Protein: can be some form of cheese, avocado, or eggs. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends early introduction of allergenic foods to prevent food allergies.
Soft fruits including bananas, pears, peaches, watermelon, cantaloupe, and berries.
Some ideas to consider:
- Cook until bottom of tortilla is brown and cheese starts to melt
- Cover with other tortilla and flip, cook until other side is brown.
Once your baby can eat smaller bites, consider adding beans, spinach, avocado, or ham to the quesadillas.

Half a boiled egg, half a slice of buttered toast and a few slices of kiwi
Spinach and cheese omelette & half an English muffin
Oat pancakes with chopped strawberries on the side

Ideas For When Your Baby Is A Proficient Eater Around 10
At this stage, your baby will have mastered the pincer grip which is where she uses her thumb and forefinger to pick up foods. Her dexterity will be better too meaning you can offer smaller pieces of food. This is great in terms of mastering hand-eye coordination.
She may be crawling or cruising and wants to be on the move meaning shell be frustrated when restrained in her highchair. If this happens, let her out but never let her eat outside of the highchair. She doesn’t yet have the skills to do this which means that eating on the move puts her at greater risk of choking. Once out the chair, if she indicates that she wants food, pop her back in explaining that eating happens in the highchair, Shell soon cotton on.
If your baby has teeth you can start to offer crunchy al dente foods like steamed veggies, if she cant yet manage these textures shell gag and spit them out.
Gagging is completely normal and your baby has to do do this in order to learn how to move food around her mouth. If she doesn’t yet have teeth avoid crunchier foods as theyre still a choking hazard.

It may take up to 10 tries, or even more, for your child to get used to new foods, flavour and textures.
Be patient and keep offering a variety of fruits and vegetables, including ones with bitter flavours such as broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and cabbage.
Try to make sure fruits and vegetables are included in every meal.
Try these ways to help your child eat more fruit and vegetables:
- give carrot sticks, cucumber stick or slices of pepper with hummus as a snack
- give apple slices with smooth peanut butter as a snack
- mix chopped or mashed vegetables with rice, mashed potatoes, meat sauces or dhal
- add vegetables to classic savoury dishes such as cottage or shepherd’s pie, spaghetti bolognese or casseroles
- chop prunes or dried apricots into cereal or plain, unsweetened yoghurt, or add them to a stew
- for a tasty dessert, try mixing fruit with plain, unsweetened yoghurt.
Quick Breakfast Idea #1: Sweet Potato Toast
Mix up toast with a dose of veggies by spreading mashed roasted sweet potato onto toast and sprinkle with a little cinnamon. Drizzle on nut butter or pair with a smear of cream cheese to take it even further. Cut into cubes or sticks as needed for a breakfast idea for a 1 year old or 2 year old. You can of course also top toast with mashed avocado, nut or seed butter and jam, apple butter, or any other topping your kiddo enjoys.

Drinks For Babies And Young Children
From around 6 months, breast milk and first infant formula should continue to be your baby’s main drink.
Whole cows’ milk can be used in cooking or mixed with food from around 6 months but shouldn’t be given as a drink until they are 12 months old. Whole milk should be given to children until they are 2 years old, as they need the extra energy and vitamins it contains.
Semi-skimmed milk can be introduced once your child is 2 years old, as long as they are a good eater and they have a varied diet.
Skimmed and 1% milk are not suitable for children under 5 years old, as they do not contain enough calories.
Sugary squashes, flavoured milk, “fruit” or “juice” drinks and sugary fizzy drinks can cause tooth decay, even when diluted. These drinks can also fill your child up so they’re not hungry for healthier food. Instead, offer sips of water from a cup with meals.
Breakfast Ideas For Babies At 6 Months
Here are my top 10 nutritious baby led weaning breakfast starter foods, suitable from 6 months at the start of weaning:
Buttered wholemeal toast
Eggs – any which way – try hard boiled, scrambled or omelette cut into strips
Almond butter thinned with a little of your babys usual milk and spread on rice cakes
Wholemeal English muffin spread with a soft cheese like Philadelphia and cut in half
Cubes of cheese
Chia pudding with blitzed berries – yes it is OK to give your baby a spoon and see what happens!
