Homemade laundry detergent recipe safe for HE washers and smells fresh and clean! Simple ingredients and easy to make!
Yesterday I posted on Instagram and Facebook that I was almost out of the homemade laundry detergent I made back in January . I had quite a few people that wanted the recipe so I thought Id post it here for now. Ill eventually have another section on this blog dedicated to all things DIY, like this! Ive tweaked this recipe a little by adding in a scent booster.
Ive been playing around with different homemade laundry detergents for a while now. Mainly because I wanted to find something that wouldnt irritate my newly sensitive skin and Im just simply intrigued by DIY recipes. Homemade products have always proven to be superior in my book. Although Im still searching for a good recipe for homemade dish pods.
If youre interested in homemade laundry detergent because you are looking for something greener then you may need to adjust this recipe a bit. While its definitely greener than your average commercial detergent, I do opt to put in some things that folks wouldnt consider green, like Downy Scent Boosters!
I didnt add any scent booster to my last batch I used this year and I soooo missed pulling hot clothes from the dryer that smell fresh and clean! You can totally leave it out though if you could care less about scent. Scents just motivate me to fold clothes lol.
Homemade Laundry Soap Instructions
1. Shred a 5 ounce bar of Fels Naptha Soap with a cheese grater. You could also use a food processor.
2. Put the soap in a saucepan with 2 cups of water, over medium heat, and stir constantly, until the soap is all melted.
3. Fill the five gallon bucket 1/2 way with water. Add 1/2 cup Washing Soda, 1 cup Borax, and your melted soap water mixture.
4. Give it a stir, and fill the rest of the bucket with water.
5. Add essential oils for scent.
- My favorite is Wild Orange!
- I do 25-30 drops for a 5 gallon bucket.
6. Let it sit overnight with the lid on.
7. In the morning give it a good shake, or stir to mix well. Stirring it with a drill paint mixer attachment, or an immersion blender, really helps to get the clumps out!

The Easiest Diy Laundry Soap Recipe Ever
Heres what you need:
- 2-4 lbs Baking Soda
You can find all these in the laundry aisle at Walmart, near the stain treaters.
Heres the super cool time & energy-saving trick that makes grating the soap tons easier: Unwrap the Fels-Naptha soap and microwave at 30-second intervals until it gets all puffy. The puffiness makes the dense soap much simpler to grate to the fine texture thats needed for easy dissolving. Allow the soap to cool completely before grating or itll get clumpy.
Chop the cooled soap into chunks and place into a food processor one bar at a time. Add about 1/4 cup of the baking soda to keep the soap from clumping together.
Process until its really finely grated, resembling the texture of cornmeal. The more finely grated the soap is, the better itll dissolve in your washing machine, especially in cold water.
Use 1-2 tablespoons per load, depending on load size and soil level. If your soap is grated finely enough, it should dissolve in any temperature of water. It will work in HE washersjust make sure you have the dispenser adjusted for powdered detergent . If you find that it doesnt get adequately rinsed out of the dispenser, just put it in with the clothes. For regular washers, start the water first then add detergent so it can start dissolving before you add clothes.

How To Make Homemade Laundry Detergent
Reminder: This recipe makes 5-gallons of concentrated liquid laundry detergent. Youll fill an old laundry jug half way with it and then add an equal amount of water, meaning youll actually get 10 gallons of laundry detergent from this batch.
To make your detergent:
Shake well before using as ingredients may separate.
Note: your detergent may be thin, thick or lumpy depending on the hardness of your water, room temperature etc. Its fine no matter how it turns out. If its thick or lumpy when cooled, just make sure you whisk it well to break up the lumps.
*BUCKET-FILLING TIP: If you have a retractable hose at your kitchen sink, just place your bucket on the floor in front of the sink, and stretch the hose over to fill the bucket.
Homemade Laundry Detergent Price Breakdown
This stuff is dirt cheap! Here is the cost per loadyou wont believe this:
Bar Soap = $3.25
Washing Soda = $8.49/55 oz box
Borax = $3.97/72 oz box
To make four gallons of laundry soap:
1 bar of soap = $3.25
1/2 cup of borax = $0.06

Borax is a naturally occurring mineral made up of sodium, boron, oxygen, and water. It is an ingredient in most of the natural soaps available now but it is much more inexpensive to make yourself. There are some concerns about the safety of Borax, but heres why I feel comfortable using it, especially for laundry.
Washing Soda, sometimes called sodium carbonate or soda ash, is made from common salt and limestone or found as natural deposits. If you cant find this locally, you can make your own from plain baking soda with this tutorial. Here are some other great household uses for washing soda.

High Efficiency Lavender And Lemon Laundry Soap
Using a food processor with a grating wheel and a fine processing blade is recommended to cut down your overall time. If using a food processor, cut the bar soap into smaller chunks that will easily fit down the chute.
- 20 drops lemon essential oil
- 20 drops lavender essential oil
Grate the bars of soap with the food processor. Remove soap and swap out the grating wheel for fine processing blades. Add 1/3 grated soap to the processor and a small scoop of OxoBrite.
The OxoBrite prevents the soap from sticking to the processor blades. Add more soap and powder until all grated soap is finely processed.
Dump soap and powder into a large stainless steel bowl, add remaining ingredients and stir to prevent components from layering. Store soap in glass jars. Use one to two tablespoons for each laundry load, depending on how dirty the clothes are.
Using Wool Dryer Balls And Essential Oil For A Fresh Scent
I love my homemade laundry soap as is.
How I get that wonderful scent into my clothes is by using essential oil & those wool dryer balls here.
I love to put 5 drops onto each ball .
As mentioned in this post, I use Bergamot essential oil.
