First thaw the spinach. Then make sure to squeeze out the excess water. if this is not done, the recipe will be little soupy. However, getting the water out of spinach can be a messy task. I have experimented with this and here is my go-to trick now. I use a colander with many holes. Lay paper towels in the bottom. Add the spinach and use another paper towel to push on the spinach. Normally, I will get 1/3 of a cup of liquid. The water will drain away and clean up is a breeze. I show you in the photo below.

Time for another round of culinary confessions! Todays topic: spinach dip. Before going gluten-free, I loved spinach dip. Not high-class spinach dip, mind you. The kind you make from a packet of Lipton soup mix. I added sour cream, mayo, and a little parmesan and called it a day. I didnt even bother adding water chestnuts or green onions.

Since going gluten-free, I havent eaten this dip because , Lipton soup mix contains wheat. Boo!

So when a reader asked about a spinach dip, I headed into the kitchen to get reacquainted with an old friend. And I am so glad I did. Folks, creamy, wonderful spinach dip is back in my life.

Heres how to make it!

Shred a carrot. Remember to peel it before you shred it!

Chop it. This sounds like a silly step but, trust me, you want small pieces of carrots, not long shreds. You want fine pieces, not a mush.

Then chop an onion. You want that puppy finely chopped!

Next cook em. Why? Well, cooking not only softens the vegetables, it also takes the bite off the onions. This is key. You dont want the raw onion and carrot to compete with the other flavors. First cook the carrots.

Then cook the onions. You only need to cook the onions for about two minutes. Thats it! Use the same frying pan. If some of the carrots hang around the pan, thats fine. No need to spend time and energy getting each bit of carrot out of the pan.

Stir the onions and carrots together with the spinach.

Spread on a cracker. Die of bliss.

This Knorr spinach dip is easy to make, tastes ridiculously good, and I am pretty sure our Mom’s have been making this since the 1970’s! This is the recipe off of the Knorr vegetable soup package way back in the day.

I love to serve my spinach dip in a bread bowl and accompany it with some crisp crackers, potato chips, my homemade pita chips, and veggies! If you want another classic recipe try my cheese ball recipe, it’s another golden oldie!

How To Make Spinach Dip

Baked spinach dip
  • Mix together the ingredients in a medium-sized bowl.
  • Chill for at least 6 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.
  • To make a bread bowl, remove the top and insides of the sourdough bread and fill the bowl with the dip.
  • Slice the bread you removed from the center into cubes. Set aside.
  • On a large serving platter, place the bread bowl in the center and arrange the fresh vegetables, crackers, bread cubes, and/ or potato chips around it.

    • Make your Knorr Spinach Dip in advance will only add to the flavor. Allowing your dip to chill out in the fridge for a bit will give the ingredients time to marry together in perfect, best dip ever, harmony.
    • Squeeze that spinach dry.using a towel, wring your spinach out completely so its totally dry. Any moisture left in your spinach will make your dip watery and not good eats at all.
    • If you MUST use fresh spinach, start with baby spinach and youll need about a pound of fresh spinach. Place in a skillet with 3 tablespoons of water and cover. Allow the spinach to steam until wilted. Wring out using the kitchen towel method I mentioned above.

    • Sour Cream I used regular sour cream but heres an excellent chance to lighten things up with a low fat sour cream, if you wish. It wont really alter the flavor much at all.

    • Frozen Chopped Spinach Yes, you can use fresh but youll need mounds and mounds of fresh spinach to start. Then, youll have to cook it down. Its best to start with frozen, thawed.and just stir it right into your dip. So easy!

    • Nutmeg The secret ingredient that will make your guests say hmmm. In the best way possible.
    • Worcestershire A splash, thats all you need. It adds that desirable umami flavor you hear about every now and then.
    • Salt and Pepper To taste, be sure to taste the dip and add salt/pepper as needed. The Knorr Vegetable Mix is flavored a ton so you wont need a lot of extra seasoning.
