Can Beef Stew Potatoes Be Frozen
Yes, you can use frozen potatoes for beef stew. You have a few different options for this. You can add in frozen potatoes that have been previously cooked to your beef stew in the slow cooker about 4-5 hours prior to serving. You can use southern style hash brown potatoes, but since theyre so much smaller than what youd normally use, add them 2-3 hours before serving. Ive also used two 14-oz cans of whole new potatoes that Ive cut up a bit. Add them in the last hour or so of cooking and theyre good to go!
What Kind Of Meat To Use In Beef Stew
I recommend using a boneless chuck roast to make beef stew. You can also use beef stew meat, but the stew meat that you buy pre-cut at the grocery store is often lower quality and less tender than buying a larger cut of beef and cutting it into smaller pieces yourself.
Look for a boneless beef chuck roast that is about 2 pounds total. A little bit of fat marbled throughout the meat will add flavor, but you should cut off any excess fat when you cube the meat.
How Do I Reheat Crockpot Beef Stew
- Crockpot: To reheat your Slow Cooker Beef Stew from the refrigerator, place your ceramic crockpot insert back into your crockpot and heat on low for 1-2 hours.
- Stove: Alternatively, you can reheat large batches on the stove over medium low heat, stirring occasionally until the beef is heated through to 165 degrees F. This may take 20-30 minutes, so plan accordingly.
- Microwave: For smaller batches or individual servings, you can use the microwave. Transfer stew to a microwave-safe dish, cover with a microwave-safe lid or paper towel. Microwave for 2 minutes, stir, then continue to microwave for 30-second intervals, if needed.

How To Make Slow Cooker Beef Stew:
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Cut the beef into 1 1/2 chunks, season generously with salt and pepper then add to the skillet searing well on two sides.
Transfer the beef to the slow cooker then add the diced onion and tomato paste to the skillet. Cook 1-2 minutes or until the onions have started to soften then pour in half of the beef stock.
Stir over medium heat, scraping the brown bits up from the skillet then add to the slow cooker along with the rest of the beef stock.
Top with the potatoes, carrots, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, thyme and rosemary, season with salt and pepper then stir together.
Cover and cook on HIGH for 3 hours or LOW for 6 hours. You want the meat and vegetables fork tender but not mushy.
How To Make Crockpot Beef Stew

Step 1: Sear Beef: First, season your meat with salt and pepper while it is still on the cutting board. There is no need to coat your beef in flour. Heat oil over high heat in a large cast iron skillet. Using tongs, sear meat on all sides until browned. If you dont have a cast iron skillet, you can use a nonstick pan, it will just take a little longer go brown.
Step 2: Vegetables: Add the beef to the slow cooker along with chopped potatoes, carrots, celery, onion, garlic and bay leaf.
Step 3: Gravy: Whisk together flour, crushed tomatoes, beef consommé beef broth, soy sauce, Dijon mustard, beef bouillon and seasonings in the same pot you cooked your beef in so it soaks up all the flavor. The flour will be lumpy at first but will dissolve as you cook and continue to whisk. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer until thickened to the consistency of gravy. Add it to slow and give everything a big stir
Preparing gravy this way results in the most amazing gravy broth. I call it gravy broth because it is not watery like beef broth but rather the perfect silky consistency of a medium-thick gravy .

Everyones favorite comforting beef stew made easily in the crockpot! The meat is SO TENDER and the stew is rich, chunky and hearty!
We had another heat wave in LA again. And when I say heat wave, I mean its 95 degrees. In the beginning of October, of course.
Then it was 55 the next day. The following week, it was 98.
Still. You know I made this beef stew when it was in the high 90s, not when it was our one day of winter.
But fortunately for my slow cooker, I barely had to lift a finger. I just ate this piping hot bowl of comforting stew with the AC on my face.
What Type Of Meat Do You Use For Beef Stew
Stew is a great recipe to use inexpensive cuts of beef in because cooking it low and slow in a crock pot will tenderize it well. Its incredibly disappointing to go thru the steps to make a beef stew and the beef is tough and chewy. I prefer to use a beef chuck roast in my beef stew. I cut the beef into 1-1.5 chunks and the end result is perfect. If you purchase store-bought stew meat, I suggest sprinkling it with some seasoned meat tenderizer and letting it sit overnight. If youre on a budget, you can also use cooked ground beef too.

