How Strong Is A Manhattan

Cocktail recipe: Still Austin Whiskey Co.s old fashioned | KVUE

The Manhattan is not a light cocktail. It is a very liquor-forward cocktail because it includes alcohol alone and is diluted with just a small amount of water during preparation. Assuming that an 80 proof whiskey is used, the average Manhattan is around 30 percent ABV . This is just slightly weaker than a straight shot of that same whiskey, so take it easy with this one.

A Brandy Old Fashioned

Why brandy?

Apparently at the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1893, a new brandy distiller from California called Korbel was sampling their spirits.

Korbel began pouring the classic Old Fashioned whiskey cocktail using brandy, and the German crowd from Milwaukee took to the brandy and the cocktail in a big way.

The Old Fashioned Cocktail

Even if you dont believe that the Old Fashioned cocktail was how cowboys took their medicine, adding sugar and bitters to whiskey is a fine way to drink it.

The bitters we use in mixology started out as medicine over 200 years ago and were claimed to cure all manner of ailments from hangovers to upset stomachs. Folklore has it that settlers on the American frontier started adding sugar and whiskey in order to make the medicine go down and the cocktail was born.

Whether you believe this or not, the Old Fashioned is the first cocktail, harkening back to the early 1800s. As the art of mixing drinks got more complex in the 1850s, drinkers wanting a simple combination of sugar, bitters, and whiskey would ask for a cocktail in the old fashioned style.

The modern Old Fashioned uses simple syrup instead of sugar cubes because its easier to make and doesnt leave you with a slug of half-dissolved sugar at the bottom of your drink. Its a great first cocktail if youre just getting started in mixology because its easy to make and has widespread appeal. Its inspired countless riffs and variations, and you can change it dramatically just by switching whiskeys.

The Whiskey To Vermouth Ratio

Like the martini, each drinker will have their preferred ratio of whiskey to vermouth. The 2:1 in the recipe above is a good starting point and the most common mix for the Manhattan. Many drinkers also prefer a 4:1 mix with just 1/2 ounce of sweet vermouth for 2 ounces of whiskey. Play around with this ratio to find your personal idea of the perfect Manhattan. It’s also likely that this will change depending on the particular whiskey you’re pouring.

Barrel Aged Cocktail Recipe Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned has been around since before Abe Lincoln was president and is one of the most popular bourbon cocktails of all time. Combining the full flavor of a bourbon or rye whiskey with the sweetness of the sugar and bitterness from Angostura bitters is what makes it absolutely delicious. Make sure whatever you do, start with a good bourbon. We made ours with the Herman Marshall Texas Bourbon Whiskey and it is quite tasty. Some have substituted bourbon for a rye whiskey for more of a spicy tang to the cocktail. You can use muddled sugar or simple syrup. We chose to use simple syrup since it is easier especially since we are making a larger batch than just one drink.

The Old Fashioned may be simple using only 3 main ingredients bourbon, sugar and bitters, but the complexity your drink will retain by being aged in a barrel far exceeds the basic mix and drink you will get at the bar. Let those ingredients mingle and marry in the barrel and you will be quite surprised with the notes you will taste after just a few weeks.

Cheers!

An old fashioned is honestly such an easy and classic cocktail to make. This whiskey old fashioned recipe is absolutely delicious and probably takes less than three minutes to put together. It is made with TX Whiskey , If you are from Fort Worth then you know this brand and love it. If you have not tried it, you need to! It is truly the best.

I am not familiar with the history of an old fashioned but I know they have been around for a long time and they are served at pretty much every bar. The standard ingredients for a whiskey old fashioned recipe is some bitters, whiskey, sugar, and citrus. It is really as simple as that. Everyone makes them slightly different but there are only four ingredients. Honestly, there really is not too much variation.

I think what makes this recipe so good is the whiskey. Seriously, if you have not tried TX Whiskey you really need to. I might be a little biased, just because I love everything and anything having to do with Fort Worth. But, even people who are not from Fort Worth love this whiskey so I know that it is good. Right now, TX Whiskey is doing an experimental straight rye whiskey. I tested this recipe with this product as well and it was SO good! You really cannot go wrong with any of their liquor! Another great item is their bourbon. For Thanksgiving I will make a bourbon pecan pie and the bourbon, being so rich in flavor, is what makes this recipe so good.

Directions. Build in fancy rocks glass. Drop 1 sugar cube in glass and put 2 dashes of Angostura bitters, a splash of fresh squeezed orange juice and muddle until sugar is mostly dissolved. The quintessential Old Fashioned recipe is the easiest cocktail to make. Start with rye whiskey or bourbon, simple syrup, and your favorite garnish.

There are a few different recipes out there for an Old Fashioned. Some use lemons or oranges instead of cherry as the garnish. Some use simple syrup instead of raw sugar. They all use bitters, but some use flavored bitters. Related: 11 Best Bourbons under $50. This is the basic Old Fashioned recipe that I use.

