The first Chex Party Mix recipe contained no Cheerios , no bagel chips, no pretzels, and no seasoned salt. I know! Heresy! But if you mix up a batch of this mix, youll taste the true flavor of the 1950s party table. And you might find that you like it better.

The original recipe calls for 1/3 cup butter, 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 2 cups Wheat Chex, 2 cups Rice Chex, 1/2 cup nuts, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt. Melt the butter in a baking pan, and mix in the Worcestershire sauce, Chex cereals, and nuts. Sprinkle with the salt and garlic salt, and then roast in the oven at 300 degrees for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.

Yes, this makes a tiny amount. After stirring together 8-9 cups of cereal, plus a cup of nuts, a cup of pretzels, and so on, a four cup batch seems hardly worth the effort. But it cooks in half the time, and it was designed for one party or one evening, not a weeks worth of Chex Mix in a large container in the pantry. This small recipe was probably designed to serve 8 people. The ad doesnt say.

  • 130 mg per tsp of The Wizards organic GF and corn free vegan Worcestershire. The standard recipes call for 2 Tbsp, not tsp.

And if you think the organic Chex cereal knock-offs are healthier, think again. In fact, many are worse!

Cascadian Farms organic multigrain squares have 190 mg sodium per cup and 7 grams of sugar . Plus, Cascadian is wheat based. There arent even good organic alternative brands on the market for this product.

On that note, is organic food healthier? Read that analysis. Given the short half-lives for most herbicides, its probably not worth it for cereal unless you insist on non GMO. But consider the trade-off, because as you will see in the aforementioned analysis, ironically many of the healthy and expensive brands often have more sugar and more sodium than their conventional counterparts.

Place puffed rice, Chex cereal, Chinese noodles and peanuts in large shallow baking pan. Combine butter and onion soup mix. Pour over cereal mixture, tossing until all ingredients are coated. Heat in preheated very slow oven about 40 minutes. Stirring occasionally. Makes about 12 cups.

Wheat Chex cereal was introduced in 1937 and Rice Chex in 1950 by Ralston Purina.

In 1952 an advertisement for Chex party mix appeared in Life Magazine with a recipe that included Wheat and Rice Chex.

In 1958 Corn Chex was introduced and added to the recipe. However, it was not until 1985 that pre-packaged products were introduced commercially by Ralston Purina and the trademarks registered to it.

Not surprisingly, it began with the invention of Wheat Chex cereal by Ralston Purina in the late 1930s, only then the cereal was known as Shredded Ralston. The name was officially changed in 1950, the same year Rice Chex was introduced. The word chex was a play on the red and white checkerboard logo that Purina still uses today.

Its likely that versions of party mix were enjoyed throughout the late 1930s and 1940s, but Ralston Purina didnt begin publishing their official party mix recipe until 1952. It included both kinds of Chex and nuts, tossed in a combination of Worcestershire sauce, butter, garlic salt, and salt. Everything was mixed together and baked in the oven at a low temperature, then cooled and stored until ready for munching. When Corn Chex arrived on the scene in 1958, it quickly joined the party .

What’s The Story Behind This Recipe

At Christmastime back when I was a child, my mother’s best friend Mrs Houston would make a giant batch of Nuts & Bolts and give our family a big bag of it.

The only problem with Mrs. Houston’s homemade Chex mix was, no matter how big the bag was she gave us, there was never enough. Spicy, smokey, and perfectly seasoned, I could have crunched through handful after handful for breakfast, lunch, and late night snack and still not have had enough.

Many years ago when I preparing for first Christmas in my own apartment, I decided I needed to make some old-fashioned Chex Mix to welcome the holiday season. So, being young and hopeful, I went to the grocery store and bought one of those little Chex Mix seasoning packets.

All I can say is, the premixed seasoning didn’t even compare.

Luckily, Mrs Houston was still living at the time, so I asked her for the recipe. I wrote it down on a little recipe card, and have since then guarded the card like Charlie’s golden ticket, taking it out each November to make the annual batch of our favorite old-fashioned party mix.

1 cup broken pretzel sticks or peanuts


Melt butter in an electric skillet at 200 F. Stir in seasonings. Blend well. Add Chex and pretzels or peanuts. Mix until all pieces are coated. Cover skillet, leaving lid vents open. Heat at 250° for 15 minutes. Stir midway. Cool on absorbent paper.

NOTE: A large skillet on the range top may be used. After pieces are coated with butter and seasoning, heat and stir for 10 minutes over low heat: then cool.

How To Butter It Up Or Not

Eating fat wont make you fat, but excess calories will. Butter and vegan equivalents have 100 to 110 calories per tablespoon a lot of calories for very little satiability.

To be blunt, youre getting absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever from the butters and dairy free alternatives. Sure, they taste good because theyre pure fat. Aside from that, youre not getting much antioxidant value, protein, or really anything else worthwhile.

Really, all its doing is adding a high amount of calories. And at Christmastime especially, none of us need that.

You can reduce the amount of butter by using more Worcestershire and water.

Water? Yes, thats right. When youre mixing everything together, it will make the cereal and pretzels soggy, but dont worry. After you bake it, you wont be able to tell the difference because the water will have evaporated .

To use 50% less butter

  • Use 3 tablespoons of butter per batch instead of 6
  • Add 3 tablespoons of water
  • Add more Worcestershire, the extra amount depends on your taste preference. Though as a rule of thumb, too much is almost enough.

Recipe without butter

  • Begin with 6 tablespoons of water. Dont be scared to add more if needed, but its best to do so after you mix in the spices and Worcestershire, so you can better gauge how much you need.
  • Add more Worcestershire according to your taste preference.

You cant call the butter free version a low fat recipe since you still have the nuts, but it is a huge improvement.

Healthier While Respecting The Original

Well, the first residential microwave didnt even hit the market til 1967, so we dont know why they claim this is how to make The Original Chex Party Mix.

Maybe they just assume people are too lazy to bake these days so theyre dumbing down.

Low calorie Chex Mix would be a bit like making sugar free cotton candy its just not going to work. However using these tricks, you can make it a lot better. Some would even say our mix without butter is good for you, but we will refrain from that label.