Winter Sundays are meant for crock pots around our house. Between church, basketball and getting ready for a full week ahead, Im always looking for the best easy crock pot dinners that the entire family will love, and this dinner never disappoints!
Chock full of veggies, barley and stew meat, this is sure to put the comfort in comfort food.
And, since its a crock pot dinner, it moves straight to the top of the list when I need an easy dinner idea.
Heres how I make this Beef Stew in a Crock Pot:
Gather all of the ingredients:
2 lb. stew meat 2 Russet potatoes peeled and diced into 1/2 inch squares 46 oz tomato juice 1 bay leaf 1/2 T sugar 1/2 cup quick barley
The key to this stew is browning the stew meat prior to throwing this all in the crock pot together my best advice is to not skip this step its pretty darn important! Before browning the stew meat, season all of the pieces of meat, give a good stir to coat the meat, and then brown in a pan. I LOVE the Ninja Crock Pot for this as this crock pot allows you to use the stove top function to brown the meat, and then turn the pan onto the slow cooker function to finish cooking.
Once all of the stew meat is slightly browned on all sides, add all of the tomato juice to the stew meat. Stir in the chicken broth, all of the vegetables, the sugar and the bay leaf. Add the lid and cook on low for 7 hours. This is where the magic comes in!
Heres Why This Beef Stew Is Now My Go
- Its a one dirty dish meal. No browning the beef needed. Because of the combination of spices you get the full flavor with little effort and less pans to clean since you only need your slow cooker.
- Its thick. Like, really thick. Unlike this vegetable beef soup it has a thick beefy broth. The flour encloses the beef before all the rest of the ingredients are added and creates the flavorful and hearty thick beef broth after hours of cook time.
- Did I mention easy? Throw it in there and let it go all. day. long.

Can You Put Frozen Meat Or Raw Stew Meat In The Crockpot
- Raw meat is perfectly safe to put into the slow cooker. In fact, after its browned it probably wont be fully cooked through. The crockpot finishes the job.
- Frozen beef is not safe to place in a crockpot. During cooking, the meat may spend too long at room temperature and become unsafe to eat.
- To thaw beef quickly and safely: Place your meat in a ziptop bag, squeeze out excess air, and seal. Then, place it in a large bowl, and fill the bowl with cold water. Let it sit for about 30 minutes. If its not thawed after this time, empty the water, and refill with fresh water.
Can Slow Cooker Stew Be Frozen
Of course! Beef Stew is actually one of my favorite freezer meals. Simple make the recipe, cool and then transfer to a freezable container. You have a couple options for this- you can freeze it in a tupperware container in a large ziplock freezer bag. when youre ready to eat it, let it thaw on the countertop or in the fridge until soft, then heat in the microwave or on the stovetop. I find that the flavors in beef stew get better with time, so freezing leftovers is a great idea.

How To Freeze Beef Stew
Stews freeze well, but there are some tips to remember:
If you plan on freezing the stew, you may want to add the potatoes when reheating since freezing makes potatoes soft and grainy. Also, leave out any starches or thickeners since it may separate after freezing. Wait to thicken until you reheat the stew.
To freeze: Allow your stew to cool down then transfer to heavy airtight containers or large resealable ziptop bags. Be sure not fill the containers or bags all the way to the top, leaving 1/2 inch to accommodate freezer expansion. Stews can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.
To reheat: Thaw in the refrigerator if frozen and use promptly. Reheat on low in the slow cooker or in a large pot on the stovetop, simmering on low.

Crockpot Beef Stew With Gravy
Beef stew cooks to perfection in the slow cooker and on the back end you add a bit of a thickening slurry to make a nice gravy sauce that weve all come to love about this stew.
Can you put raw beef in the slow cooker? You can but in keeping with a traditional beef stew recipe, the beef in my recipe is dredged in seasoned flour and browned in a skillet before adding it to the slow cooker.
Can you overcook beef stew? It is easier to overcook beef stew when cooking in a dutch oven than a slow cooker. The vegetables hold up better in your slow cooker and dont get mushy.
How do you make beef stew meat tender? Cutting up a chuck roast, which has a good fat ratio, ensures tender meat bites in this stew.
How Do You Add Flavor To Crockpot Stew
I have a few tips on adding quick flavor to your beef stew recipe. The first is to use seasoned meat tenderizer. It actually has a really great combination of spices that adds a wonderful flavor to beef stew. As a bonus, it also tenderizes your beef! Id use about 1.5 teaspoons sprinkled onto your beef after you cut it into chunks. My second tip is to make your own beef broth from some type of beef broth concentrate and to simple make a stronger broth. You can either add 1.5x the concentrate or even double.
My third tip is to simply follow the directions and add all the ingredients in the recipe. Sometimes I hear from readers that they made several changes and didnt like the resulting flavor. I add a ton of flavor in this recipe- an entire onion, garlic, cooking wine, a bay leaf, thyme, parsley, etc. Add it all in and then let the slow cooker process work its magic! If you want a really flavorful beef stew, do all 3 of my tips!

Can I Freeze Beef Stew
I would not advocate freezing your cooked Slow Cooker Beef Stew because potatoes do not freeze-and-reheat well. They turn into a bizarre, mushy texture. If you still want to freeze your Crockpot Beef Stew, I suggest removing the potatoes.
