For many children with autism, mealtime is challenging because theres so much going on. The kitchen is busy, there are bright lights and varying sounds. All of these can act as stressors. That is why its important to make meals as routine and predictable as possible. Think about your unique child when planning a new routine, tending to their needs. For example, if your child struggles with bright lights, invest in light dimmers or eat dinner by candlelight .
Give your child choices that can be incorporated into your daily meal routine. For example, allow them to choose one of their favorite foods to include at every meal, even if its a condiment. Encourage your child to choose their designated seat at the table or if they want to, assign them a task that they complete every meal .

Feeding concerns are common for children with autism. In fact, children with autism are five times more likely than their peers to develop a feeding problem. However, it can be difficult to tell whether a childs eating habits are normal or require intervention.

Tips To Wean Children Off Processed Foods
1. Remove Packaging
First up I would recommend removing the branded packaging from their favourite foods. What we are trying to do with this is remove their association of that type of food with that brand and the colour or look of the packaging. If an autistic child always sees their favourite chicken nuggets in a particular box then they are never going to accept any others.
2. Recreate Homemade Versions
The key to making the switch from packaged to homemade foods is to make them as close as possible in look, feel and taste. I know this isnt always easy but simple things like making sure the nuggets and are very similar size and shape will help.
If your child loves skinny fries then making a batch of homemade chunky chips is probably not going to go down well. So practice getting your own version as close as possible to the brand that they love.
3. Added Nutrition
The benefit of making food from scratch is that you can make it much more nutritious with just a few simple swaps. For my chicken nugget recipe I use ground almonds for the coating which add protein, fibre, healthy monounsaturated fats, Vitamin E and antioxidants. I also keep the skins on the potatoes when making chips for an added boost of fibre, Vitamin C and B Vitamins.
4. Slow Introductions
If you child is pre-school age then try these new foods in the morning or at lunch. For older children who are at school maybe stick to the weekends initially.
6. Other Simple Swaps
Allow Hunger To Motivate Eating:
We generally recommend five opportunities to eat in 24 hours. This includes three regular meals and two snacks. There isnt a problem adding more opportunities, as long as they follow a regular pattern and some rules. What you want to avoid is eating whenever your child feels like it, especially if he/she has a constant grazing type pattern. If you have more meal/snack opportunities regularly expected in the routine, then your child wont have to wait too long for another opportunity.

Support Your Child With Many Approaches To Fix Picky Eating
You can also rephrase how you present food to your child. For example, instead of asking what your child wants to eat, tell them what options are available. You can offer several nutritional foods, so they still get to choose but all the options are healthy.
Get your child involved in preparing food, which is another way to help them get used to it. You can try masking the smell of certain foods by combining them with other foods. You may also try to offer your child something delicious to drink after theyve tried a food they rejected previously.
You may need to work with your pediatrician and behavior therapist to manage your childs physical health, in case there is an underlying cause for their rejection and discomfort. Behavior approaches to eating work best for most children with autism. Over time, youll notice less picky eating and more openness to trying new foods.

S To Fix Picky Eating With Your Autistic Child
Children with autism often develop very specific struggles with food and mealtimes. These behavioral, emotional, and physical problems go beyond simply disliking particular foods.
Children with autism may reject more food than they eat, preferring very specific textures or flavors, eating only foods that are familiar, or even failing to eat more than five different food items.
One research study found that 70% of children with autism displayed atypical eating behaviors, which was about 15 times the rate of neurotypical children in their age group. Children with autism were also more likely to have two or more atypical eating behaviors, while children with other developmental disorders tended not to have as many struggles with food.

Techniques for addressing various mealtime behavior issues are similar but they have to be broken down into manageable steps. Below is a practical guide for parents that will help both parents and their kids achieve their goals and reduce mealtime stress.
Prioritize: Too often parents try to tackle all mealtime behaviors at once. Thats a mistake and just leads to both kids and parents becoming overwhelmed and giving up. When Dr. Lee works with families she asks them to prioritize their goals. Is it increasing the number of foods their child will eat? The amount they eat? Or is it sitting at the table less disruptively? Parents need to identify their primary target.
Start small: No matter what the goal, its important to start with baby steps. For example, when trying a new food with a child, Dr. Lee will begin with a miniscule amount so small the child might not even be able to taste it. If the initial goal was simply trying the food, once the child tries the bite, Dr. Lee would provide significant praise and might count it as the childs no thank you bite. Meaning, Dr. Lee says, you take a bite and then you say no thank you calmly, and you dont have to have it again for the rest of that meal.