The old fashioned is a cocktail that is made with whiskey and citrus rinds to add bitters. As whiskey is the main ingredient, it is on the stronger side of cocktails. For fans of the old fashioned, or those interested in trying it for the first time, the type of whiskey used is an important factor in how the drink comes out.

Glassware: Rocks Glass. Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice and stir until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice and garnish with orange twist.

What Kind Of Whiskey Should You Use In An Old Fashioned

The short answer is: use whatever whiskey you like drinking.

Traditionally, the Old Fashioned is made with bourbon or rye whiskey. You can also use bourbon-style whiskeys that arent from Kentucky, like the many great American whiskeys from Tennessee to Texas. Using Canadian whisky, Irish whiskey, or Scotch will take the drink out of traditional territory, but is completely acceptable.

Remember, your cocktail is only as good as the worst ingredient. Thats especially true of the whiskey in the Old Fashioned, because the whiskey is the star of the show. That said, many whiskey-lovers save their high-end whiskeys for sipping and use their more inexpensive whiskeys for mixed drinks. Its really up to you a high-end whiskey wont be ruined in an Old Fashioned because the flavor wont be masked by other ingredients.

Some major brands I like are: Old Forrester, Bulleit, Sazerac Rye, Makers Mark, and Knob Creek. Im currently enjoying the Old Forrester 86-proof as my main bourbon for mixing, and the Sazerac Rye is absolutely fantastic if you like a rye Old Fashioned. Bulleit has solid offerings in both the bourbon and rye categories. These are all huge brands that should be accessible everywhere.

Living in Texas, I have a soft-spot for Texas whiskey. My favorite Texas distillers are Balcones in Waco, TX, and Ironroot Republic in Denison, TX. I highly recommend the Ironroot Republic Promethean and the Balcones Baby Blue.

How To Create Cocktails Based On The Old Fashioned

Its easy to create cocktails using the Old Fashioned formula that take the drink in surprising new directions.

In addition to swapping base spirits, you can also replace the simple syrup with other sweeteners. You could use a honey syrup, or replace the syrup altogether with a liqueur like a Curacao or Triple Sec. Combining two liqueurs is also an option. When creating The Sherpa, Sasha Petraske and Matt Clark replaced the 1/2 oz of simple syrup with 1/4 oz each of Curacao and St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram to create an Old Fashioned-style cocktail that paid homage to the classic but was wholly unique.

Changing bitters is another way to experiment. Instead of Angostura, try orange bitters, root beer bitters, or any of the other bizarre bitters on the market today. Some will pair well with your chosen whiskey, and others will clash. Try a few different combinations until you discover one that works. One of my favorite substitutions is to replace the bitters altogether with 1/4 oz of Amaro Montenegro.

Lastly, you can add new ingredients to the cocktail. When the weather turns cold, I like to add a few drops of cinnamon tincture to make a Cinnamon Old Fashioned.

Your newly created cocktail can be garnished any way you like.

A Sour is not so much a drink as it is a concept. Lemon or lime juice, almost any liquor, and sugarin proper proportionform a Sour. Dont even think about using a packaged mix for this cocktail. A simple but magical blend, the Sour was first made with brandy in the middle of the 19th century. Bartenders have flirted with and still have their occasional flings with numerous other base alcohols, but whiskey was the liquor of choice by the end of the 19th century, with rye on equal footing with bourbon. Bourbon is still favored by many, but blended whiskeys and Scotch have jockeyed for position. Add a dash of grenadine to a Whiskey Sour, and you have the sophisticated Ward Eight.

Always prepare Sours fresh. Here is a foolproof rule of thumb for making a perfect Sour every time: Mix 2 ounces of your chosen spirit with 1 teaspoon sugar and 3/4 ounce lemon or lime juice , and shake with cracked ice. Substitute lime juice for lemon in a Scotch Sour. Shake a Sour well for a truly frothy drink, and serve it straight up in a cocktail glass, over the rocks in a hefty Old Fashioned glass, or in a Sour glass. Garnish with any assortment of seasonally fresh fruit.

How To Make An Old Fashioned With A Sugar Cube

Gobble | Old Fashioned Highball | Whiskey Cocktail

If youre determined to make your Old Fashioned the traditional way, with a sugar cube instead of simple syrup, theres a few changes you need to make. Sugar doesnt dissolve well in cold water, so you need to muddle the sugar cube before you add ice.

Well build this one in the serving glass, rather than use our mixing glass.

  • Drop the sugar cube into the serving glass. Use an old fashioned glass, also known as a rocks glass or lowball.
  • Add 2 drops of bitters on to the sugar cube.
  • Add 1/2 oz of room temperature water to the glass.
  • Muddle the sugar cube until the sugar dissolves into the water.
  • Keep muddling you dont want any sugar granules to remain the bottom of the glass. Nobody wants their last sip to be a gritty mouthful of undissolved sugar.
  • Add the whiskey.
  • Add a large ice cube and stir.
  • Keep stirring for a long time since you dont have any cracked ice to speed the chilling process.
  • Garnish and serve
