3 High-Protein Breakfast Recipes To Start Your Day Right | Myprotein

Pureed fruits are often used as a dessert or a quick snack. Both fresh fruits and canned fruits make good tasting purees.

  • If using fresh fruit, remove all skin, seeds, pits, and cores.
  • Make sure fresh fruits are very ripe.
  • Fibrous fruits may need to be cooked first. If so, cook them in apple juice or other fruit juice for the best taste.
  • Canned fruits should be drained very well before pureeing.
  • Frozen fruits should be thawed completely and also drained well.
  • Puree the fruit in a food mill, food processor, or blender until smooth.
  • If the puree is too thick, add back some of the original juices or use apple juice or other fruit juice.
  • If it is too thin, add more fruit that has been squeezed or drained. Commercial thickeners are also available.

    For an entry-level, cheaper food mill, the Weston food mill is a decent product.

    It does have all the standard features like 3 sizes of milling discs, a stainless steel bowl, and it is easy to clean.

    However, there is a basic problem with this food mill that has to do with stability.

    Stability, like I talked about before, is important when using a food mill. Otherwise, you could end up with a huge mess.

    This food mill, unfortunately, sits loosely on top of the bowl while being used. Another option is to hold it firmly with one hand over the top of the bowl. Neither of these methods is as secure as the tripod feet of the OXO or the notched feet of the Alisa model. This means that the food mill is going to move around a lot when being used.

    About Pured And Mechanical Soft Diets

    Foods in puréed and mechanical soft diets are smoother and easier to swallow than regular foods. They need very little or no chewing at all to swallow.

    You may have to follow a puréed or mechanical soft diet if you:

    • Have trouble chewing or swallowing
    • Had mouth surgery
    • Have trouble moving or have lost feeling in parts of your mouth, such as your lips or tongue

    If youre on a puréed diet, you will eat foods that you dont need to chew, such as mashed potatoes and pudding. You can also blend or strain other foods to make them smoother. Liquids, such as broth, milk, juice, or water may be added to foods to make them easier to swallow.

    If youre on a mechanical soft diet, you will eat foods that require less chewing than on a regular diet. You can eat foods with different textures and thicknesses, including chopped, ground, and puréed foods.

    Beans Peas And Lentils

    Beans and other legumes are good sources of protein and are very easy to purée. This is especially true for canned beans and lentils. Although dry beans may be used as well, be sure to cook until soft before puréeing.

    Examples of Common Beans, Peas, and Lentils: Cannellini, Navy, Lima, Pinto, Black, Kidney, Lentils, Soy, Split Peas

    Beans, peas, and lentils provide a source of protein that is often much less expensive than meat, poultry, and fish. Bean, pea, and lentil purées can be used as main course items or as side dishes.

    Unlike meat, fish, and poultry, beans, peas, and lentils contain carbohydrates, including fiber. Most people do not get enough fiber. Fiber adds bulk to the stool and enhances bowel regularity. Fiber also reduces the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers .

    As beans, peas, and lentils purée so well, preparation time is minimal and texture is usually smooth and cohesive without having to add other ingredients to achieve the recommended “spoon thick” consistency.     Transition To Pureed Foods Gradually

    Your stomach is still swollen and healing from surgery. This will limit how much pureed food you can comfortably eat at one time. You may be surprised by the small portions you are eating.

    Start by slowly eating 1-2 tablespoons of a pureed food. Pause for a couple of minutes before continuing. Youve had enough if you feel full, begin to hiccup, have an itchy nose, sneeze, or sense that one bite more will be too much. Over the course of the week, gradually work up to ¼ to ½ cup of pureed food in each meal, if possible.

    How Much Protein Should I Be Getting During The Pureed Stage

    Ideally you will be meeting the minimum protein goal of 60 g protein set by the ASMBS. Many post bariatric patients can meet this requirement within 2-3 weeks after surgery. However, most of your protein will be coming from your protein drinks at this stage and not your real food.

    You likely will not be able to eat more than 20 g of protein a day. Even if you had the the perfect diet, your new pouch size is not big enough to hold as much protein as you need which is why the protein drinks are so important.

    Bariatric Pureed Foods: What You Need To Know

    The pureed food stage is the second stage of the post-bariatric surgery diet and the start of a whole new approach to eating. Youll enjoy more variety and have more options for meeting your nutrition goals in this stage as you add small amounts of pureed, semi-solid food to the full liquids you enjoyed in your first week post-surgery. Youll start to develop new habits that can help you maintain your weight loss over the long term. Like the liquid diet stage, the pureed food stage of your bariatric diet is short, just one week.
