How To Use The Easiest Recipe Calorie Calculator

Meat-Lite Meatloaf (Healthy Recipes) | MyFitnessPal

Update: The old website, caloriecount.about.com is being shut down and rolled into their new site, VeryWell.com, which introduced a new version of the same tool. I updated the post below with the new links and screenshots.

Some of the most common questions I get about my recipes are about calculating nutrition information. How many calories does this soup have? or, how many grams of fat are in these cookies?

Up until now, my answer has always been something like, I dunno because this is a much more complicated question than it seems. While there are countless websites and mobile apps designed to help you calculate nutrition for different ingredients, thats not too helpful for entire recipes. Finding the grams of fat in one serving of my Sesame Rice Bowl, for example, is no trivial matter First, youd have to look up the fat in brown rice. And then sun-dried tomatoes. And then a few slices of cucumber. Each of these ingredients would then need to be written down, divided by weird fractions for each serving, and then added together. The end result would still be a rough estimate and you would have to start at the beginning for calories, carbs, sodium, and more until your calculator catches fire and you throw your hands up in frustration.

Calculating nutrition facts by hand is an absolute nightmare.

Myfitnesspal Is The Calorie

Whether you’re trying to lose weight, testing a more mindful lifestyle, or a living, breathing human being, you need to test this calorie-counting app for at least a week. The autofill fields make it easy to input your meals and snacks, and the ensuing calorie revelations will turn you into a more conscious eater.

Best For Vegetarians: Forks Over Knives

Forks Over Knives

Why We Chose It: In addition to being a great resource for those who already embrace vegetarian and vegan diets, Forks Over Knives is an excellent gateway meal planner app for omnivores who are looking to add more plant-based meals.

ProsFlexible enough for curious omnivoresWeekend Prep streamlines cooking and prep workConsExpensiveOnly connects to one grocery shopping service

Tied to the 2011 documentary and a New York Times bestselling book “Forks Over Knives,” this meal planning app focuses on a whole-food, plant-based diet. Loading up on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, tubers, and other starchy vegetables is encouraged. Nuts, seeds, tofu, plant-based milk, tofu and tempeh, and whole-grain bread can be enjoyed in moderation. A plant-based diet is the goal, but the movement recommends minimizing rather than altogether forbidding meat, poultry, and seafood, along with eggs, dairy, oils, and other more processed foods like refined sweeteners, white rice, pasta, and bread.

The app features hundreds of plant-based recipes designed by professional chefs that are meant to be prepared in 35 minutes or less. Each week, the app sends you a customized meal plan and recipes all you have to do is shop, prep, cook, and eat.

Best For Meal Preppers: Mealpreppro

MealPrepPro

  • Complying with suggested plan takes time

MealPrepPro is designed for people who want to cook large batches of healthy food so they just have to heat and eat later in the week. The recipes are quick to make and designed for you to make a big batch one day, and then youll eat it for several days after. Sure its repetitive, but if youre watching what you eat and dont have a lot of time, youll always have a healthy meal waiting for you. If youd rather cook fresh every day, or cook an even bigger batch to freeze, you can set the app to do that too.

Set up your preferences according to your diet and either let the app determine your macro goals based on your health stats or you can set them manually. The app will create a weekly plan of lunch and dinner from its collection of recipes. While the app focuses on lunch and dinner, you can easily add breakfast and snacks.

You can customize the plan if you want. Itll even offer suggestions if you want to swap out a dish with something else. The recipes are easy to follow with step-by-step videos, but theyre made for one or two people, so if youre feeding a family youll have to increase the serving size to scale up. You can also add your own recipes. The plan generates an organized shopping list, and you can cross things off as you pick them up.

The app syncs with Apple Health and the Apple Watch, so you can keep track of your calories/macros, water consumption and follow the shopping list from your wrist.

Best For Families: Cozi

Cozi

Why We Chose It: The app is good for more than recipes and groceries it’s also a family organizational app that handles calendars, chore-tracking, and more.

ProsThe apps keep screen on functionConsLimited number of recipes within the appClunky to transfer ingredients to grocery lists

Cozi, which was started by former employees of Microsoft and Amazon, has been around since 2005 and has over 20 million users. Designed as a family organizing app, it also includes recipe planner and grocery list features. The basic version of the app, available on iOS, Android, Mac, and PC, is free. A premium version, Cozi Gold, is $29.99 per year and is ad-free, offers a calendar search and birthday tracker, and more.

The fact that the app helps you organize more than your cooking schedule makes it feel like you’re getting your moneys worth. Recipe-wise, the app is a bit bare-bones, but its easy enough to add recipes from websites and even upload your own to the recipe box. One especially nice feature is the keep screen on function, which ensures your device’s screen doesn’t go dark while youre cooking.

Making The Most Of The Recipe Nutrition Analyzer

The nutrition facts label is useful if you’re tracking calories or just want to be more informed about your diet, but this recipe calculator is also helpful for making smarter food decisions.

Here are a few tips for how to make the most of it.

  • Ingredient swaps: Take a look at the calorie breakdown for individual ingredients if you’d like to adjust the calorie content of your recipe. Knowing where the calories are coming from can help you pinpoint specific ingredients to swap out or adjust quantities for.
  • Ingredient comparisons: How much of a difference will using whole milk versus low-fat milk make? Analyze a recipe with one ingredient, then edit it to use the second and compare the nutrition facts.
  • Recipe comparisons: Analyze multiple recipes and compare the nutrition labels to help you decide which is better for your diet and specific nutritional needs.

The estimated price for developing a cooking recipe app may cost a minimum of $3000. As the app design and features become complex, the price goes higher. It can be as much as $12000.

The cost to develop an app depends on many factors, like the features needed, functionality, size, design, and platform. All have a say on how much creating an app may cost.

Aside from these, the cost of each app depends on whether its made for Android or iOS. Customer Reviews From Amazoncom

Several years back I was looking for a way to consolidate all of my recipe cards, magazine tear outs and post it note scribbles not only for my own personal use but also to leave a legacy for my children and grandchildren of all those family favorites. Little did I know that these innovative people at DVO would keep their creative juices flowing right into the age of iPhone/Android Apps!! I can now access my recipes on my phone across the country, on my netbook in my kitchen, and everywhere in between. If you are afraid that you are not ready for computerized cookbooks, not to worry, just contact DVO customer service and they will talk you through anything you need to know. Can’t say enough about this wonderful product and the customer service that comes with it!
