Beyond Meat Beyond Sausage Hot Italian (14.0 oz) from Whole Foods ...

Im calling this my Fall rigatoni. You want comfort? You want a heaping bowl full of delicious pasta in the most decadent, creamy sauce? Then this spicy vegan pasta is for you.

I actually tested this one back in June, but held onto it for a few months until the weather cooled down a bit it felt more like a late September recipe than a summer one. I cant even tell you how rich and wonderful this pasta is- and, its vegan!

The secret to this recipe is using Beyond Meats new sausage offerings. No, this isnt sponsored and I suppose technically you could sub in another sausage. However, there are a few things that I really love about the Beyond brand that I think its worth it for this meal.

For one, their vegan sausages come with an edible casing! Perfect for grilling and they easily slip off to reveal sausage that can easily be broken down into crumbles. Ive essentially taken a spicy sausage pasta recipe sans pork sans dairy but NOT sans flavor. For my non-vegan friends, I swear that you wont be able to tell the difference. I made this for my family when I was home a few months ago and even my die-hard carnivore sister had seconds.

This spicy vegan pasta is also perfect as date night pasta. I dont know about you, but decadent meals like this always feel like theyre worthy of date-night in. Now that weve got a toddler and another one on the way, its become harder and harder for BL to find quality time for one another.

I first made these red beans and rice about a year ago and have been tweaking the recipe every time I make it. After a year of testing, I finally perfected this recipe.

My favorite part when cooking this dish is seeing all the beautiful colors while sautéing the bell pepper, celery and red onion. Arent plants so beautiful? Im always mesmerized by their rich colors.

Beyond Meats Hot Sausage Is The Shining Star Of This Plant

A Planty Life Hot Italian Sausage Sandwich

Feed this sausage sandwich to a carnivore and theyll have no idea its vegan. Theres not a single Google result for this exact phrase. Until now. Yes, its a bit of a long phrase to expect an exact match for, but I promise it holds true thanks to Beyond Meats Hot Italian Sausage.

It grills like pork sausage. Its as well-seasoned as any hot Italian sausage Ive had and the texture is spot on. Heres what took it over the top for me: the snap of the casing as your teeth bite through it. This familiar texture is what plant-based eaters crave just as much as flavor.

The Planty Life Difference: Roasted Garlic and Arugula Pesto

There are two additions to this sandwich that make it slightly non-traditional. Trust me when I tell you its worth the extra few minutes of your time to get these into this meal.

A Planty Life Arugula Pesto is so good it has its own article. Read it and make it. Itll take you five minutes and there will be leftovers for meals and snacks for a week.

A whole clove of garlic roasted in the oven creates liquid gold for lovers of garlic. Dont skip this step. Once you taste it, youll search for other foods to spread it on. Heres how to make it:

Once the clove is cool enough to pick up, but still warm, thick garlic paste will come out of the top when squeezed. Youll spread this onto one side of the bun, opposite of the pesto, combining for Oscar-worthy supporting roles to the Beyond Meat Sausage.

Why Vegans Should Support Companies Like Beyond Meat

BEYOND meat Italian Sausage Recipe | Meatless Mondays with Naomi

One thing Ive heard echo around the internet since the explosion of Beyond products nationally, is that its not healthy.

But while I am not here to argue about its healthiness, I do want to point out that I personally believe all vegans should be supporting it, whether you enjoy eating it or not.

    Reason being?

Well, for starters, there will always be food that people view as unhealthy, and we will never see things like hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream, and pizza take a final bow. Because no matter how healthy you think you are, one things for sure: youre not perfect. Everyone has moments where they indulge in food, especially in America.

I dont care if you eat Buddha bowls, drink smoothies, or dehydrate raw crackers 18 hours ahead of time at some point your going to indulge in something unhealthy, or try to make a healthier version of an unhealthy item. Hence the creation of things like nice cream and black bean brownies.

And thats ok, because youre a human being dammit!

Plus, if you grew up with a constant rotation of fast food, those feelings of getting a happy meal when you were a child isnt going to go away overnight. At the end of a long day, sometimes we just want a cookie, some fries, or a piece of pizza . I mean hell, I grew up in the south for cryin out loud! #hellofriedchicken

And so, perfect people aside , Beyond is necessary, and Ill tell you why.

And Beyond Meat is doing a kick ass job at it.

    • Dont bake everything at once. Everything cooks at different times. To avoid over-or under-baking any particular ingredient timing each veggie is key. Thats why we start with baking the potatoes first before adding the other veggies, as they take different times to cook.
    • Cut your veggies according to cook time. Remember that the smaller you cut the veggie, the quicker theyll cook! Its best to stick to 1 inch pieces for each veggie.

