Well you know, how could I not? Seeing as how this months #BundtaMonth challenge is booze and I live on Long Island, Long Island Iced TeaCake made perfect sense!
In case youve been living under a rock, didnt go to college , dont have a joker as a friend, Long Island Iced Tea is for the 21 and over crowd, despite how it tastes, it is most definitely not iced tea, *hic*. The thing of it is, its one of those wild concoctions that doesnt taste like what it really is and so you have a tendency to drink it like what its not and then have another and another and then you stand updont ask how I know, Im not telling.
What it actually is, is a concoction made from five different clear liquors vodka, gin, white rum, tequila and triple sec with a bit of sour mix and splash of cola for that tea-like color. It was created as part of a contest at a bar right here on Long Island in New York in 1972. The only requirement was that Triple Sec had to be included in the recipe. These cakes are also quite tasty without the soaking liquid so you can control just how boozy you want the to be.
I must say this would make a great addition to your New Years Eve party dessert tray.

The Long Island Iced Tea is likely the strongest one you can mix up, but make sure you sip these babies slowly they sure do pack a punch! The origins of the LIIT arent quite as clear as the drink itself. The name would lead you to believe it to be invented in Long Island, New York, and that IS where the current incarnation got its name in the 1970s. However, the cocktail may have been invented in the 1920s during the prohibition era. That version of the drink was made with maple syrup and whiskey in addition to the clear liquors.
How To Make Long Island Iced Tea Cocktail
An easy-to-follow recipe for Long Island Iced Tea for that refreshing drink at the end of the week with a kick! Nothing beats a classic cocktail recipe that would certainly on anyone’s favorites list. A balanced drink with a blend of spirits, orange liqueur and sweet and sour mix then rounded off with the classic Coca-cola.

Use Good Quality Spirits
As much as it just feels like youre dumping everything but the wet bar sink into this cocktail, the spirits you choose do matter. At Holiday, the well spirits include Plantation 3 Star white rum, Lunazul tequila, New Amsterdam gin and Polish Select vodka. All of these spirits are fairly mellow and easy going, meaning they play well with each other. No one flavor jumps out of the mix, and thats the way it should be for a classic Long Island. But it doesnt have to be that way.
Scale It Up Or Scale It Down
The great thing about a Long Island Iced Tea is how easy it is to scale up or down depending on your mood and crowd size. If you want to build a pitcher you can scale the whole recipe up, Trickett says. Instead of trying to shake the giant drink just, give it a good stir and let it sit so the ice can work its way into everything. If youd prefer to have a more aperitif-sized cocktail, scale everything down so that you are only using a half ounce of each spirit, like Holiday used to do. The bar opted for the smaller size because it was much more cost effective and also because it was the more responsible way to serve customers. Try Swapping Out The Cola For Actual Tea
The Coke in a traditional Long Island Iced Tea is mostly there to add color and just a little bit more sugar. Its not completely integral to the drink, so Holiday swaps it out for black tea syrup. We brew really, really strong black tea and turn it into simple syrup, Trickett says. It gives it color and also adds tannic tea notes. It still looks and tastes like a Long Island, just not as campy.

What Are Some Other Twists On A Long Island Iced Tea
- Long Beach Iced Tea replace the cola with cranberry juice for a more west coast feel.
- Hawaiian Iced Tea go even further west by replacing the cola with pineapple juice.
- Electric Iced Tea skip the triple sec in favor of blue curacao, and use lemon-lime soda in place of the cola for a bright blue cocktail.
- Purple Rain replace the triple sec with Chambord and the cola with lemon-lime soda for a very raspberry sipper.
- Texas Tea if five liquors arent enough for you, add 1/2 ounce of bourbon to the mix, too. Everythings bigger in Texas and apparently, also boozier.
