Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F . Grease and flour a 9- or 10-inch fluted tube pan (such as Bundt®.
  • Beat butter and sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until light and fluffy and noticeably lighter in color. Add room-temperature eggs 1 at a time, allowing each egg to blend into the butter mixture before adding the next. Beat in vanilla with the last egg.
  • Mix together flour, baking soda, salt, and mace in a bowl. Add flour mixture to the butter-egg mixture alternately with sour cream, mixing until just incorporated. Transfer batter to the prepared pan and spread to smooth top.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the cake comes out clean, about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Cool for at least 10 minutes before inverting pan onto a cooling rack, and tapping out the cake. Dust with confectioners’ sugar before serving.

  • Use room temperature ingredients. I fought against this baking advice for years but once I finally embraced it, the texture of all my cakes improved! Amazing how that works, huh? I still sometimes cheat to speed up the process by microwaving cold sticks of butter for 10 seconds to soften it a bit without melting it and sticking the eggs in bowls of hot tap water for 10 minutes while I pull out other ingredients. But ideally you should let the eggs, butter, sour cream, and milk sit out on the counter for an hour before making the cake.
  • Really cream the butter and sugar until it is light and fluffy. This takes about 3-4 minutes of beating on high speed with a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or using an electric mixer.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, but don’t overmix once you add the flour.
  • Grease and flour your bundt pan well using baking spray, not cooking spray. Baking spray has flour in it and is a total game changer when it comes to making bundt cakes that release easily from the pan.

Minnie Lee Croley was born in 1901 on Pages Mill Creek in Coffee County, Alabama. She died at the age of 87 and is buried in Gadsden County, Florida. During her life, she was known for her skills as an old-time Southern country cook. This recipe was one of her favorites.

It continues to be a favorite with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her grandson, Doug Croley, and his wife Dianne have graciously shared this incredible recipe and their memories of Grandmother Croley with me, and have permitted me to share it with you.

According to Doug, the sour cream pound cake his Grandmother Croley baked was a favorite of all the older men in the WP Woodbery Hunt Club in Gadsden County. They always seemed to be asking my Grandfather Croley to get her to bake it. The men liked to eat it while drinking their coffee usually black. The Woodbery Hunt Club hunted close to Shady Rest, which is in Gadsden County. But that was a long time ago.

Doug also reminisced about watching his grandmother make this special treat from scratch when he was a little boy and said he always looked forward to getting to lick the spoon and the bowl once the batter was poured into the pan. His greatest fear was that his grandmother would scrape the mixing bowl too clean, and he wouldnt have any batter to eat!

My mom clipped this recipe out of either a newspaper or magazine. It is different than other red velvet cake recipes I have seen because it contains sour cream. I have tried several recipes for red velvet cake in the past, but this one is by far the best and is my new favorite. Enjoy!

1 ounce red food coloring
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
4 tablespoons butter, softened
1 lb powdered sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Mix flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt.
  • Beat butter and sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed for 5 minutes or until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in eggs, one at a time.
  • Mix sour cream, milk, food coloring and vanilla.
  • Gradually beat in flour mixture on low speed just until blended.
  • Spoon batter into greased / floured 9 x 13 inch pan or into paper-lined muffin cups , filling each cup 2/3 full.

How To Make This Recipe:

When you are ready to make this old-fashioned sour cream pound cake, preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.

Grease a large angel food cake pan or bundt pan well with Crisco. You can also use non-stick baking spray, which contains flour or grease the pan with butter.

If you are using butter or Crisco, sprinkle in a few spoonfuls of flour or granulated sugar over the greased pan. Tap the pan to distribute evenly over the bottom, sides, and tube of the pan. Pour out any excess flour or sugar.

In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar using an electric hand mixer or stand mixer until fluffy. Stop to scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

With the mixer running, add the egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and mix well.

With the mixer running, add the flour, baking soda, and salt a little at a time until it is all incorporated. Add the sour cream and mix until it is well combined in the batter. The batter will be stiff.

Use an electric mixer to stiffly beat six egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Gently fold the egg whites into the batter by hand. A rubber spatula works well for this.

Pour the batter into the cake pan and smooth out if necessary.
