fallen for its simple charm. Old Fashioned is a light, refreshing tasting, yet complex combination of Bulleit Bourbon, sugar and bitters. The Old Fashioned is also one of six basic drinks listed in David A. Embury’s The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks. The first use of the name “Old Fashioned” for a Bourbon whiskey cocktail was said to have been at the Pendennis Club, a gentlemen’s club founded in 1881 in Louisville, Kentucky. These Old Fashioned cocktail recipes are literally for cocktails done the old-fashioned way. The differences of the Old Fashioned cocktail recipes from the cocktail recipes of the late 19th Century are mainly preparation method, the use of sugar and water in lieu of simple or gomme syrup, and the absence of additional liqueurs.

The beauty of the Old Fashioned recipe is that nearly any spirit can be used as the core as long as the other ingredients support and accent that spirit.

    Old Fashioned Recipe Tips

The best bourbon for an Old Fashioned is a highly personal decision. The classic Old Fashioned cocktail features little more than whiskey, sugar, and bitters. Start by using good bourbon, the rule being that if you wouldnt sip it by itself it has no place at the helm of a Old Fashioned recipe. There are other whiskey drinks for masking subpar boozethis isnt one of them. From there, the cocktail-minded seem to break into two camps: simple syrup or muddled sugar. While a barspoon of syrup can cut your prep time in half, it robs the drink of some of the weight and texture that makes it so appealing. You do not have to hurry. The Old Fashioned recipe isnt going anywhere. The Old Fashioned is one of six root cocktails upon which all mixology is built, according to the Cocktail Codex, a book from the legendary Death & Co bar team. That doesn’t mean you can’t get funky with it. Swap your bourbon or rye for rum or mezcalor both, like this recipe calls for. Gin is another option. For those less inclined to live on the edge, an Irish whiskey Old Fashioned could do the trick. If you want a more intense orange flavor for this Old Fashioned recipe, use orange bitters, or muddle 2 thin orange wedges with the sugar, then strain into a rocks glass and proceed as written. Toasted sugar tastes less sweet than plain, and can add a subtle note of caramel to play off the bourbon or rye.
