To make cold brew concentrate, youll need:

  • GROUND COFFEE: You can use whole coffee beans and grind them yourself to a coarse grind or use store-bought ground coffee. Use any type of coffee you prefer and like.
  • COLD OR TAP WATER

Cold Brew Coffee Ratio: For me, the perfect ratio is around 1:4 or 1:5. Meaning, I use one cup of coffee grounds to 4 cups of water. This yields around 4-6 servings of cold brew concentrate. I don’t weigh my ingredients, measuring cup for cup works just fine.

To make cold brew Iced Coffee, you’ll need:

  • OAT MILK: I used oat milk that is creamy and perfect for making iced coffee drinks. I love Oatly Barista Edition. It’s even creamier, perfect for coffee. You can use any milk you like here.
  • SWEETENER: Although cold-brewed coffee is naturally sweeter than regular black coffee, if you feel like your Iced Coffee isn’t sweet enough, you can add extra sugar. I suggest you use pure maple syrup or honey . Any other sweetener will just ruin the amazing coffee taste.

  • 7/25/2010 icons / ellipsis / ellipsis-horizontal As written, this makes much too weak a glass of iced coffee. I use 1 cup of coffee and 4 cups of water to make the concentrate, but then I only add 2 cups of water after filtering. I then doctor it up with sweetener and dairy to personal specifications . To avoid diluting the drink, you might want to make some ice cubes from the same recipe. You can also make the concentrate in the refrigerator allow 24 hours instead of 12. icons / like
  • Tips For Making Cold Brew Coffee

    • Grind your beans at a medium coarse consistency. You dont want finely ground coffee beans, which is what youd use for drip coffee. I recommend this coffee grinder, if youre looking to grab one.
    • Youll brew at a ratio of 4:1. Four cups of water to one cup of coffee beans. If you want more cold brew, just double this. And if youre using a mason jar , youll need to use slightly less to get it to fit 3 cups of water to 3/4 cups coffee beans. Just keep the ratio consistent.
    • You can steep the coffee in pretty much any container . I use a mason jar, but you could also use a french press or KitchenAid even has a nifty cold brew maker.
    • Use filtered water for the cleanest cup of cold brew.
    • Steep for at least 12 hours. After that, you can play around with the flavor. If youd like it stronger, brew it longer up to 24 hours. But I find that 12-15 hours usually keeps most coffee lovers happy.
    • While the cold brew can steep on your countertop at room temperature, once youve strained it, keep the concentrate in the refrigerator.
    • Dont forget to dilute the concentrate. As mentioned above, serve it with ice, water or some type of milk or creamer.

The Perfectly Easy Recipe For Cold Brew Coffee

First things first. Lets be honest, iced coffee is NOT hot coffee poured over ice. Its not the hot coffee that you meant to drink this morning and then set in the fridge. #RealMomMoment

Real iced coffee is actually something called Cold Brew.

Ive learned that by allowing the coffee beans to sit in cold filtered water allows the oils to be released into the water. Im not a chemist, Im not sure what happens. But its magic. Pure caffeinated magic in concentrate form. *sigh*

For our iced cold brew coffee, we use a French Press. If you havent used one before, it is a method of drawing out the oils of coffee beans, but for hot coffee. In this house, we use it exclusively for iced coffee .

This is the time to break out the French Press that you received as a wedding gift. YES. If you dont have one, youll need to make the coffee & water in a pitch or mason jar and strain with a cheesecloth. It will be one extra step of filtering it through the cheesecloth.

    Coarsely Grind The Coffee Beans

Using freshly ground coffee beans for any type of coffee absolutely ups your game. It delivers the best flavor regardless of how youre brewing it.

You do not want to buy preground coffee from the grocery store to make cold brew. Preground coffee is finely ground and ideal for coffee machines.

For cold brew, you need coarsely ground coffee. If you have a coffee grinder at home, set it on the coarsest setting usually the one designated for French Press coffee.

I have this coffee grinder and absolutely love it because I can choose the specific grind for any type of coffee Im brewing.

If you dont have a coffee grinder at home, buy the beans at a local coffee shop or roaster and ask them to grind the beans for you. There are certain grocery stores where you can purchase beans and grind them yourself, too. Again, be sure to grind them on the coarsest setting.

