Hi, do you think I could use other lean meats for this, like turkey? I try to rotate proteins but Ive been using a meal completer which is costing me so much money.. been looking for some good DIY recipes that are truly balanced.

Hi Bethany, yes I have used ground turkey for this! Usually when I make it with turkey, I just add a bit more beef liver to make up for the iron. Hope this helps!

How much should I feed a 70 pound dog?

  • stellanspice15 Mar 2022Reply

Hi Bella, I think it would be better to ask your vet about this. I am not a pet nutritionist and I am just following the directions from my veterinarian. You can find more information about he macros/nutritional values of this recipe on Rodney Habibs Youtube video that I linked in this blog post. Hope this helps!

We are looking at getting a puppy between 6-10 months old. Can we start them on this recipe as a puppy?

  • stellanspice17 Feb 2022Reply

You can but I would definitely supplement it with some puppy kibble since they have very different dietary needs. I am currently feeding my 7 lb, 5 month old 1/4 cup of this food plus 1/4 cup of puppy kibble 2 times a day. This was what my vet recommended. Hope that helps!

As your dog gets older, finding the right senior dog food is an important part of keeping your stay-at-home buddy happy. Weve previously covered the best dog food to consider, as well the best dry dog foods and even dog treats but how do you decide whats best for an older dog?

Pets age at different rates than humans age, says KT Boyle, DVM, of the Banfield Pet Hospital, noting that large breed dogs like Great Danes can be considered senior at six years old but smaller breeds like miniature poodles may not become seniors until they turn 10 years old. While age is a factor, Boyle suggests keeping an eye on your dogs energy level, whether or not they have white hair on their face and whether you notice a blue haziness or cloudiness, known as nuclear sclerosis, in their eyes. Talk to your vet if you notice your dog slowing down or exhibiting physical changes to determine if a change in diet could help. To that end, we consulted animal experts on how to shop for senior dog food and compiled some of the best senior dog foods available now.

Cooking Our Way To A Healthier Dog Diet

    DIY: Healthy Homemade Dog Food

Ever since I started raising my own dogs, Id always wanted to make their food at home but thought it would be too expensive or too time consuming, or that they wouldnt get the nutrition they needed.

During the month of Bugs doggy depression, I vowed to make her precious life as comfortable as possible.

Both of my pugs had a range of health issues growing up, which I unfortunately found out were common for the breed.

My older one had persistent hot spots and itchiness that no commercial dog food could cure .

Bug was overweight for a while when she was younger, even though she ate the recommended amount of food for her target weight. Eventually, I settled on Wellness kibbles and they did well with that brand.

But, I wanted to explore other options. I wanted to give them real food fresh, nutritious ingredients that I recognized and could even eat myself.

Ive mentioned in my post on homemade whole grain chicken feed that the entire household all share the same whole grains and seeds that we buy in bulk, as well as the bounty that comes from our edible garden.

Everything our animals eat, we can eat.

When it comes to homemade feed for our laying hens, we stick to a tried-and-true formula that works for every layer: 16 to 17 percent protein , vitamins, minerals, and amino acids from a wide variety of grains and seeds, and free range of a pasture for weeds, greens, and insects.

Dogs, on the other hand, arent bred for a standard function the way chickens are.

    Time & Storage Issues

Its a lot easier to grab a huge bag of dry kibble off the shelf at the supermarket than it is to source multiple items from multiple stores for cooking at home. Then theres the issue of having to cook for your dog daily.

And many people dont have the freezer space to pre-cook a months worth of dog food.

Ill show you how to deal with each of these points. My system makes it feasible to feed my two dogs fresh food daily for over 10 years. I spend only a few hours a month on it and its less costly than some high-end commercial food products.

    Feed Smaller Meals More Often

Dogs with kidney problems often feel better when fed several small meals throughout the day rather than just one or two large meals. You may find that you need to adjust your feeding schedule as time goes on to keep your pup comfy! Hooch has really benefited from smaller meals throughout the day and seems to have much more energy all the way into the evening.

    Finely Chopped Dog Food

If your dog is picky or will only eat finely chopped dog food , you can either run the vegetables through a food processor or finely chop them on a cutting board. Hand held boxed graters work but take a lot of time. I use the shredder blade on my processor and buzz everything through. Also, try frozen riced vegetables, they are a great option and work great!

