Dairy Free Cream Cheese
If youre looking for a vegan substitute to cream cheese, there are plenty of dairy free cream cheese options on the market. You can also make homemade vegan cream cheese if you dont want to buy packaged products. Both options work great, but there are few simple things to keep in mind when using cream cheese replacements in recipes.
Regular Versus Dairy Free Cream Cheese
Now Im going to give you a little truth up front if youre expecting Philadelphia, this isnt it. I have yet to find a substitute, homemade or store bought, which tastes exactly like your standard dairy-based cream cheese.
But now, the good news! This spread is rich, tangy, savory, and tastes absolutely delicious. Aside from eating it just slathered on a bagel, I make this awesome vegan bagel sandwich that includes this spread along with avocado, cucumber, scallions, spinachits insanely good.
Im going to venture to say this homemade version is way better than most of the cream cheese alternatives you find at the store both as far as flavor and nutrition. Some of the store-bought varieties are filled with odd ingredients, and many have a strange, almost artificial taste to them.

Use Nondairy Milk And Vegan Shortening
Veganbaking.net says homemade or commercial vegan shortening combined with powdered sugar and your choice of nondairy milk makes a quick, creamy lactose-free replacement for regular cream cheese frosting. Plan on using 1/2 cup of shortening and 2 tablespoons of nondairy milk for every 1 cup of powdered sugar. For a flavor mimicking that of regular cream cheese, stir in some apple cider vinegar, vanilla extract and lemon juice. A 2-cup batch of the frosting would require about 1 teaspoon of vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon of extract and 1/4 teaspoon of juice.

Can I Buy Dairy
Absolutely! Before learning how to make homemade, my favorite store bought vegan cream cheeses were kite hill and Miyokos. Kite hill has a variety of flavors and is my #1. Miyokos plain is tangy and great when you want that extra zing.

How To Make Vegan Cream Cheese
Making vegan cream cheese only takes a few simple steps:
- Soak cashews. Soften the cashews by soaking them in hot water for 10 minutes. Alternately, soak them for 2 3 hours in cool water. Cashews dont need any longer than 3 hours to soak but will be fine if soaked overnight. Soaking also aids in digestion and is good for those with sensitivities.
- Blend. Add the ingredients to the blender cup and process until creamy, stopping to scrape down the sides every now and then. Taste for flavor, adding more lemon or apple cider vinegar for more tang.
- Eat as is or chill. Serve right away or keep in the refrigerator to chill and thicken even more.
Substitute Vegan Cream Cheese
Commercial brands of vegan cream cheese typically contain coconut, soybean and sunflower oils, soy protein concentrate, nondairy lactic acid and thickeners such as guar gum and locust bean gum. Some also include trans fats in the form of partially hydrogenated oils, points out the Organic Consumers Association. Choose a trans fat-free brand or make your own lactose-free and preservative-free version from extra-firm silken tofu, cashew butter, lemon juice and salt. Use the same amount of lactose-free cream cheese as the regular cream cheese called for in your recipe.

The filling can differ slightly depending on flavour, but a majority of my recipes support the idea that if you use 500g of cream cheese, some icing sugar, and 300ml of cream, you can get a cheesecake.
Miyokos Organic Cultured Vegan Cream Cheese
Miyokos Organic Vegan Cream Cheese is a close substitute to cream cheese, and it is non-dairy. Miyokos Organic Cultured Vegan Cream Cheese is our top pick. As always, make sure you check all of the labels on your products to ensure they dont contain milk solids or milk products in the ingredients.
For Chive And Onion Vegan Cream Cheese:
While the cream cheese is quite good plain, it is SO much better with more flavor. Simply add 3 tablespoons of chopped chives and a teaspoon of onion powder to the cream cheese, and process until smooth. SO GOOD.
You could also get creative with different add-ins, such as sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, chipotles in adobo or maple walnut.

