Why Half Calorie Rice

Hopefully, if you are a regular reader of my blog, you know I believe in the importance of a balanced diet and am not a fan of weight-loss gimmicks.

Unless your diet is made up entirely of riceand I do know some people who wouldnt mind this saving calories on just one item might not really change much for you. But the results of the study have possibly bigger implications that could help fight the obesity epidemic around the world in the future.

For example, is there a way to increase the resistant starch in other foods, such as pasta or bread? And personally, the main reason I was intrigued by this study was because it completely contradicts the medias message that added fat is the enemy.

If you havent seen it yet, heres a sample of What I Eat In A Day.

So I was thrilled to see scientific evidence backing yet another possible benefit of including a little healthy fat during cooking, and I couldnt give up the opportunity to share this information, because I know so many readers of my blog are afraid of using any fat at all, thanks to being bombarded with negative messages all over the media.

On an entirely unrelated note, I was shocked at how soft and fluffy the rice turned out with this particular cooking method. Even if you are not counting calories, you might never go back to cooking your rice any other way.

If you get an error that reads: Measurement not recognized, try converting your measurement into grams. You can easily convert the measurement with a unit converter if needed, or do a quick Google Search. In my recipe, the analyzer got hung up on 1 cup pecans, a search told me 1 cup of pecans is roughly about 109 grams.

Tips when adding your recipe:

  • Combine duplicate ingredients: If you are analyzing a cake recipe that has 2 cups of granulated sugar in the cake, and 1 cup of granulated sugar in the frosting, instead of listing them separately combine them for a total of 3 cups of granulated sugar. Im not sure why but the analyzer doesnt like duplicate ingredients listed.
  • Remove duplicate measurements, butter is sometimes listed in a recipe as: 1 stick butter, remove one of the measurements.
  • Remove ingredient options: If your recipe reads: 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans make sure to omit the one you are not using. 2 ingredients on one line will cause an error message.

So How Do I Work Out The Calories In A Recipe

How to Calculate Calories in a Recipe

Calories are generally listed everywhere, so even though this can be a little time intensive to work out, you probably wont have to do it very often!

The easiest way to calculate the calories for a recipe is through apps like My Fitness Pal and Nutracheck.

You could Google each ingredient individually and add them up.

Lets use our Breakfast Bakes recipe as an example.

Breakfast Bakes: Serves 2

  • 1/2 tin Baked Beans170 calories
  • 4 Bacon Medallions197 calories
  • 2 Mushrooms sliced10 calories
  • 20 g Low Fat Cheddar Cheese65 calories
  • Low Calorie Cooking Spray10 calories

The total calories for the recipe is 642. As it serves 2 you need to divide this number by 2 to get the number of calories per portion. 642 / 2 = 321 calories per portion.

Remember, calories will vary depending on the brands of items used and most recipes are a guideline based on generic values. For the most accurate calorie count its always advised to use the weights and nutrition information from the ingredients you are cooking with.

How to Calculate the Serving Size in Recipes

Calories are a measurement of how much energy is in one serving of food.Gaining an understanding of the total number of calories eaten can assist in helping to manage weight, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The amount of calories consumed in a recipe is based upon the total serving. Recipes may or may not have the total number of calories listed, but a few steps can assist in identifying the number of calories per serving.

Divide a piece of paper into two columns and label them packaged foods and non-packaged foods. Separate the foods in your recipe into the two categories. On the left side of the paper, list packaged foods or foods with a nutrition facts label. On the right side of the paper, list non-packaged foods, such as fruits and vegetables, that are in the recipe.

Write down the number of calories that are in each serving of packaged ingredient in your recipe on the left side of the paper. For example, if 1 cup of sugar is 774 calories and 2 cups of sugar are needed, then multiply two times 774 calories to get 1,548 calories from sugar in the recipe. The number of calories can be found on the back or side of the product on the nutrition facts label.

Add the total number of calories in the recipe from both packaged and non-packaged foods. Write this number down.

Calculating Calories For Recipes And Mixed Dishes

A lot of the foods we eat have more than one ingredient. For example, a chicken breast is rarely prepared plain and may include some type of fat used during cooking, a sauce added afterward, or other ingredients. Multi-ingredient recipes can be calculated by entering data for each individual ingredient into an MS Excel® spreadsheet that has been set up for this purpose. The spreadsheet gives you the option to list how many servings the recipe makes and will calculate the calories and nutrients per serving. Follow the steps below to calculate the nutrition information for a multi-ingredient food or recipe.

  • Type the names and amounts of each ingredient into the spreadsheet.
  • Go to the USDA National Nutrient Database. Determine calories and nutrients for each individual ingredient in the correct quantity as described above.
  • Enter the data into the spreadsheet and it will add up values for the total recipe. When you enter the number of servings, the spreadsheet will determine calories and nutrients per serving.

How Many Calories Do You Need

Many people seek to lose weight, and often the easiest way to do this is to consume fewer calories each day. But how many calories does the body actually need in order to be healthy? This largely depends on the amount of physical activity a person performs each day, and regardless of this, is different for all people â there are many different factors involved, not all of which are well-understood or known.

Some factors that influence the number of calories a person needs to remain healthy include age, weight, height, sex, levels of physical activity, and overall general health. For example, a physically active 25-year-old male that is 6 feet in height requires considerably higher calorie intake than a 5-foot-tall, sedentary 70-year-old woman. Though it differs depending on age and activity level, adult males generally require 2,000-3000 calories per day to maintain weight while adult females need around 1,600-2,400 according to the U.S Department of Health.
