How To Make French Onion Spinach Dip

When a recipe only has 4 ingredients, you know the directions are going to be just as short. This is an easy one, so Ill get right to the point for you.

Cream Cheese: Youre going to need the full, 8 ounce block of cream cheese. Just make sure its softened before you go to mix the ingredients so it blends better. Especially if youre going to serve it cold.

Spinach: I always use a box of frozen spinach. It comes in a 10 ounce block. About an hour or two before I make the recipe, I open the box of frozen spinach and place it in a colander in the sink to thaw. When its completely thawed, use your hands to squeeze out any extra water. Frozen spinach really holds a lot of excess moisture so make sure you squeeze it out so your dip isnt watery.

Sour Cream: You can use full fat, reduced fat or fat free sour cream. Any of them will work for this recipe.

French Onion Soup Mix: I usually use the store brand French Onion Soup mix. Just one packet, dry for this recipe.

How To Make It

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

Heat diced onions in melted butter and olive oil over medium heat for 5 minutes.

Add soy sauce, garlic salt, onion powder, pepper, and thyme.

Add softened cream cheese to a bowl.

Combine the cream cheese with sour cream . Add caramelized onions. If possible, refrigerate for at least 1 hour prior to serving.

Directions To Make Spinach Dip:

Its really as simple as mixing all your ingredients in a large bowl until theyre well combined.

You can either serve this dip cold or heat it up in a 350 degree oven for about 20-25 minutes until its hot the whole way through.

I like to take a round loaf of bread and hollow out the center, fill it with dip and serve it that way. If you remove the center of the bread carefully enough, you can cube up the extra bread pieces as your dippers too! Tortilla chips also go well with this healthy spinach dip.

If you do serve it this way and want to heat it through, just cover the outside of the bread loaf with foil so it doesnt get hard and dried out.

  • In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together until well combined.
  • To serve: You can serve this dip cold and enjoy immediately.Or you can heat at 350 degrees for about 20-25 minutes until heated through.

What Is French Onion Dip

Homemade French Onion Dip Recipe

French Onion Dip isnt French at all, but rather an American concoction which is typically made with sour cream, dried onion, and herbs. A super quick way to make it is by mixing together some sour cream and a packet of onion soup mix > This is what kids of the 70s grew up on Ive also made it with caramelized onions, which is truly amazing especially for anyone who loves French Onion Soup or Onion Jam but to me, that is a completely different dip and not at all like the dip of my childhood.

So, what if you dont want all the preservatives that come in the pre-packaged stuff, or lack time and motivation thats required to caramelize onions for 45 minutes? Ive got you. This homemade French Onion Dip recipe is the perfect compromise, which tastes like the store bought mix, but made from scratch. Ready in only 5 minutes with only 6 ingredients.

There are many recipes for onion dip French onion dip, sour cream and onion dip, onion dip, etc., so what makes French Onion Dip different? French Onion Dip is meant to taste like French Onion Soup by using a packet of French Onion Soup mix, which is made of dried onion flakes, onion powder, paprika, parsley, pepper and the key ingredientbeef bouillon!

Many homemade French Onion Dips try and mimic the beefy flavor with Worcestershire sauce but it pales in comparison. Beef bouillon is the secret ingredient your lackluster dips have been missing. Hints For An Amazing French Onion Dip

Choosing to make this dip for your next event is definitely a step in the right direction. You just cant go wrong with all the flavor and creaminess. Its going to be a quick favorite.

  • What Onions Should I Use? Any onion will do for this recipe. Use yellow, white or even a sweet onion. Its really up to you on this one.
  • How small do I chop the Onion? There are two ways to go about the chopping. You dont want large stringy onion chunks for a dip, itll be hard to eat. I chopped my onion before caramelizing it. This also quickens the cooking time for the caramelization. You can also slice and caramelize the onion then chop them, although it might be tougher to cut them nicely.
  • What do I serve with this dip? The most common and beloved thing to serve this with is a ruffled plain potato chip. But you can also serve it with crackers, pretzels, crusty bread and pita chips. It also goes perfectly with a vegetable tray of carrots, celery, olives, sugar snap peas, peppers or grape tomatoes.

How To Make French Onion Dip From Scratch

Gather your ingredients and mix them in a small mixing bowl. That’s it! It’s simple, I know, but here’s the tip for the best French onion dip:

Cover and refrigerate your dip overnight. The flavors ‘marry’ and combine better after refrigerating. It totally makes sense, your dried onion takes in the moisture from the sour cream and releases the wonderful onion flavor!

In addition, all of the seasonings get a chance to release their flavors into the sour cream base as well.

Alternatives to sour cream that can be used include cream cheese, mayonnaise, and unflavored yogurt . All of these creamy bases will add their distinctive amount of tanginess to the dip. You can also combine any of these with sour cream or with each other to customize your onion dip flavors!

Great stir-in ideas include a touch of Dijon mustard or ground mustard powder, a splash of Worcestershire sauce, a pinch of paprika, some freshly squeezed lemon juice, fresh chopped chives, or a little bit of finely grated cheese.

