How To Make The Best White Russian Recipe
The White Russian was once a not-so-well-known cocktail that all changed when The Dude came along. The White Russian was first mixed up back in 1949 when Gustave Tops, a Belgian bartender, dreamt up two luxurious cocktails, the Black and the White Russian. The difference? Isn’t it obvious? The Black Russian lacks cream. Looking to get creative? Make some alterations of your own – milk is a common substitute for cream. Although the cocktail is going on seventy years, it really only burst into the American consciousness when The Dude aka The Big Lebowski brought it to the big screen.

Where Did The White Russian Originate
While its easy to assume the drink has origins in Russia, its story actually begins at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels. In 1949, a bartender named Gustav Topps created both the Black Russian and the White Russian cocktails to honor Perle Mesta, a former U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg known for throwing lavish parties for artists, politicians, and entertainers. The Russian in the title signifies the use of vodka in the cocktails.
Since then, the White Russian lived somewhat in obscurity until the 1998 movie The Big Lebowski, in which Jeffrey the Dude Lebowski is seen kicking back a White Russian in multiple scenes. Now, you cant mention the name of the cocktail without someone saying The dude abides.

How To Make The Best White Russian
When making such a simple cocktail, details do matter. So to make the best White Russian, you should use quality products, carefully measure the ratios, and keep a few other things in mind. But let’s start with the ingredients.
First and foremost, you need a solid Vodka base. If you don’t have a favorite brand: Absolut Vodka is a great choice and quite affordable. But most importantly, stay away from flavored Vodkas. Those add artificial aromas you most likely don’t want in your drink. And even more so when making it for the first time.
Next up is the coffee liqueur. For me, Kahlúa is the best choice as it is good value for money. -The delicious Mexican coffee liqueur is a staple in bars around the globe for a reason.
And the final ingredient that will turn our Black Russian into a white one is heavy cream. Some recipes replace heavy cream with lighter options like milk. But the cocktail really does depend on the rich and creamy texture heavy cream is adding. Therefore, if you mix your drink with milk, you will get something similar but not quite as tasty.
The ideal ratio strongly depends on personal preferences. But I like a 2:1:1. Two parts Vodka, one part coffee liqueur, and one part cream. Mix Vodka and coffee liqueur in a mixing glass with plenty of ice and strain into an ice-filled Old Fashioned glass. Then carefully pour over the heavy cream.

Vodka And The White Russian Recipe
This is a big drink, and vodka is not a big flavor, so the vodka brand is not that important. I am a fan of Smirnoff Vodka for most of my mixed drinks. If I were to drink the spirit alone, I might look a bit further at vodkas I want to try, but we are putting this in a drink with strong flavors. There is a strong coffee flavor, and the cream brings a heaviness to this drink that would likely hide the nuances of any vodka flavor.
Reach into your liquor cabinet and grab that vodka you would use on the regular. Keep the top shelf stuff where it is.
How Many Calories Are In A Classic White Russian
In this recipe, there are approximately 345 calories. This is based on a mix of 2 ounces of vodka, 1 ounce of generic coffee liqueur, and 1 ounce of heavy cream.
I sometimes scale the cream back to a ½ ounce, and that will bring the calorie count down to about 293.
The old school, equal parts recipe clocks in at 281 calories. The White Russian is an indulgent dessert drink, so its definitely not a dieters first choice, but you can go a little lighter by choosing milk or skipping the creamy element altogether and making a Black Russian.

How To Make A White Russianperfectly
Want to make this drink recipe to impress guests? Weve got a few ways to serve it that make it look impressive. Heres how to make a White Russian:
- Add 2 ounces vodka and 1 ounce coffee liqueur to a glass. Add ice, then 1 ounce of heavy cream.
- Stir gently to get the swirl effect. Stir a White Russian vigorously and its a solidly beige drink. But want to get the swirl effect? Stir it gently just a few times, and the cream will swirl into the vodka and Kahlua in a beautiful pattern. It looks much more impressive!
- To step it up: use clear ice! Clear ice is artisanal ice thats crystal clear, instead of cloudy like normal ice. Cut it into large, organic shapes and it looks like something youd find at an upscale bar! Its easy to make: all you need is 24 hour and a small cooler. Go to How to Make Clear Ice.
To Shake Or To Build In The Glass
Some prefer to shake their White Russians, and shaking would be the proper way to fix a cocktail with cream. Shaking will lend an extra smooth mouthfeel as the cream becomes gently whipped.
Shaking will also increase the dilution a bit, so keep that mind. Whichever way you choose, rest assured it will still be delicious and oh so indulgent!
If shaking this drink, I like to use only a half ounce of cream to ensure that the finished product doesnt taste watered down.