    Cold Brew Coffee Tips

    • Use flavored roasts!
    • Extracts like vanilla, raspberry, coconut, chocolate, etc in your cold brew will easily change up the flavor.
    • Compliment your roast flavor with lemon or orange slices, vanilla bean, mint leaves, nuts, and so on!
    • Add in sweeteners or sugar free syrups.
    • The lighter the roast you use, the more acidity it will have in it .

As for storage, your cold brew coffee should stay fresh for around 2-3 weeks so dont be scared to make a ton of it at a time!

How much caffeine does this cold brew coffee recipe have in it? Theres a ton of variables here but my estimate for the caffeine content is around 100-125mg of caffeine per 8 ounces.

    Cold Brew Coffee Brew Time

Let your cold brew coffee brew for around 14-16 hours.

Yes, you can brew it for longer than 14-16 hours but if you brew it for too long itll eventually start to bitter. In my opinion, letting it brew for 14-16 hours is optimal.

Whether you brew it in the fridge or leave it out to brew on the countertop is also completely up to you. One benefit of brewing it in the fridge is that youll have a nice, cold cup of coffee ready for you in the morning!

After your brew time is up, remove your ground coffee by filtering it. If you used a filter bag like me just pull your bag out, dispose of your grounds, and give your bag a quick rinse.

Distribute your cold brew coffee into some bottles for easy access to take with you or just leave it in your jar and serve it whenever you want it!

How To Make This Ahead To Serve At A Brunch

Summer Cold Coffee Recipes: Cold Brew, Chilled Brew and Japanese Iced Coffee

This recipe was recently featured in the Taste of Home Sunday Brunch special as part of an Easter Brunch special. It was so cool to see this recipe featured in print!

Heres what I recommended in the feature for making this cold brew coffee ahead of time for a brunch or a party:

I recommend brewing the coffee two days ahead. The day before brunch, strain the coffee into a pitcher and mix in the honey simple syrup. On the day of the brunch, set up a casual coffee bar with ice, glasses, the coffee pitcher, honey simple syrup , milk in a small pitcher, straws and spoons for stirring. Make a little extra simple syrup to accommodate any sweet tooths. And double the recipe if youre entertaining more than four coffee drinkers. This cold brew recipe is strong, so the milk doesnt water down the taste. If guests prefer black iced coffee, Id recommend they add a little water to their glass.

    Best Coffee For Cold Brew

Whats the best coffee for cold brew? Dark roast coffee. Light and medium roast is great for drip or pour over coffee, but cold brew tastes the best with dark roast coffee. This gets just the right bitter flavor when its cold. Some brands recommend: Starbucks Espresso Roast or Intelligentsia Black Cat.

    What Is Ice Brew Coffee

While the cold brew method uses room temperature water, the ice brew method uses ice water.

Ice is set on top of coarse coffee grounds, and the coffee is extracted as the water slowly melts and soaks in. Since the ice is allowed to thaw at its natural pace, the extraction process can vary depending on the room temperature. Generally, it takes around 48 hours.

You can prepare everything before you go to bed so that you can drink it the following morning. Although it takes time, the appeal is that you can set it and forget it, unlike hot brew coffee, which is best enjoyed with a more practiced method.

Due to the lower temperature, the extraction of bitter components is lower. At the same time, since the contact time with the coffee grounds is longer, the concentration becomes denser. This results in a thicker texture and a taste that is more mellow and pure.

    Cold Brew Coffee Recipe

Cost: You need only to look at the cost of one cold brew – at a coffee shop or in a bottle – to understand the answer to this question. Even if you buy one of our recommended cold brew makers, you’ll still save in the long run.

Time Saved: Instead of brewing coffee every morning, you can make a big batch all at once and then stash it in the fridge. It’ll be waiting for you whenever you need a caffeine boost.

No Bitter Flavor: Cold brew is known for its characteristically smooth, non-bitter flavor, much less bitter than other coffee. That’s because when coffee is made in a pour over or drip coffee maker, the hot water extracts bitter flavor from beans. With cold brew, there’s no hot water.

Customization: Another plus making your own? You have total control over the dilutionyou can make it weaker or stronger depending on your preferences.

Health Benefits: In emerging research, scientists have found links between cold brew and immune health. In addition, if regular coffee upsets your stomach, you might be able to enjoy cold brew instead because of its lower acidity.