Whichever base you use, or stir-ins you’d love to try, I promise that your party-going friends will devour this creamy onion dip! Or just snack with it on your own while curled up on the couch watching a movie! You can even enjoy my tangy French onion dip with some carrots and celery and call it diet food…

How To Serve French Onion Dip

Hands down, the BEST thing to dip in Onion Dip is plain crinkle cut potato crisps. This is an American thing that hasnt yet made it across the waters.

And it might sound strange to some people, dunking potato crisps in dip.

But trust me. For French Onion Dip, plain potato crisps are the BEST. Better than corn chips, better than crackers, better than bread. It beats em all! Nagi x

French Onion Dip Ingredients

Theres just a handful of ingredients in this recipe and a few potential variations, which Ill mention below:

  • Sour Cream: I always buy organic sour cream for the highest quality, but its up to you.
  • Mayonnaise: My mom always added a little mayo in her French onion dip recipe so thats what I do as well. And you cant beat homemade mayonnaise for freshness.
  • Caramelized Onions: Golden and sweet caramelized onions add so much flavor. Pro tip: you can make these ahead of time.
  • Chives: Fresh chives are finely chopped for little flecks of green goodness.
  • Parsley: Because more greens and herbs are always better.
  • Salt and Pepper: Which you can season to your liking

A creamy dip with an intensely onion flavored base. A splash of lemon juice adds some brightness while a bit of Worcestershire sauce gives it a meaty, umami-ful backbone. Looking to up the umami factor even more, I decided to also add a touch of grated Parmesan cheese.

  • 3 large yellow onions, finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 ounce finely grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon finely sliced chives

What Ive Learned About Organic Dairy

My rule of thumb about eating organic is something Gary Hirshberg, the founder of Stonyfield Yogurt said to me, You dont have to eat all organic all of the time, but choose at least some organic to eat most of the time.

This past fall I traveled to Vermont to visit some of the organic dairy farms where Stonyfield Yogurt gets its organic milk that makes their organic yogurt. And I must say, it was impressive.

Dr. Pete Miller, co-owner of Miller Farm, and Gary Hirshfield, co-founder Stonyfield Yogurt

Its impressive not only by the standards of how hard multi-generational dairy farmers work but as Dr. Pete Miller, of Miller Farm said, Organic isnt just what we dont do, its about what we do do. Its a philosophy, and much more about the overall health of the soil and of the animals.

Theres a tide turning for the better in farming, and its turning thanks to organic farming.

Where organic dairy farms differ from conventional is these farmers work from the ground up, treating our environment and food sources with the respect and kindness they deserve.

It takes three years to convert a farm from a conventional farm to be recognized as organic. It takes that long to reverse fields saturated with chemicals and pesticides to pesticide-free. Its one big reason organic milk costs 100% more than conventional milk, but heres why organic dairy makes sense:

Thats why when it comes to milk and yogurt, Im happy to choose organic when I can.

French Onion Dip Is A Simple And Tasty Party Dip Made Using French Onion Soup Mix With Only A Handful Of Ingredients And A Few Minutes Of Prep This Will Become Your Go

French Onion Dip, or sour cream and onion dip, has always been a staple appetizer of so many picnics, parties and game days. Sometimes homemade, sometimes from a plastic tub at the store, but almost always at the party.

While I dont mind munching on the store bought variety, we all know homemade party dips are much betterand this French onion dip is so easy that it basically takes less work than going to the store for the already prepared kind!

This is a sour cream and onion dip using French onion soup mix. While you can use a store-bought packet, I highly recommend using a homemade mix. Its easy to make and keep on hand for recipes like this and usually more flavorful than a packet from the store.

The Worcestershire sauce is the secret ingredient in this French Onion Dip recipe. While I know of people who will whip this up using only the French onion soup mix and sour cream, I find that to be a little boring and by just adding a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce. So much extra flavor is added.

This party dip literally takes 3 minutes to prepare its THAT easy! Just remember to prepare it a few hours before party time as it should refrigerate for 2-3 hours. If youre short on time, its also a great dip to put together the night before.

Kettle cooked potato chips are my go-to for party dips like this one because I love the crunch and subtle flavor but of course you can serve this French onion dip with your favorite chip.

I really dont think Im a food snob hey, Im that person who has confessed to doing the KFC and Maccers drive through of shame. But I was brought up with food made from scratch and my mother ended up doing a great job of brain washing me because I never use store bought packet mixes or recipe bases. It just doesnt taste right to me, it has an edge of artificial-ness, and usually they are too salty.

This French Onion Dip is the one exception to my rule.

Its made using French Onion Soup mix. And I love it. I dont care what anyone says. And I bet my mum would love this too!

Even though it starts with a packet soup mix, this is still way better than French Onion Dip bought in a tub. For one thing, its really soft French Onion Dip sold in tubs are usually quick thick unless left out to soften. And it tastes less artificial than store bought dip.
