When I first started cooking for my dogs, I clung to recipes like a lifeboat. Id follow them exactly, paranoid that if I didnt I would unknowingly slip in something toxic or that my poor pups would suffer some crippling deficiency down the line. Cooking this way wasnt very sustainable though. Was a whole recipe ruined if I happened to run out of parsley? Could I substitute kale? I had no idea.
And not every recipe, I discovered, is guaranteed to feed your dog right. A 2013 study conducted at UC Davis found that out of 200 recipes, including many written by veterinarians, only 5 included all essential nutrients in concentrations that met the recommended daily values for adults dogs. I could feel this too as I searched for recipes Id occasionally find one that seemed good, while others focused on powering your pup by superfoods or mimicking the look of a human breakfast spread. Sometimes Id try to judge a recipe only to realize I barely knew what good meant. And I didnt feel comfortable improvising at all, because I didnt understand what I was cooking or why!
Thats when I had a realization:If I could feed myself, I could figure out how to feed my dogs. I decided that the only way to break free of recipes without becoming paralyzed by nutritional charts was to feed my dogs by two philosophies I follow in my own quest for healthy eating:
1. Balance is key, and possible over time.
2. You have some wiggle room.

If you have a dog living with kidney disease like we do, you may also want to eventually invest in a slow water feeder. Dogs with kidney disease can get quite thirsty and will actually start drinking water too fast which causes its own unique set of problems.
The Risks Of Feeding Pets With Recalled Foods
It is important to note that the recall does not mean any immediate health risks to pets.
Instead, it is a precautionary measure as some of the ingredients in Pure Balance foods may be contaminated with salmonella and listeria bacteria.

However, to be objective in our assessment we had to carefully analyze the list of Pure Balance dog food ingredients to determine whether such a brand deserves to be poured into your dogs food bowl.
- Below average to average proteins
All dogs need protein if they want their muscles to grow stronger and develop fuller. On that note, one of the most important ingredients to be considered in any dog food is its protein content. While Pure Balance dog food boasts of high quality animal proteins as its first ingredient we find its total content to be subpar compared to other dog food brands.
The 6 dry and 2 wet food products weve listed in this Pure Balance dog food review posted an average of 28.5% for the dry food versions and 44.44% for the wet varieties .
This is computed on a dry matter basis. While you might think that these figures are good enough youd have to look at other dog food brands. For example, some dry dog food brands have a dry matter protein content of at least 35% while wet food varieties come in at 45% at the very least. Obviously, there is no problem with the wet variety of Pure Balance. Our concern now is in its dry dog food variants.
On a more positive note, youd have to commend Walmart for its use of novel proteins like lamb, bison, and venison. These should be very useful for dogs that have very sensitive tummies.
