What Is Face Serum Exactly

How to Make DIY Face Serum Using Essential Oils

Face serum is not simply a fancy term for moisturizer. Its far more than a moisturizer.

A serum is a concentrated blend of nutrients that can permeate beneath the skins surface to support your skin cell health. Think of it as daily vitamins for your skin.

Store-bought and homemade face serums are sometimes targeted for specific purposes. So you might see Serum for Acne-Prone Skin or Anti-Aging Serum. And then there are many facial serums that are beneficial for anyone with a face. My face serum recipe falls into the latter category.

Essential oil blends are more potent and effective than single-use oils alone.

This DIY serum is full of only natural ingredients that can revitalize your skin if used every evening or night as part of your regular skincare routine.

Apply the serum after youve applied your moisturizer to seal in the hydration.

Keep in mind that the serum contains lemon oil, so we dont recommend using it during the day as it can make age spots worse or irritate your skin.

  • What Are Essential Oils

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds in concentrated form, with many health benefits. Theyre derived straight from nature and contain numerous essential minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that can make your skin glow like never before.

Essential oils provide fast absorption which penetrates deep into the dermis to neutralize free radicals and rejuvenate skin cells.

They can also reduce hyperpigmentation, improve skin tone and elasticity, clear up acne and rashes, relieve inflammation and redness, hydrate dry patches, and soothe irritations.

Different essential oils provide different benefits. Well go over that more later.

    About Essential Oil Quality

I recommend using only high-quality essential oils, especially for topical, internal, or aromatic applications. Cheap versions may have added ingredients and lack the quality control standards of more reputable brands. I would personally not risk it.

II have used Elia brand oils for topical and aromatic purposes.

What I Love About This Diy Face Serum Recipe

A Word About My Favorite Essential Oils

Since the beginning of 2019, I have struggled with the fact that I have primarily been using essential oils from a single company. On many levels, it was time for a change.

Alas, this was easier said than done since I needed to assess the performance of various EOs in my tried and true salve and roller ball formulas. In addition, I wanted to find a budget-friendly company that offered 100% free shipping all of the time.

My first successful tests have been with essential oils from Plant Therapy. This was a logical choice since Plant Therapy has always been my preferred source for carrier oils such as Fractionated Coconut oil and Jojoba oil. They carry a huge variety of EOs and are available to purchase directly both on the Plant Therapy website and on . As a bonus, their web site posts test results individually by oil along with the corresponding batch number. This assures me that the oils are not fake.

While there are many excellent EO companies, I am happy with my choice and hope you will check them out. Wherever you decide to purchase your oils, let your nose guide you. If your essential oil smells like paint thinner, return it. Good oils smell nice.

This hyaluronic acid serum recipe is perfect for all skin types and moisturizes and repairs the skin. Use daily along with a natural moisturizer for best results.

Do not underestimate the power of serums. I see so many skip this step in their skin routine, yet its one of the simplest things that can dramatically impact your skin.

A quality beauty serum comprises organic ingredients designed to target specific skin concerns like fine lines, troubled areas, and puffiness while rejuvenating the skin. IngredientsJojoba Oil

DirectionsAdd essential oils to a 15ml dropper bottle. Top with 1/3 Rose Hip Oil and 2/3 Jojoba oil.

For a 10ml dropper bottle, use 5 drops of each essential oil.

Use a generous amount twice daily, morning and night. By generous, I mean 1/3 to 1/2 dropper full of serum. The carrier oils, Rose Hip and Jojoba, are very skin friendly and absorb quickly without any greasiness.

Note: This is a 5% dilution.

Rose Hip Seed Oil Is Also A Star Ingredient

I would be remiss if I did not include a word about Rosehip Seed Oil. This gentle oil is not at all greasy and absorbs quickly into the skin. Rich in fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants, for me it is almost too rich which is why I combine it with Jojoba oil. I found that using it straight resulted in little bumps on the surface of my skin. That is the reason why I blend it with Jojoba oil, a fantastic carrier oil that mimics the sebum in our skin and has a long shelf-life.

Rosehip seed oil has a reputation for correcting dark spots and reducing scars and fine lines which, in addition to the Frankincense, may be why this serum is so darn effective.

The combination of Rose Hip Seed oil and Jojoba oil makes a wonderful synergy. That being said, your experience may be different than mine so feel free to skip the Jojoba oil and use 100% Rose Hip Seed Oil or even 100% Jojoba oil.

Diy Face Serum With Coconut Oil

My Favorite Essential Oils Face Serum

Coconut oil isnt something that I would recommend adding in your face serum. All types of oils have a comedogenic rating, which ranks oils and butters based on their likelihood to clog pores. Preferably, you should choose oils that have a comedogenic rating between 0-2. Coconut oil has a rating of 4, which makes it highly comedogenic and therefore, highly likely to clog pores and cause acne.

Essential Oil Recommendations For Your Diy Serum

There are many choices when it comes to the essential oils to use in your DIY facial serum. You can customize this serum to your skins specific needs.

You may need acne fighting essential oils like Tea Tree, or perhaps you need anti-aging oils to fight those inevitable wrinkles, or like me, maybe you need moisturizing hydration.

I have extremely dry skin, and I live in the desert with about 8% humidity, so I really need to give my skin extra hydration PLUS I need some help with anti-aging.

And lets be honest. At my age, I need all the anti-aging wrinkle fighting help I can get. So I chose some specific oils to help with those needs, like Blue Tansy.

Go with what your skin needs. Ive got some more specific recommendations for different skin types below.

You can use as few as 1 or 2 essential oils in this, or as many as you like. Use what you have. There is no need to run out and buy a bunch of essential oils in order to make this.

These are general recommendations for all skin types

If youre not sure where to start, Lavender and Frankincense would be good choices.

    Better Than Botox Really

The first real indication that I was on to something with this serum is when my husband noticed that the fine lines around my eyes had mostly disappeared. I had already noticed that my skin appeared a lot smoother, so much so that I had stopped using a primer under makeup. And holy moly, my skin looked good even without makeup. That was a first for me.

Here is an unretouched photo of the area around my eyes. Keep in mind I am older than dirt so there is some sagging but the creepy fine lines are gone.

During my working years, I would get Botox injections around the eye area. It was expensive but did a lot for my self-esteem. A number of years back, I stopped the Botox injections not only because of the expense, but because I learned to become comfortable with the aging process. Still, who can deny the boost you get from looking at yourself in the mirror and seeing fewer wrinkles and fine lines instead of more?

What Carrier Oils Are Best To Use With My Essential Oils

Use a quality carrier oil to dilute your essential oils for topical use preferably organic, cold-pressed, unrefined oils. Think of carrier oils as a way to help your EOs absorb better into your skin. A good carrier oil maximizes your essential oils potential benefits and dilutes them to a non-irritating concentration.

This recipe uses jojoba oil which is a very face friendly oil that absorbs fairly quickly. Making it easy to apply and wear under makeup. You can use it alone or wear it with another moisturizer if you have very dry skin or are experiencing dry conditions where you live.

Jojoba oil is considered a non-comedogenic oil meaning it wont clog your pores the way that a comedogenic oil might when applied to the face. A good general rule I use is to only use fractionated coconut oil to body products, and use jojoba for the face.
