Best Low Calorie Mix: Dr Swami & Bone Daddy’s Low Calorie Margarita Mix

Frozen Cherry Margaritas

Compared to some of the other mixes we tried, Dr. Swami’s admittedly doesn’t have the strongest flavor. It does, however, have markedly less sugar only 7 grams per 4 ounces, or about a fourth of what other mixes contain. And overall, it tastes a bit like a higher quality limeade. So if you’re OK with a bit of sugar but want a margarita with considerably less sugar, Dr. Swami’s is a pretty good mix to reach for.

Not looking to spend a ton on margarita mix, but still want decent flavor? Zing Zang or Mr. & Mrs. T. are the brands for you. To make a really incredible frozen margarita, ditch the margarita mix. Yeah, yeah, I knowthose mixes are great for convenience. But, they make pretty average margaritas! And, the mixes typically use low quality ingredients and cheap sugar. Until somebody shows me an awesome quality pre-mixed margarita, Im going to continue to say that, Life is just too short to drink sub-standard margaritas made from crappy margarita mix.

Until the day when a margarita-mix-super-fan proves me wrong and rocks my world, Im gonna say, always assemble your ingredients from scratch to completely control the quality and flavor of every aspect of your margarita.

    Frozen Margarita Ingredients:

Use high quality tequila, fresh lime juice , Cointreau or high quality Triple sec , and pure maple syrup or other natural sweetener. You can, of course, use regular cane sugar. But why?

Technically, about all recipes of frozen desserts require a good blender for icecan ruin the motor or even blades in a flash. And that includes even when making your favorite frozen margaritas with Jose Cuervo margarita mix at home. Otherwise, how will you achieve that smooth ice slushie without blending?

Oh, indeed, a mallet can also do the trick, I suppose. But my Vitamix 5200 is still a member of my kitchen. So, Ive never tried the mallet trick myself before, but I think you can crush the ice and add your tequila mix.

But even then, youll still need a nice spin to ensure all your ingredients mix well. Thus, even that cheap Oster or any other blender under $50 may come in handy if you need a uniformly layered drink.

The Best Frozen Margarita Recipe To Make This Summer

A few summers ago I discovered that I really enjoy tequila. Or rather tequila-based cocktails.

Ive never been a shots kind of a girl and I dont think my late 30s, with two small children, is the time to start.

I love the flavor of limes also, so I really love to make skinny margaritas.

I know there are so many ways to make margaritas out there so I decided to ask my for their favorite margarita recipes. They were varied, to say the least.

I decided I would try several of them and see which ones I like the best. It was hard work, you guys. But these are the kinds of things I do for you.

I made a traditional margarita with triple sec, lime juice, tequila and agave. It was just ok.

Several of the recipes that I had been given called for beer. Its more of a Chelada and didnt feel like a margarita.

And one called for Trader Joes margarita mix. I was disappointed.

While I still prefer my Skinny Margarita recipe for an everyday cocktail, turns out I found the best Frozen Limeade Margarita recipe that is perfect for extra hot summer days.

The Ingredients In This Blended Margarita

    • Oranges and limes are peeled and, instead of juicing, are added whole right to the blender. Blending the whole fruit came from a place of feeling like so much flavor is wasted when only the pulp is juiced. To be honest, a high-powered blender is a big help here.
    • Blanco or silver tequila is my go-to for a clean tequila flavor. Silver tequila is not aged and stays clear, hence the clean flavor. If youre not used to buying tequila, choose a mid-priced one. Theres no reason to blow the budget unless you enjoy sipping the liquor alone.
    • Orange liqueur brings out and bolsters the raw orange flavor. This is in place of triple sec as I find that orange liqueur has a more nuanced flavor along with a slight sweetness.
    • Agave syrup cuts through the sharpness of the citrus and lends some additional sweetness. If you dont have agave syrup, you can also use a simple syrup .
    • Ice is important! The correct amount of ice provides the margarita a consistency thats more drinkable than a slurpy, but still icy.

A frozen margarita doesnt have to be relegated to summer parties. Im a year-round margarita drinker and proud of it! A frozen margarita is just plain fun, but this one also hits home with the delicious flavors! Happy sipping!

    Fruit Sodas And Sports Drinks

    Best Frozen Margarita Recipes

Fruity sodas such as fruit punch, lime, pineapple, or mandarin orange Jarritos, or sports drinks such as blue or orange Gatorade, can substitute for triple sec. A margarita made with orange soda and beer is a sunrise beer margarita if it is made with carbonated fruit punch soda, it is a sunset margarita. The variant that uses grapefruit soda is called a Paloma.