About This White Russian Recipe
A White Russian is simple: vodka, coffee flavored liqueur, and cream. If youve heard of a Black Russian, its the same drink without cream. Neither cocktail has anything to do with Russia, other than the fact that the main ingredient is vodka, a traditional Russian beverage.
One of my most popular recipes is for a Hot White Russian, a sweet warm mug of deliciousness on a cold evening, a great adult alternative to hot cocoa. And a perfectly chilled White Chocolate White Russian is so delightful, too.
According to Thrillist, the best vodka for a White Russian is cloud-distilled Aermoor, with flavors of buttered popcorn, vanilla frosting and birthday cake from Hilton Head Distillery. Titos is great mid-range brand, too, but Im sure you have your favorite brand.
You can make a White Russian in about 2 minutes. Simply pour vodka and Kahlúa into a couple of lowball glasses with ice, and top with very lightly whipped heavy cream.
To keep the layers separate, pour the cream over the ice cubes or a spoon so it floats on top.
Of course its absolutely wonderful if you skip the whipping step, too. If you pour the cream in slowly and carefully, youll still get these beautiful layers.
And Ill let you in on a secret, I often make this drink with 2% milk. I know, its like a crime! But its delicious drink even with a lower fat content. No judgment zone, right?

The Best White Cake Recipe
Last night as I was making this cake recipe , the smell wafting through my house as these cake layers were almost done in the oven was insane. And when I leveled the cakes and tasted the tops, my senses were overwhelmed. This is hands down the best white cake recipe I’ve ever had, and while it soaks up any liquid you want to add to it like a dream , it’s just simply delicious all by itself.
A chiffon cake is a cake recipe that uses oil as the fat instead of butter, and uses both a leavening agent , and whipped egg whites to gift it that super lift and soft crumb. It’s also perfect for soaking with your favorite alcohol, syrup, or flavored milk, because of the tender and fluffy crumb.
Here it’s combined with Kahlua and a Whipped Cream Vodka American buttercream to make a White Russian cake. And be aware – this cake has a hefty dose of alcohol, and none of it gets baked off, so feed to children with discretion.
This cake is also infinitely adaptable – soak it and flavor the frosting with whatever different alcohol you desire! I just advised a friend who wanted to make a Whiskey Sour cake to soak it with Bourbon, and then make a Lemon frosting, adding more splashes of Bourbon as she desires.

This milk punch was created by bartender Abigail Gullo while she was working at Sobou in New Orleans and is a mix of spiced rum, milk, simple syrup and vanilla extract , which then gets dusted with grated nutmeg and cinnamon. Creamy drinks have a long history in New Orleans, so its no surprise that this contemporary milk punch found its way onto a menu.

Suggestions And Substitutions For White Russians
It’s hard to screw up a White Russian, but follow these tips for a sure-proof drink:
- If the cream is too much for you, swap it out for whole milk or half-and-half. Avoid low-fat milk, skim milk, and non-dairy milks with a low fat content, otherwise the drink will curdle.
- Need a reliable dairy-free alternative? Use coconut milk! Here’s a recipe.
- I used a ratio of 2:1:1 vodka, cream, and Kahlua, which gives the drink a definite bite. If you want more of that overall sweet coffee flavor, with the vodka just nibbling in the background, go for a 1:1:1 ratio.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin Calls For Decisive Action In Support Of Ukraine
From CNNs Liam Reilly
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin called for decisive action aimed to support Ukraine following the Russian invasion.
Youngkin announced an immediate review of the states procurement of all goods and services involving Russian companies and called for an end to statewide sister-city partnerships with Russia, according to a statement released by his office on Saturday.
The governor directed the states General Services Department to review all contracts to ascertain whether state tax dollars are being spent on goods and services from primarily Russian companies.
The governor also called on the mayors of Norfolk and Roanoke to end their sister-city partnerships with Kaliningrad and Pskov, respectively, and urged the Virginia Retirement System and university endowments to immediately divest Russian holdings.
The invasion of Ukraine by Soviet dictator Vladimir Putin cannot stand, and the people of the Commonwealth are ready to rally in opposition to this senseless attack on a sovereign nation and western ideals, Youngkin said. Today, we are acting to show our solidarity with the Ukrainian people as they defend their country. And while these are important steps, it is incumbent upon President Biden to take a stronger, more decisive leadership position to end this war.

How Do You Make A White Russian
I tried a few different ratios while developing this recipe, and the one I landed on was the most balanced on my palate. Feel free to add more or less of whatever you prefer.
Fill an Old-Fashioned glass with ice. Add 1 1/2 ounces vodka and 1 1/2 ounces coffee liqueur and stir. Depending on how creamy you prefer your drink, pour 1/2 to 3/4 ounce cold heavy cream over the top. You can stir it in or let the cream swirl into the top when stirred, the cocktail will be beige in color.
