SIDECAR RECIPE | Triple Sec vs Cointreau vs Grand Marnier vs Curaçao | Rob’s Home Bar

We decided to try our Homemade Amaretto to make this sidecar cocktail because we just love the flavor that it brings to drink recipes. Not too sweet and a light almond flavor that compliments the orange liquor in this cocktail recipe. You can use Cointreau or Grand Marnier or Triple Sec. Triple sec bring the least expensive of the three but all will work just fine in this classic drink.

Ingredients For This Amaretto Sidecar

There are a few options when it comes to making this Amaretto Sidecar, here are the ingredients we chose to use!

Amaretto: We used our homemade amaretto but there are many good brands to choose from at the store if youre not into making your own.

Cointreau: An orange flavored liquor made in France thats used in a lot of cocktail recipes. Besides the orange flavor and smell, the liquor is clear in color.

Fresh lemon juice: Fresh lemon juice is a must when youre making a drink like this sidecar cocktail that only has a few ingredients. The tartness from the lemon juice will help to balance some of the sweet flavors in this drink.

Cointreau Vs Grand Marnier: Their Similarities

Before delving deeper into their differences, lets first discuss the similarities they share. For starters, both Cointreau and Grand Marnier are types of triple sec and popular brands of orange liqueur. To put it simply, these two are alcoholic beverages with orange and sugary elements. Moreover, both drinks originated in France in the 1880s and have an ABV of 40 percent.

Where This Recipe Came From

To my knowledge, no one has published this exact sidecar recipe. But I am borrowing and combining various elements from several recipes that already exist, and I should give credit where its due.

The ratio/structure was mostly inspired by Death & Co.s Cocktail Codex, although that books recipe calls for different brandy, orange liqueur, and a lighter syrup.

The cognac split base and Grand Marnier I took from Franky Marshalls superb rendition. Marshalls 8:3:3 + syrup structure is somewhat different than mine, but it was the first Sidecar I was ever truly impressed by, and for a long time it was my go-to recipe. If theres ever a version I worry might just be better than mine, this is it.

Finally, Joaquin Simos excellent version helped me understand how much you could improve the drink just by adding some rich syrup.

For those looking to understand how much small adjustments can change a relatively set-in-stone classic, I recommend making and comparing several or even all of these versions. Possibly you will even find one you like better than mine. All of the versions above have something good and interesting to offer.

    The classic Sidecar is perhaps the most iconic cognac cocktail in the world. Its thought to have originated from Harrys New York Bar in Paris and features a light, bright mix of cognac, Grand Marnier, lemon juice, and simple syrup. To learn more about this crowd-pleasing drink, we chatted with Jordan Bushell, the head of mixology and brand education at Hennessy U.S.

    The cocktail itself may be based on a Brandy Crusta, which was created in New Orleans at the Jewel of the South bar in 1840, Bushell says. Regardless of the influence of the Crusta, many believe it was created at the famous Harrys New York Bar in Paris for an army captain who rode up to the bar in the sidecar of a motorcycle. There is a strong possibility if they did not create it, they were familiar with the recipe, as it is mentioned in the cocktail book Harrys ABC of Mixing Cocktails. London laid claim to the cocktail just after the end of World War I with a similar story about the army captain and his bike, substituting Harrys Bar for the Bucks Club.

    Cognac is a type of brandy that is double-distilled from white grapes and can only be made in Cognac, France. This means that all cognacs are brandies, but not all brandies are cognacs. This double-distillation process yields a brandy that is technically referred to as eau-de-vie, which must then be aged in French oak barrels for a minimum of two years.

    • Glassware: Serve a Sidecar in a coupe glass or a small martini glass.
    • Sugar rim: Spread some sugar on small plate, then rub a lemon wedge around the rim of chilled martini or coupe glass. Tilt the side of the glass in the sugar to lightly coat the outside rim of glass.
    • Boston Sidecar: Reduce cognac or brandy to ¾ ounce, add ¾ ounce light rum, and substitute ¾ ounce lime juice for the lemon juice.

It appeared in both Harry MacElhone’s Harry’s ABC of Mixing Cocktails and Robert Vermeire’s Cocktails: How to Mix Them in 1922. Like the Crusta, the Sidecar was built on Cognac , lemon juice, and an orange liqueur, streamlined without the Crustas Maraschino accent.

    Instead of the Crusta’s sugared rim, sugar syrup is added directly to the mix. This gives you more control over the drink’s sweetness, tempering the bite of the lemon and providing a balance between the tartness and the high-strength orange liqueur.

    My Desire A Sidecar With Blueberries

    Rim your glass with lemon and dip into superfine sugar, let set. In a cocktail shaker, add 8-10 blueberries and muddle. If you dont have a professional muddler use a wooden spoon. Fill with Ice and add the cognac the Grand Marnier and lemon juice to the shaker and really give it a shake, at least 20 seconds. Fill your glass. Garnish with fresh blueberries and a fancy lemon peel. For the lemon rose, peel a long a piece of lemon rind as thinly as you can get it. Roll it into a circle and secure with a skewer, add the blueberries. So fancy! Just like a pro and Bobs Your Uncle! Cheers!

    • Avoid adding crushed ice to the cocktail shaker as the ice will melt quicker and water down the cocktail.
    • For the best sugar rim, be sure to use superfine sugar. Granulated sugar will fall off the rim much more easily than superfine sugar.
    • For a little extra sweetness, add a dash of simple syrup or a generous pinch of superfine sugar to the shaker.

    Strawberry Lemonade With Grand Marnier

    This fruit punch is great for backyard BBQs or game day. Just stir up a big pitcher and let the adults dive in!

    You do have to do a little prep whipping up a strawberry puree beforehand, but this takes just a few minutes in the blender and is well worth it.

    That fresh fruit puree is swirled with lemon, sugar, and club soda to make refreshing lemonade.

    And then it gets interesting. Spike your lemonade with Grand Marnier and serve over ice.
