- DIY Teeth Whitening: Too Good to Be True?
To whiten teeth, use a mouth guard with 2 parts baking soda to 1 part hydrogen peroxide, 10 minutes daily for 2 weeks.
Dr. Malmstrom: Its not a good idea to use a mouth guard for whitening thats not specifically fitted for your mouth by a dentist because the hydrogen peroxide could irritate your gums. If your gums are recessed and the hydrogen peroxide touches an exposed tooth root surface, this can also cause a problem.
Another potential issue can be the amount of hydrogen peroxide used. The concentration approved as safe and effective by the FDA and ADA for tooth whitening is similar to 3.6 percent hydrogen peroxide. Since it would be extremely difficult to mix the amount of hydrogen peroxide accurately when youre using it at home, its not a good idea to try this whitening method.
Wet your toothbrush and then dip it in 1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder. Brush teeth as normal but, instead of rinsing when youre done, allow the turmeric to sit on your teeth for 3 to 5 minutes. Spit and rinse thoroughly then follow with a second brushing using your regular toothpaste.
Dr. Malmstrom: There are many studies showing how turmeric is good for you internally, but there are no studies showing turmeric to be an effective tooth whitener. I would not recommend any method that hasnt already been proven to work, as we have safe and effective techniques that have been researched.

Recipe #1 Strawberry and Baking Soda Paste
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 7-10 drops of spearmint essential oil
You want the coconut oil to be a liquid, so you need to heat it up until it becomes a liquid. Next, you want to add in the baking soda as well as the spearmint oil, and mix well into a paste.
Then simply rub the paste onto your teeth and let sit for 20-25 minutes.
The fatty acids that are found in coconut oil contain teeth whitening properties and when the oil is mixed with your saliva, these properties begin to remove stains.
The spearmint will give the paste a nice taste and act as a antimicrobial which helps promote healthier gums, which are the foundation of healthy teeth.
Lemon Juice and Baking Soda
- 1 lemon or a few tablespoons of lemon juice
- 2-3 tsp baking soda
In a bowl squeeze the juice from 1 lemon, or add a few tablespoons of lemon juice. Then mix in the baking soda until a paste is formed.

The lemon juice acts as a bleaching agent, and the baking soda will eliminate surface stains. When combined you have a good homemade teeth whitening solution.

Why Do Teeth Turn Yellow
Teeth become discolored, turning yellow or even a beige or brown color, due to stains that develop on both the hard, white surface of teeth as well as deeper within the teeths structure.
Underneath the enamel is a pale brown substance called dentin, which can become more visible when enamel gets thinner a very common occurrence for many adults. Dental erosion results from chronic loss of dental hard tissue that is chemically etched away from the tooth surface by acid and/or chelation . What are some of the reasons enamel thins? Risk factors include aging, genetics and intake of foods that promote erosion and/or staining. Many of these same unhealthy habits also increase your risk for gum disease.
While its unrealistic to expect that your teeth will remain shiny and very white into older age, many factors that accelerate the rate of teeth discoloration can be avoided.

Rub Banana Orange Or Lemon Peels:
Just like oil pulling, this remedy also doesnt have any scientific research supporting it. However, the people who gave it a shot are happy with the results. Plus, it doesnt involve any harmful chemicals, so why not?
To perform this trick, take a banana, orange, or lemon peel and gently rub it on your teeth. Keep rubbing it for about 2 minutes, then thoroughly wash your mouth and brush your teeth.
The peels of these fruits contain citric acid, which theoretically helps in teeth whitening. If youre having sensitivity issues, chances are your teeth enamel is weak or has worn off. In that case, its not recommended to use this remedy. If you have already tried and are having trouble with your teeth, visiting your dentist should be your immediate response.
Teeth Whitening Products And Other At
You can purchase over-the-counter whitening products to help with stained teeth. Unlike products administered by a dentist, these products have no carbamide peroxide, or, much less than the products dentists use. This means that if your teeth are intrinsically discolored, OTC teeth whiteners may not work as effectively or may take longer to whiten your teeth.
Some OTC products have the American Dental Associations Seal of Acceptance. Not all products have this seal, and some products without it are still fine to use, but this seal is meant to give you more confidence to make buying decisions and to ensure what youre using is safe.
Always follow the manufacturers instructions when using a product.

Lemon Juice And Baking Soda Teeth Whitener
Do baking soda and lemon juice help whiten teeth? Both baking soda and lemon juice are great teeth whitening agents, but no studies prove that a combination of both can help whiten your teeth. In fact, lemon juice contains citric acid that can be harmful to your enamel. To brighten up your smile, go through the rest of the natural ways and apply what suits you best.
Dont Underestimate The Value Of Brushing And Flossing
While some tooth discoloration naturally comes with age, its largely a result of plaque buildup.
Regularly brushing and flossing can help your teeth stay white by reducing bacteria in your mouth and preventing plaque buildup.
Toothpaste gently rubs out stains on your teeth, and flossing removes bacteria that lead to plaque.
Regular dental cleanings can also help your teeth stay clean and white.
Summary Daily brushing and flossing, along with regular cleanings at the dentists office, prevent the buildup of yellowing plaque on your teeth.
There are a few other natural teeth whitening methods, but there is no scientific evidence to prove that they are safe or effective.
Some of the unproven methods include:
- Activated charcoal. Brushing with powdered charcoal supposedly pulls toxins from the mouth and removes stains from teeth.
- Kaolin clay. Proponents of this method claim that brushing with clay helps remove stains from teeth.
- Fruit peels. Rubbing orange, lemon, or banana peels on your teeth is claimed to make them whiter.
- Apple cider vinegar. There is no evidence that using vinegar as a mouthwash helps whiten your teeth. On the contrary, it weakens the enamel and promotes tooth decay.
Advocates of these methods claim they make teeth significantly whiter, but no studies have evaluated their effectiveness. This also means that they have not been tested for side effects when used on teeth.
