Tips For Removing Dairy From Your Childs Diet

1. Experiment with dairy alternativesIf your child consumes a lot of dairy and the idea of removing it from his or her diet sounds overwhelming, a great first step is to start experimenting with dairy alternatives. There are tons of dairy-free milk, cheese, and yogurt options available, and once your child finds a few he or she enjoys, the transition will be much easier. There are also lots of delicious dairy free recipes for kids that will allow your little one to continue enjoying meals, snacks, and desserts he or she already eats without consuming dairy.

2. Read labelsIf youre removing diary from your childs diet, be sure to check all food labels closely. Many prepared foods contain dairy, so its better to be safe than sorry.

3. Find other sources of calciumWhen removing dairy from your childs diet, its important to find other sources of calcium to ensure he or she doesnt become deficient. There are tons of non-dairy sources of calcium you can consider, including soy beans and soya milk, nut milks, leafy greens, sardines, canned salmon, and chia seeds. Many juices, cereals, and breads are also fortified with calcium. Talk to your childs doctor and/or make an appointment with a dietician to ensure your little one is consuming enough calcium to be safe.

Tips For Storing And Reheating

Dairy

If you think meals are always best served fresh, think again! These tips will ensure that even leftovers taste brand new.

Freeze Individual Portions. For foods like muffins, cookies, and snacks, try wrapping each serving individually and storing them all together in a sealable bag. Then, when youre ready to eat, all you have to do is grab and defrost one rather than a whole batch.

Keep Broth and Non-Dairy Milk on Hand. The easiest way to spruce up leftover soups, pastas, and casseroles that have gone a bit dry is to add a splash of broth or dairy free milk as they warm back up. This will not only help liquefy the sauces but will also enhance the flavor.

Prepare Ahead of Time. Its always best to let frozen leftovers thaw in the fridge overnight rather than trying to get them to thaw quickly. So, if you can, try to prepare in advance, and move foods from the freezer to the fridge the night before. Then, all you have to do is warm them back up!

Utilize Your Favorite Tools. Kitchen gadgets are your best friends when it comes to kid friendly dairy free meals. Dont be afraid to take advantage of the Instant Pot, crockpot, air fryer, and more for easy reheating!

How To Melt Chocolate With Kids

A few of these recipes involve melting chocolate. This can actually be a fun and safe activity for kids. Find a bowl that fits snugly and a little raised in a pan. Set the pan on a trivet or square pot holder on the counter or table. Bring some water to a boil and pour it in the pan . Place the bowl on top of the pan. Its fine if the bottom is in the water. Wrap a towel around the pan to prevent young hands from touching the hot pot. Now they can add the chocolate to the bowl and stir it as it melts. The water and pan cool as you work, but still stay hot enough to keep the chocolate fluid for dipping and mixing.

Is It A True Milk Allergy

According to Jenny McGlothlin and Katja Rowell, MD, authors of Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating, some parents think that their children are allergic when it is a lactose intolerance. In those cases, lactose-free milk, hard aged cheeses, some yogurt, and even chocolate milk are more readily tolerated.

Additionally, some children grow out of an earlier sensitivity and even allergies. Check with your doctor for more detailed information.

    Milk Allergy Vs Lactose Intolerance

Milk allergy in kids is often confused and mistaken as lactose intolerance. However, these 2 conditions are very different and should not be confused with one another. Dairy allergy, as discussed above, is an immune system reaction to milk proteins and can be deadly in some cases.

Lactose intolerance, on the other hand, has nothing to do with proteins or the immune system. Instead, lactose intolerance is when the bodys digestive system does not have enzymes to digest sugar present in milk called lactose. This makes the work of the digestive system difficult, thus causing the condition better known as lactose intolerance, symptoms of which are gas, nausea, bloating, stomach ache, and at times diarrhea.