    Tequila And Orange Liqueur

Youll want to begin by choosing a good Blanco tequila for their true agave flavor. Im using Reposado tequila, but feel free to use whichever you like.

As for orange liqueurs, I love Cointreau for its mix of sweet and bitter oranges. Other common brands to use are Curaçao and Grand Marnier. For a more detailed breakdown between all these liquors, take a peek at my classic margarita recipe.

Best Sweet Mix: Tres Agaves Organic Margarita Mix

Like your margaritas a bit more on the sugary side? Then look no further than Tres Agaves. This mix, while on the sweeter side, doesn’t have the artificial sugary taste found in their contenders. It also doesn’t contain that much actual sugar, comparatively only 16 grams per two ounces. The agave nectar simply does a great job of carrying those sweeter notes. If you’d like a bit less tart in your drink, then Tres Agaves will do well in your pantry.

Tips For Making The Perfect Margarita

How to make the perfect blended margarita

A perfect Margarita is all about finding the right balance of sweet and sour. For some people, that means adding a little extra lime juice or orange juice, and others might prefer to add a touch of sweetness with agave nectar or simple syrup. Of course, don’t forget the saltrimming your glass with salt is essential for that classic margarita flavor. So, whatever your preference is, be sure to experiment until you find thebest margarita mixand recipe that you prefer.

If you are just starting out, here are a few tips to help you get it just right:

    • Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor.
    • If your margarita is too tart, add a little bit of agave nectar or simple syrup.
    • If you don’t have a margarita mix, you can use a common sweet and sour mix instead.
    • If your margarita is too sweet, add a little bit more lime juice.
    • Be sure to taste as you go along so you can adjust the flavor to your liking.
    • A little bit of salt goes a long way in bringing out the flavors of a margarita.

    Use Fresh Or Frozen Mangoes

You can use either pre-frozen chunks of mangoes from the store, or peel, cut, and freeze your own fresh mangoes.

To freeze your own, peel away the skin and cut the flesh away from the pit. Chop up the flesh into 1/2-inch chunks and spread them evenly over a baking sheet. Freeze for at least 4 hours, or overnight if time allows. Then remove the chunks and use right away or store them in a freezer-safe container up to 9 months.

If youre using fresh mangoes, make sure they are super ripe. The best time to purchase in-season mangoes is in early summer. That way theyll be super-sweet and taste of mango, instead of the bland taste of an under-ripe one. However, its possible to find mangoes all year round at your local grocery store, and, even if out of season, it doesnt always mean theyll be flavorless.

How Do You Make Frozen Margaritas:

This is the best way Ive found to make the most delicious Frozen Lime Margarita Recipe.

  • Make them strong. Since all that crushed ice will dilute the alcohol, lime juice, and simple syrup, make sure that your portions are on the stronger side.
  • Use chilled ingredients, if possible. If you use warm/room temp ingredients, your ice will melt faster, and youll likely need to add more ice to get a thick, slushy consistency. The more ice you add, the more you will dilute the flavor. So, plan a bit and chill your alcohol, lime juice, and simple syrup in advance.
  • Adjust to suit your taste preferences. I cant stress this one enough! When making your cocktail, you can control precisely how you want it to taste. Add more simple syrup for a sweeter cocktail, more lime juice for a more tart cocktail, and of course, increase or decrease the alcohol based on how strong you like your drinks. Use this recipe as a guide and go from there.
  • Adjust the recipe quantity to serve more or less. This recipe makes four margaritas, but you can easily double or even triple it to serve a crowd.
  • These are best served immediately after blending. Wait until you are ready, then throw everything in the blender and mix them up. Theyll be ready in seconds!

    • Make it spicy! Blend in half of a jalapeno pepper, chopped and deseeded, with the rest of the ingredients. Garnish with spicy salt on the rim.
    • On the rocks! If youd like a non-blended version of this, substitute 3 ounces of mango puree or juice for the frozen mango. Shake that along with 2 ounces Blanco tequila, 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice from about 1 lime, 1/2 ounce orange liqueur, 1/2 ounce orange juice, and 1/2 ounce simple syrup . If you use a mango nectar, which is usually sweetened, you may not need any simple syrup, so taste first and decide from there. To serve, strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass.
    • Get fancy with garnishes! Kosher salt is a standard ingredient for rimming your glass, but here you can swap that out with sugar crystals, or use Tajín chili pepper seasoning either on its own or mixed in with salt. Lime wheels, orange slices, and mango chunks all also work for garnishes.
