What If The Gravy Doesnt Thicken

Quick and easy sausage gravy with Jimmy Dean

We had a reader mention that her gravy never got thick. I believe this is most likely due to the type of almond flour youre using. The finer the flour, the better. If youre using almond meal, it might not thicken as much.

You also need to use full-fat cream in this recipe, which will thicken on its own without any almond flour. Adding the almond flour should just give it a little more body and texture.

If youre worried about thickening, pour the water in slowly, bit by bit, so you can decide how much to add. If its not needed, dont add it.

How To Make Homemade Sausage Gravy

  • Brown sausage. I use the Jimmy Dean brand.
  • Make a roux: add butter to the pan. Once melted stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly stir in the half and half and cook until thickened.
  • Season with thyme and freshly ground pepper.
  • This gravy recipe will make enough to serve over 8 biscuits, which is equivalent to 1 batch of my homemade buttermilk biscuits.

How Do I Make Southern Style Sausage Gravy

You may be surprised that you are only ten minutes away from enjoying piping hot sausage gravy! All you need to make this dish is hot breakfast sausage, flour, milk, and salt and pepper to taste! To begin, simply break up your sausage in a skillet and cook until the sausage crumbles are brown and crispy. The grease leftover in the pan is a much more flavorful substitute for butter, and will pack a peppery punch in the gravy! set your sausage aside and whisk in your flour to the grease mixture. Next, whisk in the milk until the gravy is completely smooth. Once everything is combined, let the gravy simmer over medium heat for about five minutes, or until it reaches your desired consistency. Lastly, add salt and pepper to taste and enjoy!

Coming from someone who loves Biscuits & Gravy for breakfast, this keto sausage gravy was an absolutely must for me. Making a breakfast like this, with creamy country sausage gravy is comforting and makes me satisfied with my diet.

Youll love how easy this is to make. Its pretty similar to the method I used to make sausage gravy with wheat flour. Ive just substituted it with almond flour. The result is nearly the same. Its smooth and creamy, and packed with sausage flavor.

You can use whatever sausage you like for this recipe. I gravitate to Jimmy Dean sausage. I like the sage sausage, but hot and Italian are also good. Do take a look at the carbs in the sausage that you buy. Jimmy Dean has 1 grams of carbs per ounce.

How To Make Keto Sausage Gravy

Start by browning the ground sausage and breaking it up into small pieces. When the meat is cooked through, add the butter and almond flour to the pan and whisk it all together.

Ive seen many variations of gravy recipes. Others include things like cream cheese or mascarpone cheese, almond milk, chicken broth, and xanthan gum. This recipe just uses butter, almond flour and heavy cream + water. I dont find that you need xanthan gum to make the gravy creamy.

Add the heavy cream and water and whisk it all together. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. As the gravy bubbles, it will get thicker. The longer you cook it, the thicker it gets, so its best to serve it as soon its ready.

If you cant serve it right away, you may need to add additional water to it to thin it back down before serving.

How Do You Make Sausage Gravy

    • The first step to making this gravy is to cook one pound of pork breakfast sausage. You can use mild, hot, maple, or any type of pork sausage that you prefer.
    • Once the sausage is browned through with no pink remaining you will add two tablespoons of butter directly to the cooked sausage and allow it to melt.
    • Next, sprinkle your flour over the sausage. You will stir the flour into the sausage for 1-2 minutes until that “raw flour” smell is gone. The flour and fat mixture is what will allow your gravy to thicken.
    • Pour in the milk slowly while whisking. Your gravy will continue to thicken and bubble as your pour in the milk.
    • Once the milk has all been added to the skillet, you will add your seasonings. Allow the gravy to simmer for 2-3 minutes until thickened, then serve right away.
    • This gravy can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days for best results.

Whisk 2 cups whole milk into the skillet, dissolving all the browned bits off the bottom of the skillet as you whisk.

Continue to cook and stir until the milk comes up to a gentle simmer, at which point it will thicken into a nice gravy .

Season the gravy with tsp crushed red pepper, tsp freshly cracked black pepper, tsp garlic powder, and tsp salt.

    How To Make Sausage Gravy

This recipe is really very simple. Follow these steps to make the perfect sausage gravy for biscuits.

  • Brown the Sausage: In a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat, brown the sausage, breaking it up as you cook it until its no longer pink and evenly brown. Dont drain the fat from the pan, well be using it.
  • Make the Gravy: Add butter to the pan and allow it to melt, then sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage. Stir, cooking the flour for 2 minutes. Then slowly add the milk, stirring constantly as you pour to avoid clumps.
  • Thicken Gravy: Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until the sausage gravy is thickened.
  • Season: Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Taste before adding salt, some sausages are saltier than others and may not need additional salt added.
  • Serve: Serve sausage gravy immediately after cooking, over biscuits.
  • Can Sausage Gravy Be Made From Other Meats

As mentioned above, it could be a fun adventure if you try different kinds of sausage, particularly if its made from a variety of meat options. Besides pork, you can purchase sausage made from beef, veal, turkey, and chicken. Those of you who try to limit meat intake should research sausage eaten by your vegan friends, youll probably find some sausage options made with tofu . Sure, each meat or meatless variation will have a different flavor and texture, but when its sausage youll find they all tend to be tasty.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 package Jimmy Dean Maple Sausage
    • 4 cups Milk
    • Seasoning: Garlic, Seasoned Salt, Seasoned Pepper
    • Biscuits

Steps to make Maple Sausage Gravy

  • Cook up the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. As it cooks, break it up as much as possible, it makes it easier to use in the gravy later.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove all the sausage in the pan but leave the grease. If there are tiny meat crumbs left behind, that’s ok, you just don’t want a big bulk of meat at first.
  • Pour milk into the same skillet and gently stir to mix in whatever was left in the pan. Stir in your bullion, a little season pepper and garlic/salt to taste. Let simmer for about 5-10 minutes.
  • While the milk is simmering, use a fork to break up the meat a little more. We don’t like huge chunks of meat in our gravy so I sometimes put the meat in the food processor. But, you can get small pieces pretty well with a fork.
  • Our favorite part! Put a biscuit on a plate, cover in sausage, eat.
