How To Make Dog Food

Ask the Vegan Vet! Q& A with Dr. Richard Pitcairn ð

If you have a dog with special needs when it comes to his/her nutrition, don’t be concerned. You will find valuable information in the Dr. Pitcairn’s book for making dog food for those pets that require variations in their diet.

Their needs are addressed by groups that include: pregnant or nursing females young, half-grown and older puppies older dogs dogs living in cold or very hot weather vegetarians conditions of malnourishment, anemia or dogs in convalescence.

Adaptations to the diet are very well explained for these groups as well as making dog food recipe adjustments.

Because home cooked dog food will no doubt perk up your dog’s appetite, here’s a guide providing the average daily amount of food your dog needs based on his weight. Naturally, the amount of exercise he gets will have a bearing on this also. But, keep an eye on Rover’s waistline as a good indicator and adjust amounts accordingly.

If Youre Not Quite Ready To Jump Whole

Avoid the temptation to simplify these additions even further by just throwing a slab of meat or a dab of oil on the kibble. Meat is dramatically low in calcium as compared to phosphorus and could result in a net calcium deficiency in the diet. Thats why a calcium supplement is added. Extra oil by itself will lower the overall percentage of protein and every other nutrient in the kibble, which may already contain marginal amounts.

As with other recipes, you can always pre-mix larger amounts and freeze extras, thawing and using them as needed.

Meat Supplement for Dog Kibble

1 pound chopped or ground raw turkey, chicken, lean hamburger, lean chuck or lean beef heart

4 teaspoons vegetable oil

1-3/4 teaspoons bone meal

50-200 i.u. vitamin E

1000-2000 i.u. vitamin A

Mix the oil, powders and vitamins together. Then combine them with the meat, coating it well. At mealtime, feed 1/4 cup of this mixture for every cup of dog kibble served. You can either mix them together or serve sepa- rately. This makes a little over two cups and is enough to supple- ment 8-9 cups dog kibble.

Egg Supplement for Dog Kibble

1/3 teaspoon bone meal

50-200 i.u. vitamin E

Mix this much oil, powders and vitamin E into every 1-2 cups dog kibble. Break the eggs over the top.

Cottage Cheese Supplement for Dog Kibble

Cottage cheese is an inexpensive, convenient and palatable source of protein to boost the nutritional value of kibble. No meat to chop, no shells to break

2-3 cups dog kibble

Cost Of Home Cooking Vs Commercial Pet Food Debatable

At a time when people are looking to save money wherever they can, home cooking is likely to be more expensive than some of the popular grocery store brands, Pitcairn said, simply because of how much food you get in one bag for such a low cost.

“It’s going to cost more to make the food … but on the other hand, you have to factor in what it’s going to cost you in veterinary bills,” Pitcain said.

Lascola, who had been feeding Guido a high-end premium kibble before making the switch, said cooking for his dog really hasn’t cost him that much more.

He estimated he feeds Guido, a small-breed dog, for about $2 a day, spending about 3 1/2 hours to make enough meals at once for the coming month, which he then freezes.

Lascola, 45, said his foray in home cooking was borne out of a desire to find anything his buddy would eat that wouldn’t cause continued digestive upset or worsen the seizures Guido has suffered for years.

Adopted at the age of 9 months old from a family that didn’t understand the needs of a sensitive breed like the Italian greyhound, Guido was seizing about once a month and had constant bouts of vomiting and diarrhea.

Lascola, whose family fed his childhood dogs kibble with no problems, said he had vets tell him to euthanize Guido.

“I was still ignorant to the food issues,” he said, even though “he had all the signs of bad quality food.”

“What I didn’t realize is I was killing him,” Lascola said.

Adding Fresh Food To A Commercial Diet

Good foods to add to a commercial diet include eggs and meat , canned fish with bones , yogurt or kefir, cottage cheese, and healthy leftovers. Raw meaty bones can also be fed, though its best if theyre not combined with kibble in the same meal. You can add veggies and fruit in small amounts, but remember that commercial foods are already high in carbohydrates, so there is little benefit in adding more. I would not recommend adding grains to a commercial diet at all.

Puppies and seniors will benefit from the addition of high-quality fresh foods as much or more than younger adult dogs will. A high protein is good for almost all dogs and will not cause harm.

Norma Crawley of Ardmore, Oklahoma, reports, Since I began incorporating raw with kibble, our three dogs do everything short of tucking their napkins in and clicking their silverware together at dinnertime. They dine as if they are at 21. They seem happier, healthier, and they are my constant shadows from late afternoon through the evening. Its made such a positive difference in three canine lives, and mine too. I’ve always fed a high quality kibble through the years, but who knew this raw business could be so much fun, and so good for them?