Go Veggie Vegan Cream Cheese Alternative
Go Veggie Vegan Cream Cheese is made using coconut oil, sunflower oil, soy protein, and various additives to improve taste and texture. Like others on the list, it contains gums and natural flavors. In addition, it contains tricalcium phosphate, an additive used to prevent clumping. This additive has been deemed safe but is an indicator that the product is highly processed. Because its made using coconut oil, this brand is relatively higher in saturated fat compared to other cream cheese alternatives.
Daiya Cream Cheese Style Spread
Daiya dairy-free cream cheeses are made using a variety of ingredients such as coconut oil, coconut cream, plant-based proteins, and natural starches to enhance texture. Like other dairy-free cream cheeses, Daiya also uses various gums in their products. Depending on the type of cream cheese, real-food ingredients such as herbs and spices are used for flavor. However, they also use natural vegan flavors, a much more ambiguous additive.

Just throw the ingredients into the food processor or high-speed blender. Thats basically it! Homemade vegan cream cheese is ready!
This recipe is best for crackers, bagels, toast, and other savory snacks. Its not as smooth as store-bought cream cheese because no oil is added. So, if youre needing a super smooth cream cheese for frosting, this might not be the most suitable.

When I made this lactose free cream cheese first, I topped it onto toasted English muffins, I could not stop eating. I was almost reaching the third one but stopped.
Recipe: How To Make Dairy
I love this Paleo cream cheese recipe!
Its so simple and versatile, the perfect addition to your next breakfast. Its free of inflammatory gluten, dairy, and soy, which is great news for your health. Its also a great option for anyone with nut allergies.
And as with all my favorite recipes, you have tons of options to customize it and make it your own!
Youll notice one of the choices in the recipe is to add nutritional yeast. Nutritional yeast gives it a savory, cheesy flavor that makes it perfect for wraps or melted into gluten-free, corn-free pasta.
Nutritional yeast has a lot of health benefits, including fiber and B vitamins. However, it causes tummy upset for some folks, so test it out first to be sure it agrees with you.
You can dial up the savory notes even more by adding 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder and 2 teaspoons of freeze-dried chives to your cream cheese. The garlicky onion flavor makes it the perfect dip for fresh veggies or lentil chips.
Or take it in a totally different direction! Leave out the nutritional yeast and stir in 2 tablespoons of chopped organic strawberries or blueberries and a dash of JJ Virgin Sprinkles.
Then use your fruity cream cheese to top a gluten-free English muffin, Paleo Pancakes, or stir 2 tablespoons into your next smoothie for some healthy fats!
No matter what version you make or how you use it, youre going to come back to this quick, adaptable recipe again and again!

Go For Coconut Oil And Yogurt
If you want to avoid the soy used in a number of commercial dairy-free products, try preparing your frosting from a combination of coconut yogurt and oil, suggests cookbook author Danielle Rouse. Rouse advises blending equal parts coconut oil, coconut yogurt and coconut cream — the cream found at the top of a can of regular coconut milk — with ground vanilla and maple syrup as flavoring. Then refrigerate the mixture until it has reached the desired consistency. Other types of plant-based yogurts, such as almond-milk yogurt, can be used in place of the coconut yogurt.

Our Favorite Vegan Cream Cheese Brands
First choice: Violife. This is hands down our favorite. I think it tastes the most like real cream cheese, and it seems to work better in recipes like cream cheese frosting and creamy dips, like my Skyline chili dip.
Second choice: Daiya. This seems to be more readily available, and its my second favorite for that reason. I find that it has a slight fake taste to it, but its still better than most Ive tried.

Why Make Your Own Cream Cheese
I know thats probably a question that some of you are asking, and I actually have the perfect answer. Because homemade cream cheese is SO much better and Im not just saying that.
Im not just talking about taste and texture either. Now, obviously I havent tried EVERY cream cheese out there but last time I was at the store I decided to have a look at the ingredients list of some of the biggest brands of cream cheese here in the UK.
What I found was E ingredients, gums and thickeners including the controversial carrageenan! Homemade cream cheese simply uses lemon juice, milk and salt and is still wonderfully smooth and creamy.

How To Use Cashew Cream Cheese
Ive also been using it in recipes that call for regular cream cheese, and so far its worked in everything Ive tried including this Vegan Cheesecake Recipe!
And while it definitely doesnt taste exactly like Philadelphia cream cheese , you can use it in many of the same ways as you would regular cream cheese.
Try it plain, or Ive also listed three variations of the basic recipe below because why eat plain cream cheese when you can have strawberry!?
