Sweet Potato Apple Sausage Skillet

Who doesnt love a quick and easy 30-minute meal made in a skillet? This sweet potato apple sausage skillet dinner comes together super quick, is full of flavor and protein. Gluten free and easily made Paleo and Whole30 with compliant sausage

Life is busy, TNNers.

As I am writing this, we are in the thick of the holiday season. I have parties booked up multiple nights of the coming weeks, holiday concerts to go to attend for my daughter, gifts to wrap, gifts to mail, cookies to bake and yada yada yada. I love it all, but it kind of makes my head spin when trying to get it all done on top of the hustle of normal everyday life. Like getting dinner on the table.

And while I want to blame it on the holidays, lets face it.life is always busy. There is almost away something just on the horizon that keeps us moving and adapting. And in this fast forward, always-one-more-thing-to-do culture that we are living and raising a family in, it is no wonder that processed convenience foods are so tempting and easy to reach for. I mean, we are busy folks who need something to give!

Which is why I love a really one-skillet dinner that comes together in a few minutes. No pile of dishes to conquer after the meal and a healthy dinner still makes it onto the table in a reasonable amount of time.

They are my sanity saver and often what stops me from ordering takeout when I have had a day of constant hustle.

Ingredients To Watch Out For In Whole30 Sausage

Youll recognize compliant meats by their simple ingredient list . Whole30 meats will just contain meat, water, and some minor spices.

Ingredients That Are Out:

  • Sugar. If you see sugar on a sausage ingredient, its automatically out, no questions asked. It doesnt matter if its organic cane sugar, maple syrup, or some other harmless-sounding sweetener. Any sugar listed means that meat is a no-go.
  • Sulfites. Sulfites are used as preservatives and are not allowed on Whole30. Unfortunately, many deli meats contain sulfites to preserve meat longer.
  • Carageenan. Carageenan is an emulsifier that can cause serious inflammation in the gut, which is why its not allowed on Whole30.
  • Soy / Soy Protein. Dont forget, soy is another ingredient where youll want to put down that package the moment you see it!
  • Dextrose. Dextrose is simply another name for sugar . Ive seen dextrose on quite a few sausage ingredient lists, so its worth repeating!
  • Cheese and/or Milk. Some sausages contain dairy for added flavor. Obviously, these arent allowed!

Note:Salt Dextrose is different from regular dextrose, since all iodized salt contains it .

    What Sausage Is Whole30 Approved

Aidells Chicken & Apple Sausage Medley

Whole30 approved sausages must contain no sugar, sulfites, carrageenan, soy, or dairy. Some popular brands for Whole30 approved sausages include: Trader Joes Garlic & Herb Chicken Sausage, Whole Foods 365 Mild Italian Pork Sausage, Niman Ranch Andouille Sausage, Applegate Farms Chicken & Apple Sausage, U.S. Wellness Pork Sausage , and more.

Always check the ingredient list yourself, as ingredients can change from time to time, making formerly compliant sausages no longer compliant.

    • Brussels sprouts 1 lb bag and cut then in half .
    • Bacon We like to get this from Butcher Box to ensure its sugar free and Whole30 friendly. I used a whole pack.
    • Apples My favorite type of apple for cooking and baking is Honeycrisp. They add the perfect amount of sweetness to this dish.

    For the sauce:

    • dijon mustard check your labels to ensure it does not have sugar or wine.

Must Know Tips For The Best Paleo Sausages

    Apple Chicken Sausage Bake
    • Arrowroot Power! I typically use arrowroot in place of cornstarch as a thickener for sauces, as a coating to enhance the crispy factor , and on occasion in paleo baked goods. In this recipe Im using it as a binder, and to help lock in the moisture from the shredded apples. Say goodbye to crumbly, dry Whole30 breakfast sausage for-like-ever.
    • Olive or Avocado Oil. Add it directly into the sausage mixture to help prevent the patties from drying out on the inside.
    • Add an Apple. One finely grated tart apple adds both that subtle sweetness that all great breakfast sausage is known for, plus a bit of moisture for super tender sausage patties.
    • Fresh Sage. Fresh chopped sage bring that wow factor. If you dont have fresh, substitue two teaspoons dried sage.
    • Chill! Time permitting, form all patties then chill in the fridge for 15 minutes. Totally optional, but I find that chilling the fats improves the texture just that much more.
    • Cook low and slow. Dont go too crazy with the heat here if you cook the sausages over a high flame, the insides will dry out by the time theyve reached the proper temperature, and the outsides will be overly charred.
    • Cook em Dry. Theres no need to add oil to the pan when frying be sure to drain the fat between batches for perfectly seared sausage crusts every time.
    • The Right Temperature. Try to nail a temperature of right around 165°F for best results undercooked pork is a health hazard, and overcooked sausages will be drier.