Is Vegan Food Right For Your Dog Or Cat

Last updated on By Will Falconer, DVM

Dr. Marybeth Minter shares a case with us, a dog Ive heard about over the years, long suffering with horrible allergic skin disease. Kali, the middle aged Border Collie had lost all her coat, had open sores, was regularly plagued with fleas, and Chrystal, her owner had tried everything without success.

Kali was on various raw food diets, healthy supplements, and had been prescribed for by two other well qualified homeopathic vets in the past without much improvement. When Dr. Minter was called upon, in addition to using the constitutional prescribing approach, she suggested that toxins might be playing a role and recommended a radical diet change: a plant based diet, based on recipes from Dr. Richard Pitcairn.

Chrystal rolled up her sleeves and began feeding Kali this way, thinking she had nothing to lose: shes tried everything else and her poor dog had suffered long enough!

Tune in to hear what this radical idea has resulted in. Regardless of your views on right vs wrong feeding, this is worth your time.

Growing Number Of Pet Owners Turn To Home Cooking

Homemade Dog Food for Pancreatitis Recipe (Simple, 5 Ingredients)

A growing number of pet owners are turning to home cooking for their dogs.

Oct. 14, 2009& #151 — While some dogs look forward to the sound of kibble clanging in their dish at dinnertime, Guido looks forward to the smell of pork cooked with summer squash and oatmeal.

The 9-year-old Italian greyhound is one of a growing number of dogs whose owners have turned away from the billion-dollar pet food industry over concerns about their dogs’ health and the quality of commercial dog food.

“It started out that a lot of people thought I was nuts,” Joe Lascola, Guido’s owner, told ABCNews.com.

Lascola, of Huntington Beach, Calif., started homecooking for Guido in 2004, mixing his ingredients in with kibble in an effort to deal with the dog’s severe medical problems. But after the 2007 pet food recall, Lascola went kibble-free and, with the help of an animal nutritionist, began cooking all of Guido’s meals.

“I think the recalls really woke a lot of people up,” he said. “When you’re mass producing something, something is going to go wrong at some point.”

Dr. Richard Pitcairn has researched animal nutrition for decades and his book “Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats” is considered by some to be a staple among home cookers.

“To my surprise, it made a big difference,” he said, “bigger than I expected.”

Animals fed some kibbles long-term, he said, show signs of lessened energy and duller coats and are more susceptible to parasites and fleas.

Dr Pitcairn The History Before The Book

Dr. Richard Pitcairn started looking into natural methods for pet health care when he felt he was seeing poor results with the treatment methods he had studied in veterinary school. His first thought was that he needed to learn more so he went back to school to expand his knowledge base.

This didnt provide the results he was expecting either so he started studying nutrition because he understood how important it was in maintaining a health body and immune system. As he started studying the pet food industry he became increasingly interested in natural, homemade cat food recipes and dog food recipes.

He started seeing great results with this so he began exploring more natural and holistic pet health care methods. He finally settled on homeopathy for pets as his preferred method.

After studying homeopathy for pets for several years he is sharing his knowledge with other veterinarians by teaching a yearly course, the Professional Course in Veterinary Homeopathy.

I have heard that in a trial That dogs given GMO soy milk by the seventh generation were rendered infertile. If this in fact is true it is unbelievable that Monsanto, Bayer, Nu farm et all are allowed to continue with few restraints. Why were they allowed to patent seeds that existed for aeons?

  • Feed them your own prepared foods, easier then you think. The dogs do not complain and are greatful for your efforts.

You will also cook better for yourself and the rest of your family when you realize the value of a nutritional meal. PLEASE use organic when possible.By getting away from the commercial foods and feeding real foods to your pets you will see many positive changes in your pets health.

Look up Foods Pets Die For then look up the feeding trials the AAFCO feeding trials and I assure you, you will NOT be impressed with their standards of quality. In reality, it should really pi$$ you off!! Please stopsupporting this low quality crap.

  • What do you think about grain free diets for dogs & cats? I have a fat dog. Dont the carbs in a diet make him fatter, while feeding more protein & less grain make him thinner? Or is it a matter of feeding him a lower protein diet that will cause the weight to come off. I have used your recipes for a very long time now, but your book doesnt address the grain free issue. Thank- you for your assistance. Susan Bruce

It wasnt until the 1940s or so that there were commercial pet foods on the market. Prior to that, dogs ate what the humans didnt finish.food scraps.

Americans will spend about 1% of their income on their pets annually, vet care being the number one expense, food is second.
