While its easy to assume the drink has origins in Russia, its story actually begins at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels. In 1949, a bartender named Gustav Topps created both the Black Russian and the White Russian cocktails to honor Perle Mesta, a former U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg known for throwing lavish parties for artists, politicians, and entertainers. The Russian in the title signifies the use of vodka in the cocktails.

Since then, the White Russian lived somewhat in obscurity until the 1998 movie The Big Lebowski, in which Jeffrey the Dude Lebowski is seen kicking back a White Russian in multiple scenes. Now, you cant mention the name of the cocktail without someone saying The dude abides.

When making such a simple cocktail, details do matter. So to make the best White Russian, you should use quality products, carefully measure the ratios, and keep a few other things in mind. But let’s start with the ingredients.

First and foremost, you need a solid Vodka base. If you don’t have a favorite brand: Absolut Vodka is a great choice and quite affordable. But most importantly, stay away from flavored Vodkas. Those add artificial aromas you most likely don’t want in your drink. And even more so when making it for the first time.

Next up is the coffee liqueur. For me, Kahlúa is the best choice as it is good value for money. -The delicious Mexican coffee liqueur is a staple in bars around the globe for a reason.

And the final ingredient that will turn our Black Russian into a white one is heavy cream. Some recipes replace heavy cream with lighter options like milk. But the cocktail really does depend on the rich and creamy texture heavy cream is adding. Therefore, if you mix your drink with milk, you will get something similar but not quite as tasty.

The ideal ratio strongly depends on personal preferences. But I like a 2:1:1. Two parts Vodka, one part coffee liqueur, and one part cream. Mix Vodka and coffee liqueur in a mixing glass with plenty of ice and strain into an ice-filled Old Fashioned glass. Then carefully pour over the heavy cream.

If I were to drink the spirit alone, I might look a bit further at vodkas I want to try, but we are putting this in a drink with strong flavors. There is a strong coffee flavor, and the cream brings a heaviness to this drink that would likely hide the nuances of any vodka flavor.

Reach into your liquor cabinet and grab that vodka you would use on the regular. Keep the top shelf stuff where it is.

    Last night as I was making this cake recipe , the smell wafting through my house as these cake layers were almost done in the oven was insane. And when I leveled the cakes and tasted the tops, my senses were overwhelmed. This is hands down the best white cake recipe I’ve ever had, and while it soaks up any liquid you want to add to it like a dream , it’s just simply delicious all by itself.

    A chiffon cake is a cake recipe that uses oil as the fat instead of butter, and uses both a leavening agent , and whipped egg whites to gift it that super lift and soft crumb. It’s also perfect for soaking with your favorite alcohol, syrup, or flavored milk, because of the tender and fluffy crumb.

    Here it’s combined with Kahlua and a Whipped Cream Vodka American buttercream to make a White Russian cake. And be aware – this cake has a hefty dose of alcohol, and none of it gets baked off, so feed to children with discretion.

    This cake is also infinitely adaptable – soak it and flavor the frosting with whatever different alcohol you desire! I just advised a friend who wanted to make a Whiskey Sour cake to soak it with Bourbon, and then make a Lemon frosting, adding more splashes of Bourbon as she desires.

    How Do You Make A White Russian

    I tried a few different ratios while developing this recipe, and the one I landed on was the most balanced on my palate. Feel free to add more or less of whatever you prefer.

    Fill an Old-Fashioned glass with ice. Add 1 1/2 ounces vodka and 1 1/2 ounces coffee liqueur and stir. Depending on how creamy you prefer your drink, pour 1/2 to 3/4 ounce cold heavy cream over the top. You can stir it in or let the cream swirl into the top when stirred, the cocktail will be beige in color.