Is Beyond Meat Better For The Planet

The Beyond Meat website touts a 2018 life-cycle analysis showing that producing its Beyond Burgers generates 90-percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than regular beef. The peer-reviewed study, commissioned by Beyond Meat and conducted by the University of Michigan, compared the environmental impact of the Beyond Burger to a quarter-pound US beef burger and found that the Beyond Burger also uses 99-percent less water, 93-percent less land, and 46-percent less energy in its production.

But some environmental groups have criticized Beyond Meat for not publicly disclosing the amount of GHG emissions from its operations, supply chains, or consumer waste, and for not disclosing the effects of its operations on forests or how much water is used, making its planet-friendly claims difficult to verify. Marco Springmann, a senior environmental researcher at the University of Oxford, agrees that switching to a plant-based diet is better for the planet, and companies like Beyond Meat are tapping into an important food movement. However, while their processed products have about half the carbon footprint that chicken does, they also have five times more of a footprint than a bean patty.

What To Do With Italian Sausage Meat

This is actually pretty great. So, you know how sometimes a recipe will call for Italian sausages and then have you slice the sausage before or after cooking it? The idea is that you dont want the sausages whole, but instead, you want bits of the meat spread out through the dish.

Instead of buying sausages for these recipes, you can make your own sausage meat. Then you just add it to the recipes that called for the sliced sausage.

Its usually for pasta dishes and soups that youll see this. Anywhere that you are hoping to have the sausages kind of crumble up and break apart through the dish, just use the sausage meat instead. It even saves you time since you dont have to slice anything, and the ground meat cooks faster and more evenly than meat shaped into sausages.

The other thing that you can do with Italian sausage meat is to make Italian sausage patties!

These are like breakfast sausage patties, but Italian flavored. Theyre wonderful in burgers, or for an Italian-inspired breakfast, or really, for anytime that you want homemade sausages but cant be bothered to get them into casings.

Simply shape them into the sized patty that youd like, the way you would make a burger patty. Then put them into a skillet and cook on each side until browned and no longer pink inside, about 3-4 minutes per side.

What Is The Best Way To Cook Them

Hot Italian Sausage by Beyond Meat

You can cook your sausages in many different ways, pan-frying on the skillet or griddle, grilling, or air frying. It is not recommended to boil or microwave them. Cooking them in the air fryer is pretty low maintenance and you get great results every time. The perfect crispy and juicy sausage!

A few things to keep in mind when cooking your plant-based sausages:

    • It is not recommended to cook from frozen. For best results thaw them in either the refrigerator or gently defrost them in the microwave until there isnt any ice on them.
    • Beware that they have a high fat content. As they cook, the sausages will release a lot of grease, so be cautious of this no matter which cooking method you use.
    • Internal temperature should be atleast 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Beyond Meat Sausage And Peppers

How about vegan sausage + peppers? There are some things that you might miss after going plant-based, a good Italian meal might be one of those things. After we went plant-based, I was worried about still being able to enjoy the traditional Italian meals I grew up eating. These Beyond Meat Sausage and Peppers taste EXACTLY like the dish I ate growing up! Beyond Meat sausage links, fresh peppers + onions, and fire roasted tomatoes. Super easy and I am so happy to add this one to my recipe collection!

Easy Italian Sausage Peppers + Onion Skillet Recipe

  • Stirfry your vegan sausage along with one sliced onion in some olive oil. I used the Beyond Meat Italian sausage, but any plant-based meat or protein of your preference will do. When onions are translucent, remove along with the sausage and set aside. Retain any liquid that might have released from Beyond Meat sausages in the skillet.
  • Mince a clove of garlic and saute till golden in olive oil at a low heat. Be certain to stir regularly, as garlic can burn within 10seconds if heat is too high, making it bitter and pungent.
  • Sautee peppers, sliced into strips, along with another sliced onion.NOTE: If you are using beyond meat Italian sausages, they would have released quite a bit of liquid, making for a tasty light sauce. If you are using regular soy sausages, or an alternative such as beans or mushrooms, you might wish to add a 250ml cup of vegan chicken stock or a tablespoon of powdered vegan chicken stock dissolved in 250ml a cup of water, along with a tablespoon of tomato paste and a tablespoon of white spirit vinegar / apple cider vinegar to the skillet now, to create your own light sauce.)
  • Sprinkle a teaspoon of mixed italian herbs, or a teaspoon containing a combination of dried thyme, sweet basil and oregano over the skillet. If youd like some extra spice, add a pinch of chilli, adjusting for your preferred heat.
  • When peppers are soft, after approx 15 minutes, return the set-aside sausage and onions to the skillet. Mix well, and allow to warm through.
