No matter what type of nutrition research is done, theres always one thing in common. That common factor is that adding more plants to your diet can offer a whole host of health benefits.

Plants are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and specific compounds that not only help our bodies function at peak performance but that can lead to decreased risk for certain cancers, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, dementia, and obesity. They are naturally low in calories, free from saturated fats, high in fiber and high in free radical fighting antioxidants.

Studies show that even just adding more plants to your diet, without having to entirely eliminate meat, have a big impact on improving health and lowering the risk for certain chronic diseases.

How To Make A Delicious Mediterranean Style Hummus Dish

Plant-Based Mediterranean Salad with Hummus Dressing

Making hummus is a great way to use up excess vegetables or fruits that are going to go to waste. In this Mediterranean style hummus dish, we use chickpeas as our base. We then add in garlic, tahini, lemon, and extra-virgin olive oil. We also add in some ground cumin and coriander for a bit of spice. Finally, we add in some water and let the mixture come to a boil. Once it boils, we reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, we puree the mixture using a food processor or a blender. Finally, we season it with salt and pepper to taste and serve it with fresh parsley or olives for a bit of extra flavor.

Are There Any Downsides To Following This Diet

It depends on how you approach it, and Keatley emphasizes that balance is always key. Just because something is plant-based, vegetarian, or vegan does not mean it is going to be good for you all the time and in unlimited quantities, he says. Having a balance of high-energy carbohydrates like whole-grains, beans, and legumes should be balanced with other micronutrients to maintain a healthy weight and lean body mass.

Keep in mind that youll need to make sure youre covering all of your nutritional bases if you go fully plant-based. If you take it to the most extreme level by eliminating all animal foods, you may require a vitamin B12 supplement, Ansel says.

The bottom line: Overall, the Blue Zone diet is a pretty solid approach. There isnt a downside to adding more plant foods to your diet and lowering added sugars and overly processed food, Gans says.
