Some are rounded in shape with a basket and others are more akin to a mini oven with trays like the Vortex. Recipes that were designed for the square oven-type models will carry over the best because they will be developed to use the trays and tested with that sort of layout. Likewise, recipes for convection ovens that have a rotisserie or rotating basket will carry over better because of their similarity to the Vortex.
Basket style air fryer recipes might need a bit of tweaking in terms of temperature and cooking time. But, the nice thing about the Vortex is that it has a window and a light, so you can keep an eye on how things are cooking.

How Long To Air Fry Bacon

Setup Process: Took A Little Trial And Error
The Instant Vortex is basically ready to go right out of the box. If youre going to use the Air Fry or Bake settings first, all you have to do is remove the plastic and styrofoam packaging, insert the cooking trays and the drip pan, and then complete a test run which simply involves running the machine for 20 minutes. Once thats done, youre ready to cook.
If you want to start with the Rotisserie setting, however, things are a little more complicated. Though the Vortex comes with two user manuals, we couldnt find clear instructions on how to insert the rotisserie basket or spit. After a bit of trial and errorabout 10 minutes of fumbling with the accessorieswe figured it out, but it would have been helpful to have step-by-step instructions.
As avid Instant Pot users, our expectations for the Instant Vortex Plus were admittedly high luckily, it didnt just live up to our expectationsit exceeded them.
After struggling with the setup process, we decided to Google more thorough instructions which led us to an additional manual on Instant Brands website. This proved to be exactly what we were missing as it detailedwith pictureshow to properly set up the Vortex for each cooking mode. While we were happy we found it after the fact, we wish the full manual had just been included in the box.
Cooking Roast Chicken In The Instant Vortex Plus
Next up, I had to see what the rotisserie had to offer this machine and if it was, in fact, worth the extra effort to roast a chicken this way.
I am no stranger to roasting a chicken. In fact, it is honestly one of my favorite things to cook, as well as a family favorite for dinner in my house. A chicken just tastes better when it is cooked whole. The added benefit of roasting something with bones and the undeniable perk of crisp, browned chicken skin makes it so worthwhile. I had high hopes for this method which, if it was a success, would be a true asset to this machine.
It is important to mention that this is not the time to prepare the biggest chicken you can get your hands on. I did my homework before shopping, and I am so happy I did because while the recommended size for this unit is up to 4 pounds, I did read some reviews that indicated a smaller bird would be better given the size of this air fryer. I settled on a 3-pound chicken which turned out to be quite fitting for the capacity of this oven.
Before I got down to cooking, I had to do a bit of preparation. First of all, I wanted to make sure my chicken was well seasoned. I used a spice rub I keep handy that consists of equal parts kosher salt, brown sugar, and smoked paprika, sprinkling over the exterior of the skin as well as a bit on the inside of the cavity to ensure this would be tasty throughout.

What About The Vortex Plus
While its very similar to the 4-in-1 air fryer, the standout feature in the Vortex Plus is the dehydrator. If youre looking for a reliable air fryer that can also produce perfectly dried fruits and veggies, the Vortex Plus is for you. Just like the 4-in-1, the Vortex Plus has a roomy, 6-quart basket with a nonstick coating for easy cleanup. Equipped with pre-programmed settings and a temperature-controlling dial, the interface is also super user-friendly. The only downside to this model is the broiler function, which is pre-set to 400 degrees F and for two minutes and didnt perform well for us in testing.

Yes, it has the Instant Pot name and it can do things besides air fry, but ultimately you can use ANY air fryer recipe in it, you just might need to make a few adjustments in terms of how the food sits in it. So, before you get flustered over not seeing a ton of recipes developed specifically for the Vortex, keep in mind the basic premise that it is an air fryer. The same goes for the Instant Pot. Dont crowd your tray. You want to ensure there is space between each potato. This is going to allow the hot air that circulates really get around all the spots on the potato. Giving it that even and nicely cooked potato that you want. If you pile potatoes on top of each other, you will find you dont have an even cook.
Instant Vortex Plus Review
While there are some drawbacks to this unit, there are some perks also. For our family of 4 this doesnât work size wise. We think this unit is great for those just starting out. If you are looking to cook for 1-2 people and cook in small batches the Instant Vortex Plus would work well for you.
As for the build of the unit. We may have gotten a fluke of a unit that wasnât well put together because the other Instant Vortex with a basket is perfect.