Keep your dog healthy and fit with this easy peasy homemade recipe its cheaper than store-bought and chockfull of fresh veggies!

I never thought I would be one of those dog owners who made homemade human food for their pups. Not in a million years.

But when Butters recently fell sick with an upset stomach, our vet advised us to feed him a bland diet chicken and rice without any kind of seasoning. So thats what we did we poached a chicken, shredded it in a food processor, and mixed in some white rice and fed him this bland diet for 3 days.

Thats when I started to do some research on homemade dog food, and I have been so amazed as to how many different kinds of vegetables dogs can have. And with the help of Balance IT, you can create so many different recipes for your pup!

Now the best part about making homemade dog food just like making anything at home is that you know exactly what is going into the dog bowl, and not any of that questionable gelatinous gunk from the canned food.

But its important to note that dogs have different nutrient requirements than humans for their proportional body size, such as:

  • High-quality protein
  • Fat
  • Calcium
  • Essential fatty acids
  • Now this recipe here has a balance of 50% protein, 25% veggies and 25% grains, but the ratios can easily be adjusted to suit your pups breed and/or needs.

Is your dog sensitive to particular components? Serve him Blue Buffalo’s Freedom Adult Chicken Recipe Grain-Free Dry Dog Food, which is made entirely of real chicken and devoid of any poultry by-product meals, corn, wheat, soy or artificial flavors or preservatives.

Extremely Important: Add A Balancing Supplement

I prefer using the Balance IT Canine Plus supplement which allows you to reheat your pups meal one time without destroying the nutrients. If you opt for the regular Balance IT Canine supplement, youll have to mix it in after youve reheated the food, or you can serve the food cold.

Failing to add the supplement will lead to critical nutritional imbalances. These can result in serious health problems over time. Please take this very seriously!

    Added Joint Supplements For Seniors

    DIY Homemade Dog Food

Dogs are more likely to develop arthritis as they age, especially if they are overweight or obese. Supplementing with glucosamine and chondroitin, both precursors for cartilage, may reduce the symptoms of arthritis in dogs after a few months according to some studies. Research offers even more definitive evidence for the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, both of which have been shown to reduce inflammation in the joints and the symptoms of arthritis .

Unfortunately, many diets marketed for seniors advertising glucosamine, chondroitin, EPA, and DHA do not contain effective amounts of these substances. To get results, you may need to add them to your dog’s food unless it is one specifically labeled for joint health.

Does Your Senior Dog Need Fewer Calories

VET APPROVED HOMEMADE HEALTHY DOG FOOD RECIPE | COOKING FOR YOUR DOG

Obesity is rampant amongst pets in the United States. And older dogs are more likely to be obese than their younger counterparts. Not only have they had more years of over-consuming highly digestible food, but they also tend to burn fewer calories due to inactivity.

The smartest thing is to get an honest assessment of your pets weight from your veterinarian. If your pup needs to lose weight, ask your vet what your dogs ideal weight would be. Also, ask them to help you figure out how long it should take to lose the weight.

Getting an obese senior dog to a healthy weight could add years to his life. And it will definitely make those years more enjoyable.

Feeding this way can also be detrimental to your pet’s health if you’re not paying attention to the nutritional content of these meals and comparing them with nutritional requirements.

Well-balanced meals are key. For example, if your homemade dog food meal contains too many vitamins, it could cause vitamin toxicity.

On the other hand, if it doesn’t provide the dog with enough nutrients, it will cause nutrient deficiency or malnutrition.

Food Ingredients That May Be Problematic For Senior Dogs

Finding the best dog food for senior dogs involves looking for certain beneficial ingredients while also avoiding those that could pose problems. Here are two to keep in mind:

    • Certain grains: There is no evidence grains are harmful to senior dogs, but some grains may be less digestible than other plant-based proteins and carbohydrates. Some dogs may find diets high in grains and low in animal proteins less palatable, too.
    • Grain-free proteins: As always, there is a flipside. Interestingly, newer research shows an emerging association between low levels of blood taurine, a nutrient important for heart function, and grain-free diets that are high in legumes . It may be because these grain-free protein sources are less digestible. If your dog has heart disease, ask your vet about what is currently known about this association.
