Gastric Sleeve Meal Ideas
Gastric sleeve meal ideas are truly endless and you can experiment with a variety of approved foods according to the stage of the surgical process you are currently in. The gastric sleeve diet recipes you choose will depend on timing to better meet your progress and bodily needs.
Early stage options such as broth, protein shakes, and smoothies, then progressing into thicker soups, mashed potatoes, low-fat cheeses, egg salads, chili, omelets, stews, oatmeal, turkey, and fish can all be very tasty options to add to your menu. You can also put together more creative ideas, such as cottage cheese pancakes or late stage ideas such as lentil pasta, slow cooker beef tacos, or sugar-free pumpkin ricotta pie.
For the first 2 weeks after surgery, the liquid diet phase is required and people may enjoy beef broth or sugar-free protein supplement drinks each day, among others.
Following the pureed food phase afterward for an additional 2 weeks will expand your delicious meal options, adding:
- split pea soup with ham
- lentil soup
- navy beans in tomato sauce
- pureed oatmeal with skim milk
- soft scrambled eggs
Basically, if it is healthy, sugar-free, and looks like baby food, you are on the right track in this phase!
The next 4 weeks will require a soft foods stage. Eating meals such as:
- crust-less smoked turkey tomato quiche
- frittatas with spinach and cheese
- spicy tuna salad with a side of hummus
Remember to keep meals low-fat, sugar free, and youll be successful!

Gastric Sleeve Post Op Diet Recipes
Recipes after gastric sleeve surgery are going to be most important because you will be using them for the rest of your life. The first two to three months following your VSG surgery are crucial until you transition to a normalized diet. Discuss with your nutritionist about some recipes for post gastric sleeve surgery according to your personal tastes and preferences. These recipes will broadly come under the following three categories.
- Liquid Foods: Immediately after your sleeve gastrectomy surgery, you will be put on a clear liquid diet. Within a few days, you will move on to thicker and full bodied liquids and broths. This stage may last for about two weeks.
- Soft Foods: After the liquid diet, as your incisions are healing, your surgeon will allow you to include pureed foods followed by soft foods in your diet. Ask your nutritionist for gastric sleeve post op diet recipes for this stage.
- Solid Foods: Once your surgeon determines that your new stomach pouch is tolerating various types of foods, they will ask you to transition to solid, normalized diet. This may happen in about 2 to 3 months post-surgery.

Pured Diet For Gastric Sleeve
Since I had the gastric sleeve procedure, I can only speak of my experience from a gastric sleeve background. As I mentioned earlier, when I puréed foods, I used a Ninja Blender. To me, this phase was exciting because I could try different foods, and I knew it was a bridge between the liquid and soft diet phases. Very Well Health offers some other tips that I found helpful during this phase. For example, peel fruits with the skin before puréeing them in the blender. You should also pass fruits with seeds through a sieve before eating.
Remember that your newly formed stomach is still healing. It takes time for the stomach to be fully able to digest foods you could eat before. Therefore, its important to make sure none of the food youre consuming is in solid format. Avoid things like nuts and seeds because they are hard to get to the right consistency for this stage. Greek yogurt is a really good food to eat during the puréed stage because its high in protein, and its already in the proper consistency.

You need to:
- Drink six 8 oz glasses of water each day. Take 5 to 15 minutes to drink 1 oz.
- You may drink out of a regular glass. Do not use straws. Do not gulp liquids or drink quickly. This can cause abdominal pain and intense nausea.
- Stop eating when you are full!
- Start taking vitamin and mineral supplements after your 1 week follow-up visit, as ordered by your surgeon.

How Many Calories Should Be Consumed During A Pureed Diet
Calorie intake will differ based on the surgery, restriction, complications, and toleration. Similar to before surgery, your calorie intake will decrease again. For about the next 2 months following surgery, it can be common to only consume around 300-600 calories per day. After the 2 months, it can increase to up to 1,000 calories per day.
Don’t expect big changes in eating capability in one day. Lifestyle adjustments take time, especially to promote long-term success. The diet phase process will promote healing, relieve discomfort after surgery, and maintain weight loss.
It is extremely important to follow the guidance of your healthcare provider and dietitian during this time to ensure you are receiving all of the nutrition you require.

Thoughts On Italian Chicken Puree Bariatric Pureed Diet
This recipe sounds great! The pureed diet isnt for the faint of heart! I remember being on pureed at my nephews second birthday party. Everyone else was eating sandwiches and salads, and I had pureed fat-free refried beans. It was sobering to say the least. Im glad I was able to get my obesity under control thanks to my sleeve.
This recipe would be really good layered with some ricotta cheese with mozzarella cheese baked on top. Yum!
Do you need to use canned chicken for your chicken recipes Im 2 weeks post op and about to start the pureed food soon.Im not sure if I can make my own shredded chicken breast that it would be tender/soft enough.
That is the shittest recipe I have ever seen!! Tomato sauce and canned chicken!!Yuk!Make something from scratch with fresh ingredients!!
Hi Tess. Its true the post bariatric puréed diet leaves much to be desired. Healing is top of mind and textures can cause significant issues. To create this recipe from scratch I would recommend boiling chicken thighs and finely shredding then mixing with a homemade tomato puree. Many patients would prefer not to go through the work for only a couple bites and the puree diet is quite temporary- usually two weeks.
Cant wait to try. Cant wait for soft foods lol thank you for posting this.
Yay congratulations Ashley! Its not for the faint of heart but its so worth it!

What Can You Eat On A Pured Diet
At this point in your post-op journey, youre probably craving something different, which is great. Now, you can try things like puréed scrambled eggs, chicken, low-fat refried beans, applesauce and low-fat cottage cheese. You can also have stage one or stage two baby food if you dont want to purée it yourself. Other foods to try are applesauce, puréed bananas, puréed canned vegetables and puréed canned fruits.
You can also continue any of the liquids from the first two stages, but you want to make sure everything is low-fat and low-sugar. Make sure your liquids arent carbonated or caffeinated. Dont use a straw. The reason these restrictions are in place is that straws and carbonation can introduce excess gas to your stomach, which can be quite painful. Remember that your stomach is still healing. Caffeine can also cause stomach ulcers, at which you have a higher risk of developing at this point. Its important to stick to these guidelines. Its for your safety.
Fluid And Protein Goals Both Matter
At this stage youll continue to track both your fluid and protein intake. Your top priority continues to be drinking adequate fluid, at least 64 ounces a day. Your nutritionist will provide you with your protein goal.
As your body continues to heal, meeting your protein goal will be easier with the addition of more protein options in pureed form. Youll continue to get the majority of your protein from the high protein liquid diet options as you gradually add a small amounts of pureed food for variety.
To meet the rest of your 64 ounce daily fluid target, sip on mostly calorie-free, caffeine-free, and non-carbonated beverages. In addition to water, there are many delicious flavored waters, teas and diet drinks to choose from.
